OHL CUP POWERED BY UNDER ARMOUR U16 AAA TOP 10 RANKINGS – WEEK 8

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Week 8 edition of the weekly U16 AAA rankings for the 2022 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament presented by Under Armour and hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

The 2022 OHL Cup powered by Under Armour and hosted by the GTHL is scheduled for March 30 to April 4, 2022 and features 20 teams consisting of talent eligible for the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. All games will be played at the Scotiabank Pond in Toronto until the Championship Final moves to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Monday, April 4. Wild card play-in games to determine the final entries into the showcase will be held at Scotiabank Pond on Tuesday, March 29.

The weekly rankings are determined by a panel of OHL Central Scouting staff and represent the top teams that are competing to play in the annual year-end championship tournament.

There’s lots of movement on the Week 8 edition of the OHL Cup presented by Under Armour Top 10 Rankings, with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens back in the driver’s seat after a perfect week of hockey. JRC sits in a three-way tie for first place in the GTHL standings with the second-ranked Mississauga Senators and newly appointed third-ranked Toronto Marlboros. The Brantford 99ers are up into sixth this week, finishing their season with 10 consecutive wins to top the ALLIANCE U16 standings as they now prepare for a first round playoff series against the Lambton Jr. Sting. The Markham Waxers are also up one spot, sitting ninth after defeating the first place Quinte Red Devils by a score of 2-0 on Sunday.

INAUGURAL U14 OHL CUP PRESENTED BY DAIRY FARMERS OF ONTARIO SET FORAPRIL 14-16

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in partnership with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA), is proud to announce the inaugural under-14 (U14) OHL Cup presented by Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO).

This event will comprise of 12 U14 tier one, also referred to as AAA teams, from across the province and will include the top teams (as indicated below) from Ontario Member Partners:

  • OMHA – Champion, Finalist, 3rd Place Team (3)
  • GTHL – Champion, Finalist, 3rd Place Team (3)
  • Alliance – Champion, Finalist (2)
  • HEO – Champion, Finalist (2)
  • NOHA – Champion, Finalist (2)

The U14 OHL Cup will take place at Joshua’s Creek Arena in Oakville on April 14-16, 2022. The event will provide the players and parents with an introduction to the OHL, along with showing them an exciting experience to end their season.

The Markham Majors are on the rise in the Week 7 edition of the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour Top 10 Rankings. Markham defeated the Toronto Red Wings and Thunder Bay Kings this past week, improving to 12-4-4 for fourth place in the GTHL standings. The Majors leapfrogged the North York Rangers both in the standings and in the OHL Cup Top 10, pushing North York down to sixth on this week’s list. The Brantford 99ers are up two spots to number seven, defeating the London Jr. Knights 4-2 on Monday night in London. Brantford climbs to within two points of the first place Jr. Knights in the ALLIANCE standings, boasting a 20-5-1 record with nine straight wins.

The OMHA’s Markham Waxers are into the OHL Cup Top 10 for the first time this season, coming in at 10th on the Week 6 edition. Finishing second in the OMHA-ETA regular season standings with a 20-4-3 record and .796 winning percentage, the Waxers ended their schedule on a five-game winning streak and now prepare for the postseason that begins Thursday against Whitby. The GTHL’s Mississauga Senators hold steady at number one for a third straight week as they prepare for a Tuesday night test against the fifth-ranked North York Rangers. The Toronto Jr. Canadiens remain the second-ranked team on the list this week after they defeated the fourth-ranked Toronto Marlboros 3-2 on Friday.

The fifth edition of the weekly OHL Cup Top 10 Rankings sees the North York Rangers on the rise to fifth on the list following a decisive win over the Mississauga Rebels and a 4-2 defeat of the honourable mention Vaughan Kings who fall from ninth in last weeks ranking. The Brantford 99ers are up one spot to number nine on the list, defeating the Lambton Jr. Sting 9-1 on Saturday followed by a 3-2 victory over the Huron-Perth Lakers on Sunday. The Waterloo Wolves make their first appearance on this season’s rankings, bumping Windsor from the Top 10 in a 4-3 decision on Saturday before blanking the Sun County Panthers 7-0 on Sunday. Long-time Wolves head coach Shawn Dietrich earned his 500th career U16 AAA coaching win over the weekend, celebrating the milestone feat on his birthday.

The rankings return for the first time since December 14 after Covid-19 measures were instituted across the province of Ontario, halting play across minor hockey associations. With play back underway this past week and the 2022 OHL Cup less than two months away, the countdown continues.

The 2022 OHL Cup powered by Under Armour is scheduled for March 30 to April 4 and features 20 teams consisting of talent eligible for the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. All games will be played at the Scotiabank Pond in Toronto until the Championship Final moves to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Monday, April 4.

Note: Wild Card Play-In matchups are now scheduled to take place at the Scotiabank Pond on Tuesday, March 29 to determine the final entries to the 2022 OHL Cup.

The Senators lead the GTHL standings with an 11-2-0 record while second-ranked JRC sits at 9-3-1. The London Jr. Knights are up one spot to number seven on the list, sitting atop the ALLIANCE standings with a 16-4-1 record. The second-place Windsor Jr. Spitfires have won their last six games and enter the rankings for the first time this season at number nine while the Brantford 99ers have won eight of their last 10, rounding out the top 10.

The Quinte Red Devils and Toronto Marlboros climb the charts for a second straight week. Quinte defeated the Clarington Toros 4-2 on Saturday, extending their winning streak to five games while improving to 18-0-3 atop the OMHA ETA standings. After a 2-2 tie against sixth-ranked North York on Saturday, the Marlboros took over first place in the GTHL standings on Monday, improving to 9-1-1 with a 3-1 win over the second-ranked Mississauga Senators.

The annual showcase hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League makes its return starting Wednesday, March 30, 2022.

Back for the first time since 2019, the 2022 OHL Cup powered by Under Armour features 20 teams consisting of talent eligible for the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. All games will be played at the Scotiabank Pond in Toronto until the Championship Final moves to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Monday, April 4.

Typically starting with a wild card play-in day on the Tuesday of opening week, this year’s wild card qualifying games will be played in advance of the 20 showcase-clinching teams arriving at Scotiabank Pond on Wednesday, March 30.

History:
The most recent edition of the OHL Cup in 2019 saw the Don Mills Flyers overcome a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Toronto Red Wings 6-5, with Shane Wright (Kingston Frontenacs) setting up Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds) for the overtime winning goal. The Flyers added both OHL Cup and GTHL Championships to their incredible season that saw them lose just once. An exceptional status player who was selected by the Kingston Frontenacs with the first overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Wright was named Tournament MVP with 18 points over seven contests, one shy of Connor McDavid’s 2012 event record.

Midget Players of the Year

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the seven recipients of Minor Midget Player of the Year Awards for players representing the four Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners including the ALLIANCE, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and both the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s ETA and SCTA regions, along with Hockey Eastern Ontario, and Hockey Northwestern Ontario.

This year’s winners include Bryce McConnell-Barker of the London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE), Pano Fimis of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL), Cedrick Guindon of the Rockland Nationals (HEO), Brodie McLeod of the Thunder Bay Kings (HNO), Connor Toms of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds (NOHA), Donovan McCoy of the Quinte Red Devils (OMHA ETA) and Sam Alfano of the Southern Tier Admirals (OMHA SCTA).

“Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s awards and thank you to the families, coaches, and teammates for their tremendous support of these remarkable players over the course of the season and throughout their minor hockey careers,” said Kyle Pereira, the OHL’s Director of Player Recruitment.

“The OHL continues to recognize all the hard work, dedication, and extraordinary accomplishments from across Ontario. We thank all players for another great season and wish them the very best of luck in their hockey and academic careers.”

The recipients consist of four forwards and three defencemen. Looking up front, Alfano capped off the regular season second in SCTA scoring with 36 goals and 63 points in 32 appearances with the Admirals, while Guindon totaled 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points over 41 games with the Nationals. McConnell-Barker tallied 29 goals and 48 points over 33 games with the Jr. Knights for fifth in ALLIANCE scoring and Fimis finished in a tie for first atop the GTHL scoring race with 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 32 games with the league champion Jr. Canadiens.

On defence, McCoy recorded six goals and 29 assists for 35 points in as many games for the OMHA champion Red Devils while McLeod posted seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points in 39 games with the Kings. Toms registered eight goals and 15 assists, good for 23 points over 36 appearances with the Jr. Greyhounds.

The awards are presented annually to honour the minor midget players who best exemplify outstanding ability and the qualities of sportsmanship and leadership as voted by the minor hockey coaches, managers and organizations of each respective league.
