Otters’ Dylan Strome named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Strome of the Erie Otters is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the final playoff week ending May 14 scoring twice with five assists for seven points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Strome captained the Otters to their first Robertson Cup title since 2002 defeating the Mississauga Steelheads in five games to clinch the Rogers OHL Championship Series delivering a trio of multi-point performances down the stretch.  In Friday’s Game 5 victory on home ice, Strome’s playmaking ability helped the Otters erase a 2-0 deficit chipping in three assists in the 4-3 triumph including a pass to Anthony Cirelli in overtime for the series-winning goal at 2:41 of the extra frame.  Strome also scored a goal and an assist in Monday’s Game 3 despite a 4-3 loss, then contributed another goal and assist in Game 4 on Wednesday helping the Otters claim a 5-2 win.

As OHL champions the Otters advance to the 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup in Windsor where they join the host Spitfires, QMJHL champion Saint John Sea Dogs, and WHL champion Seattle Thunderbirds in the 99th edition of the Canadian Hockey League’s prestigious national championship.  The Otters open competition against the Thunderbirds on Saturday.

A 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., Strome played four full seasons in Erie after being chosen by the Otters second overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection.  His 2016-17 campaign included 75 points in just 35 games played followed by a post-season where he scored 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points in 22 playoff contests.  The third overall pick of the Coyotes in the 2015 NHL Draft is the leading scorer in Otters franchise history producing 354 points in 219 regular season games and 86 points over 69 playoff games that included a stretch of four straight appearances in the Western Conference Final.

Also considered for the award this week was Carolina Hurricanes prospect Warren Foegele who earned the Wayne Gretzky ‘99’ Award as OHL Playoff MVP scoring three goals and three assists for six points in the final three games of the series, and Tampa Bay Lightning prospects Taylor Raddysh (3g, 2a) and Anthony Cirelli (2g, 3a) who each recorded five points in three games highlighted by heroic Game 5 performances that included a hat-trick for Raddysh and Cirelli’s overtime winner.  In goal, Troy Timpano made 72 saves in three games for the Otters posting a 2-1 record with a goals-against-average of 2.99 and save percentage of .889.

Otters’ Warren Foegele named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Carolina Hurricanes prospect Warren Foegele of the Erie Otters is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending May 7 after scoring two goals in two games with a plus-minus rating of plus-1.

Foegele scored a timely goal in each of the first two games of the Rogers OHL Championship Series helping the Western Conference champion Otters take a 2-0 lead against the Eastern Conference champion Mississauga Steelheads.  In Thursday’s Game 1, Foegele earned first star honours by scoring the game’s first goal early in the second period propelling the club to a 2-1 victory.  He then earned second star honours in Sunday’s Game 2 by breaking a 1-1 tie late in the third period with a breakaway goal as the Otters prevailed by a 3-2 score.  The Rogers OHL Championship Series for the J. Ross Robertson Cup continues Monday night with Game 3 and Wednesday night with Game 4 both in Mississauga.

A 21-year-old from Markham, Ont., Foegele is playing in his second OHL season and first with the Otters after being acquired midseason from the Kingston Frontenacs.  The third round pick of the Hurricanes in the 2014 NHL Draft finished the 2016-17 campaign with 63 points in 61 games including 16 goals and 16 assists in 33 games with the Otters.  So far this post-season he ranks ninth in league scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 19 games.  Foegele signed his entry-level contract with the Canes in late March.

Also considered for the award was last week’s recipient Anthony Cirelli, a Tampa Bay Lightning prospect with the Otters who contributed three assists in two games, and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat who picked up two goals in Sunday’s Game 2 win.  In goal, the Steelheads’ Matthew Mancina has been outstanding despite two losses making 57 saves for a goals-against-average of 2.04 and save percentage of .934.

Otters’ Anthony Cirelli named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Anthony Cirelli of the Erie Otters is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 30 after recording nine points in four games scoring four goals and five assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Cirelli earns the award for a second time this post-season after producing three straight multi-point performances in three wins for the Otters who captured the Wayne Gretzky Trophy with a 4-2 series win against the Owen Sound Attack in the Western Conference Championship Series.  Cirelli chipped in with one assist despite a 6-3 loss in last Monday’s Game 3, then earned first star honours in Wednesday’s Game 4 with a goal and an assist as the Otters tied the series 2-2 with a 4-3 triumph in Owen Sound.  His strong play continued with two assists in Friday’s Game 5 leading to a 4-2 victory, then peaked in Sunday’s Game 6 series finale delivering a hat-trick plus an assist as first star of the 7-2 win.  This marks the third Wayne Gretzky Trophy for the Otters following Western Conference titles in 2015 and 2002.  They now advance to the Rogers OHL Championship Series against the Mississauga Steelheads for the J. Ross Robertson Cup beginning Thursday in Erie.

A 19-year-old from Woodbridge, ON, Cirelli is playing in his third OHL season and first with the Otters after being acquired from the Oshawa Generals in January.  In 17 playoff games he ranks fifth in scoring with 23 points including 13 goals and 10 assists.  In 25 games with Erie he scored 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points bringing his 2016-17 totals to a career-high 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points in 51 games.  The third round pick of the Lightning in the 2015 NHL Draft will be playing in his second OHL Championship Series after winning the 2015 title along with a Mastercard Memorial Cup with the Generals.

Also considered for the award this week was Otters captain and Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Strome with two goals and three assists for five points in four games, along with Steelheads captain and New Jersey Devils prospect Michael McLeod who scored twice with two assists for four points in two games.  In goal, Matthew Mancina backstopped the Steelheads to an Eastern Conference title capturing the Bobby Orr Trophy with a 4-0 series win over the Peterborough Petes.  In his two games last week he made 52 saves in two victories including one by shutout for an overall goals-against-average of 0.40 and save percentage of .981.

Steelheads’ Matthew Mancina named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that goaltender Matthew Mancina of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 23 after posting a 2-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .944.

Mancina turned aside 51 shots last week for the Steelheads who opened the Eastern Conference Championship Series with a pair of road victories to take a 2-0 series lead against the Peterborough Petes.  In Game 1 on Thursday he made 27 saves in the 5-3 win, then recorded his first career playoff shutout stopping all 24 shots he faced in Game 2 on Saturday earning second star honours in the 3-0 triumph.  The victory improved the Steelheads’ perfect playoff road record to 8-0 and marked a sixth straight playoff win for the club and Mancina.

A 20-year-old from Tecumseh, Ont., Mancina is playing in his fourth OHL season but first with the Steelheads after being acquired from the Petes prior to the 2016-17 campaign.  So far this post-season he carries a 6-1 record with a goals-against-average of 2.44 and save percentage of .908.  Originally a third round choice of the Guelph Storm in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection, Mancina’s OHL tenure has included 157 regular season games including 76 victories between his three clubs.  The Steelheads have claimed Player of the Week honours in five of the last 11 weeks with other recipients including Spencer Watson, Jacob Ingham, and two-time winner Michael McLeod.

Petes’ Dylan Wells named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Edmonton Oilers prospect Dylan Wells of the Peterborough Petes is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 16 after posting a 2-0 record with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .957.

Wells made 66 saves in two road games last week helping the Petes extend their playoff winning-streak to eight by completing a four-game series victory over the Kingston Frontenacs to advance to the Eastern Conference Championship Series.  In Game 3 last Tuesday in Kingston, Wells made 33 saves and earned first star honours in a 3-1 victory.  He followed that effort with another 33-save performance in Thursday’s Game 4 and became part of OHL history in the process scoring a goal into the empty-net to clinch the 6-2 victory.  Wells became the first goaltender in Petes history to score a goal, and ninth OHL goaltender all-time to accomplish the feat.  The Petes will now compete for their first Bobby Orr Trophy since 2006 up against the Mississauga Steelheads in the East Final best-of-seven series which begins Thursday night in Peterborough.

A 19-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., Wells is playing in his third OHL season with the Petes after being chosen by the club in the second round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.  This season he carried a 33-15-2-2 record for the East Division champs with a goals-against-average of 3.07 and save percentage of .916.  During his eight-game winning-streak to open the post-season both his GAA and SV% have improved to marks of 1.94 and .944 respectively.  The fifth round pick of the Oilers in the 2016 NHL Draft claims the OHL’s weekly honour for the second time this season.

Also considered for the award this week was another goaltender, Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael McNiven of the Owen Sound Attack, who backstopped his club to a berth in the Western Conference Championship Series with three wins last week including a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 1.67 and save percentage of .944 against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.  Offensively, Los Angeles Kings prospect Spencer Watson of the Mississauga Steelheads scored five goals and one assist for six points in three games against the Oshawa Generals, and Carolina Hurricanes prospect Janne Kuokkanen of the London Knights scored five goals in four games against the Erie Otters.

Greyhounds’ Joseph Raaymakers named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that goaltender Joseph Raaymakers of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 9 after posting a 2-1 record with a goals-against-average of 1.67 and save percentage of .951.

Raaymakers stopped 98 shots in three games for the West Division champion Greyhounds who opened their Western Conference Semi-Final series last week against the Owen Sound Attack with a pair of wins on home ice.  In Game 1 last Wednesday he made 27 saves as second star of a 4-1 victory, then earned first star honours in Game 2 on Friday with 34 saves in another 4-1 decision.  On Sunday night in Owen Sound the Attack clawed back for their first win of the series, but Raaymakers stood tall earning third star recognition with 37 saves in Game 3’s 4-1 outcome.  The series continues with Game 4 on Tuesday followed by Game 5 on Friday.

A 19-year-old from Chatham, ON, Raaymakers is playing in his third season with the Greyhounds who chose him in the second round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.  He currently leads all netminders with a post-season goals-against-average of 1.43 and save percentage of .954 after producing marks of 3.38 and .889 in 41 regular season appearances.  He previously earned Player of the Week honours back in October and was the first of eight different goaltenders to earn the distinction in 2016-17.

Also considered for the award this week was 2017 NHL Draft prospect Jason Robertson of the Kingston Frontenacs who led the league with six points in three games including a goal and five assists.  Additional consideration came from between-the-pipes as Edmonton Oilers prospect Dylan Wells of the Peterborough Petes made 55 saves in two second round victories posting a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .948, while Calgary Flames prospect Tyler Parsons carried a 2-1 record including a shutout victory with 103 saves for a goals-against-average of 2.10 and save percentage of .945.

Steelheads’ Michael McLeod named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that New Jersey Devils prospect Michael McLeod of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 2 recording nine points in four games including five goals and four assists along with a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

McLeod helped the Steelheads advance to the second round of the Eastern Conference OHL Playoffs with a six game series win over the Ottawa 67’s.  The series wrapped up on Sunday with McLeod delivering a team playoff record five-point performance scoring twice including the game-winner plus three assists as first star of the 5-1 road win.  The captain also had points in last week’s three other games including Game 3 on Tuesday with a goal in the 2-1 win, Game 4 on Thursday scoring the game-winner plus an assist in the 6-4 victory, and in Game 5 on Friday with a goal despite the 5-3 loss.  Central Division champion Mississauga will play in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals for the first time since their Steelheads rebrand in 2012-13 facing off against the third place Oshawa Generals.

A 19-year-old from Mississauga, ON, McLeod is playing in his third season with the hometown Steelheads after being chosen fifth overall by the club in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.  His first round playoff series included 11 points following a 2016-17 regular season campaign of 73 points in 57 games.  The first round pick of the Devils in the 2016 NHL Draft also earned Player of the Week honours in February and along with teammates Spencer Watson and Jacob Ingham have claimed the award for the Trout in four of the last eight weeks.

Also considered for the award this week was Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Strome who scored four goals and three assists for seven points in two games for the Erie Otters who eliminated the Sarnia Sting in four straight first round games.  Petrus Palmu of the Owen Sound Attack also scored four goals and three assists for a total of seven points in three games last week helping his club move past the Kitchener Rangers in their five game series.  In goal, Joseph Raaymakers of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds stopped 82 shots in the final three games of their first round matchup against the Flint Firebirds posting a goals-against-average of 1.33 and save percentage of .953 earning three straight wins to close the series in five games.

Otters’ Anthony Cirelli named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Anthony Cirelli of the Erie Otters is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the first week of post-season action ending March 26 recording three goals and two assists for five points in two games with a plus-minus rating of plus-2.

Cirelli’s two multi-point performances helped the top ranked Otters open the 2017 OHL Western Conference Quarter-Finals with a pair of victories over the Sarnia Sting.  In Game 1 on Thursday in Erie he scored a goal and an assist as part of a 6-3 triumph, then scored twice in Game 2 on Saturday night in Sarnia including the game-winner along with an assist receiving second star honours in the 9-3 win.  Cirelli’s efforts were part of the overall Otters high powered offense that received four or more points from five other players in the opening two games along with Alex DeBrincat, Taylor Raddysh, Warren Foegele, Kyle Maksimovich, and Dylan Strome.  The series continues with Game 3 tonight in Sarnia followed by Game 4 in Erie on Wednesday.

A 19-year-old from Woodbridge, ON, Cirelli is playing in his third OHL season and first with the Otters after being acquired from the Oshawa Generals in January.  In 25 games with Erie he scored 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points bringing his 2016-17 totals to a career-high 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points in 51 games.  The third round pick of the Lightning in the 2015 NHL Draft represented Canada at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and has 26 games of previous playoff experience with the Generals that included an OHL Championship along with a 2015 Mastercard Memorial Cup title.

Also considered for the award this week was last week’s recipient Petrus Palmu of the Owen Sound Attack, along with Lightning prospect Boris Katchouk of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and 2017 NHL Draft prospect Jack Studnicka of the Generals who each tallied two goals and two assists for four points in their opening two first round playoff games.  In goal, Dawson Carty of the Hamilton Bulldogs made 54 saves in a pair of road wins over the Kingston Frontenacs including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .931.

Steelheads’ Jacob Ingham named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that rookie goaltender Jacob Ingham of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 19 after posting a 3-0-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .958.

Ingham stopped 91 shots last week winning all three of his games for the Central Division champion Steelheads who improve their record to 34-20-6-7 with wins in nine of their last 10.  His week included a pair of first star performances against the Niagara IceDogs who were aggressively pursuing a post-season berth.  Ingham shut the door with a 43-save effort on Thursday as first star of a 4-1 road win and ending with 33 saves on Sunday claiming first star honours in the 6-1 win at home against the Dogs.  Ingham also played the final 40 minutes of Friday’s contest against the Barrie Colts making 15 saves to preserve the 4-2 win.  The Steelheads have secured second place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference however Tuesday’s final home game against the Sudbury Wolves will determine their first round playoff opponent which could be Sudbury or the Ottawa 67’s.

A 16-year-old from Barrie, Ont., Ingham was chosen by the Steelheads in the second round of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.  Appearing in 30 games this season the January recipient of the Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month award carries a 17-5-3-3 record including two shutouts with a goals-against-average of 2.68 and save percentage of .907.  This season he’s the first rookie to earn the league’s weekly honour, the eighth goaltender to be recognized, and the third Steelhead following teammates Michael McLeod and Spencer Watson who both won in the span of three weeks during February.

Also considered for the award this week was Ethan Szypula who recorded 11 points including a goal and 10 assists in four games for the Owen Sound Attack who wrapped up their best regular season finish in franchise history with 49 wins and 102 points.  In addition, 2017 NHL Draft prospect Jason Robertson of the Kingston Frontenacs scored three goals and six assists for nine points in three games helping his club secure fourth place and first round home ice advantage against the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Attack’s Petrus Palmu named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Petrus Palmu of the Owen Sound Attack is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 12 after leading the league with eight points in three games scoring four goals and four assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Palmu recorded a pair of multi-point performances for the Attack who picked up a trio of victories last week moving up to third place in the Western Conference standings with a 45-15-2-2 record.  He began the week by matching a season-high with four points on Thursday including a goal and three assists as second star of a 6-4 road win over the Niagara IceDogs.  On Saturday night Palmu scored in a 4-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit, then finished the week with two goals and an assist on Sunday afternoon in Sarnia as first star of a 9-3 win over the Sting.  Palmu now has points in eight straight games to match the Attack’s current point-streak that includes seven wins and an overtime loss in their last eight contests.

A 19-year-old from Joensuu, Finland, Palmu is playing in his third season with the Attack who selected him in the first round of the 2014 CHL Import Draft.  He’s currently tied for fifth in league scoring with teammate Nick Suzuki recording 89 points in 58 games powered by 37 goals and 52 assists which are all career-highs.  Palmu represented Finland at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and is the third member of the Attack to claim the league’s weekly honour following goaltender Michael McNiven and defenceman Santino Centorame who won back-to-back in January.
