AUSTIN AND OTHMANN NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, November 28, 2021.

Firebirds’ Brennan Othmann Named OHL Player of the Week

New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds is the OHL Player of the Week with seven points including a goal and six assists across three games.

Othmann helped the Firebirds win two of three last week, earning first star recognition twice. He chipped in with an assist in Wednesday’s 5-3 win over the visiting rival Saginaw Spirit before a three-assist effort on Friday as Flint skated to a 6-3 win in Sarnia. Othmann had a goal and two assists along with nine shots on goal on Saturday as the Firebirds dropped a 4-3 decision on the back-end of a home-and-home against the Sting.

An 18-year-old native of Pickering, Ont., Othmann leads the Firebirds with 27 points (14-13–27) in 17 games this season. His 92 shots on goal are the third-most in the OHL as he produces at a 1.59 point-per-game clip, the fifth-highest pace in the League. A member of Canada’s gold medal-winning National Under-18 Team this past May in Frisco, Texas, Othmann was selected by the New York Rangers with the 16th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft. The former OHL Cup champion was Flint’s first round (2nd overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and was named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team in 2019-20 with 33 points (17-16–33) in 55 games.

Also considered for the award this week, Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison recorded seven points (1-6–7) as his club picked up five of a possible six points. Nashville Predators prospect Luke Evangelista of the London Knights led the League with five goals along with an assist over three games, and Buffalo Sabres prospect Josh Bloom of the Saginaw Spirit had six points (3-3–6), headlined by two shorthanded goals and a game winner.

Petes’ Tye Austin Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Tye Austin of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after winning a pair of games while posting a 2.50 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.

Austin recently returned from injury and turned aside 60 of the 65 shots that came his way last week. He made 19 saves in Thursday’s 5-3 win over the visiting North Bay Battalion, snapping the Troops’ four-game winning streak in Mason McTavish’s return to the Petes lineup. Austin provided a season-high 41 saves in Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Ottawa 67’s, earning first star recognition as the Petes were outshot 43-29, earning their third straight win.

A 19-year-old from Pembroke, Ont., Austin missed a month of action with a shoulder injury, returning to the Petes’ lineup on November 18th. The 6-foot-6, 200Ib. netminder is 3-2-0-0 with a 3.83 goals-against average and .888 save percentage in six games this season. Selected by the Petes in the third round (43rd overall) of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Austin owns a career mark of 14-16-0-1 with a 4.16 goals-against average and .877 save percentage through 42 career regular season games in maroon and white.

Also considered for this week’s award, last week’s recipient Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting was strong once again, going 1-1-0-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in two games. London Knights goaltender Brett Brochu was kept busy, making 113 saves over three outings. He posted a 2.95 goals-against average and .926 save percentage as the Knights went 2-1-0-0.

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, November 21, 2021.

Battalion’s Brandon Coe Named OHL Player of the Week

San Jose Sharks prospect Brandon Coe of the North Bay Battalion is the OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, five assists and eight points over three consecutive Battalion victories.

Coe strung together three multi-point efforts, continuing an eight game point streak as the Battalion sit atop the Eastern Conference standings. The big 6-foot-5, 203Ib. winger put together a second star performance on Thursday at home to the Ottawa 67’s, registering a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win. Coe picked up an assist on Kyle Jackson’s game winning goal in Oshawa on Friday night, finishing with a pair of helpers as the Battalion defeated the Generals 4-2. He rounded out the weekend with two goals and an assist in Sunday’s 7-3 win over visiting Niagara, earning first star honours while collecting his 150th career OHL point.

A 20-year-old native of Ajax, Ont. and an alternate captain with the Battalion this season, Coe leads the OHL with 24 assists and sits one point back of the League scoring lead with 33 points (9-24–33) through 19 contests. His plus-14 plus/minus rating has him tied for fifth in the OHL. Coe made his professional debut last season, recording five points (1-4–5) in 17 games with the San Jose Barracuda, AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks who selected him in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. Coe was originally North Bay’s first round (3rd overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection from the OHL Cup finalist Toronto Nationals U16 program.

Coe is the first Battalion player to earn the weekly honour since Justin Brazeau last did so in October 2018.

Also considered for the award this week, Peterborough Petes forward Tucker Robertson led all players with 10 points (4-6–10) in three games to climb into the League scoring lead as the Petes went 1-2 on a high-scoring weekend. Windsor Spitfires winger Kyle McDonald was also highly productive, putting up eight points (5-3–8) and three consecutive multi-point efforts as the Spitfires won a pair.

Sting’s Ben Gaudreau Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

San Jose Sharks prospect Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with a record of 2-0-1-0, a 1.97 goals-against average, .942 save percentage and one shutout.

Gaudreau stopped 97 of the 103 shots he faced to help the Sting continue to reverse a slow start to the season. He earned first star honours with 36 saves on Tuesday as Sarnia defeated the CHL’s third-ranked London Knights 4-2 on home ice. Gaudreau was back in the crease on Saturday in Guelph, helping the Sting earn a point despite being outshot with 35 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Storm. He logged another first star performance on Sunday, earning his first career OHL shutout with 26 saves as the Sting blanked the visiting Owen Sound Attack 4-0.

An 18-year-old native of Corbeil, Ont., Gaudreau owns a 5-2-3-0 record with a 2.98 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and one shutout through 10 games this season. The 6-foot-2, 172Ib. third round (81st overall) pick of the San Jose Sharks this past summer starred for Canada’s gold medal-winning National Under-18 Team this past May in Frisco, Texas. He was Sarnia’s first round (7th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, the highest-selected goaltender in Sting franchise history.

Also considered for the award this week were a pair of recent award recipients in Roman Basran of the Mississauga Steelheads and Montreal Canadiens prospect Joe Vrbetic of the North Bay Battalion. Basran went 2-0-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .964 save percentage including a shutout as the Steelheads continued their hot streak. Last week’s Goaltender of the Week, Vrbetic was also 2-0-0-0, posting a 1.50 goals-against average and .939 save percentage with one shutout, carrying over a shutout streak that concluded at a length of 203 minutes and four seconds in a win on Sunday.

Knights’ Antonio Stranges Named OHL Player of the Week

Dallas Stars prospect Antonio Stranges of the London Knights is the OHL Player of the Week, scoring three times while adding four assists for seven points over three contests.

Stranges posted three consecutive multi-point performances as the Knights took five of a possible six points last week. He tied the score late in the third period of London’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Guelph Storm on Tuesday before posting two assists in Friday’s 7-4 win over the Soo Greyhounds, picking up a helper on Max McCue’s second period game winning goal. Stranges finished off the weekend with a season-high three points, scoring a pair of goals in a 7-4 road win over the Erie Otters on Saturday. He collected a primary assist on Cody Morgan’s deciding goal in the third period before tacking on insurance just over three minutes later.

A 5-foot-11, 188Ib. left-winger from Plymouth, Mich., Stranges has 10 points including three goals and seven assists through his first eight games of the season. Now in his third OHL campaign, Stranges has recorded 84 points (35-49–84) over 135 regular season games since joining the Knights as a second round (21st overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He made his professional debut last season, recording an assist during a nine-game stint with the AHL’s Texas Stars, top affiliate of the Dallas Stars who selected him in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Also given consideration for this week’s recognition, Kingston Frontenacs forward Lucas Edmonds posted seven points including a goal and six assists over three games, earning first star honours in Saturday’s shootout win over the Mississauga Steelheads on CBC. Detroit Red Wings prospect Pasquale Zito of the Windsor Spitfires also merited consideration, recording two goals and three assists for five points in two games.

Battalion’s Joe Vrbetic Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Montreal Canadiens prospect Joe Vrbetic of the North Bay Battalion is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with a 0.96 goals-against average, .956 save percentage, one shutout and a record of 1-0-0-1.

The 6-foot-6, 186Ib. Vrbetic stood tall in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Sudbury Wolves on Friday, stopping 29 of 31 shots to help the Troops earn a point on the road. He was back in the crease on Sunday, stopping all 14 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season as the Battalion blanked the visiting Wolves 4-0.

A 19-year-old native of Dunvegan, Ont., Vrbetic owns an 8-2-0-1 record, 2.82 goals-against average, .901 save percentage and one shutout through 11 games this season, helping the Battalion hold down first place in the Central Division. Now in his second full season with the Battalion, Vrbetic has played to an overall record of 22-27-1-1 with a 3.93 goals-against average, .885 save percentage and three shutouts over 54 career regular season games. North Bay’s second round (31st overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Vrbetic was a seventh round (214th overall) choice of the Montreal Canadiens this past summer.

Also receiving consideration for this week’s award, New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox of the Saginaw Spirit went 1-1-0-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. Sudbury Wolves netminder Mitchell Weeks was also steady, stopping 74 of the 80 shots he faced, going 1-1-0-0 with a 2.88 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.

RITCHIE AND BROCHU NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, October 17, 2021.

Generals’ Calum Ritchie Named OHL Player of the Week

Rookie forward Calum Ritchie of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Week with a league-leading seven points including four goals and three assists over three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

The second overall pick of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Ritchie helped the Generals take wins in two of three games last week. The 6-foot-2, 178Ib. centre started with a goal and an assist in a 7-3 road loss to the Ottawa 67’s on Thanksgiving Monday. The Generals were back in the nation’s capital on Friday and this time came away with a 4-1 win as Ritchie scored midway through the third period. He saved his best performance for last, recording two goals and two assists in a 6-3 win over the visiting Peterborough Petes on Sunday night. Ritchie becomes the youngest Generals player to record four points in a single game since Michael Dal Colle did so back on Nov. 4, 2012. His five-game goal-scoring streak brings him in line with John Tavares, who accomplished the feat in the month of January 2006 during his exceptional status rookie season.

A 16-year-old native of Oakville, Ont., Ritchie’s six goals tie him with teammate Ryan Stepien for the League lead. He sits two points back of Sudbury’s Jack Thompson for the OHL lead in points, registering nine (6-3–9) through five games. His 28 shots on goal are the most in the OHL, and his 116 faceoffs are tied for second in the League. Ritchie is a graduate of the Oakville Rangers U16 program, a team he captained before being chosen second overall this past June.

Ritchie becomes the first Generals player to claim Player of the Week honours since Philip Tomasino last did so from January 6-12, 2020.

Other Player of the Week candidates included Calgary Flames prospect Jack Beck who posted four goals and two assists over three games as his Ottawa 67’s went 2-1. Soo Greyhounds winger Cole MacKay also recorded six points (2-4–6) as the Soo Greyhounds took four of a possible six points on the road. London Knights rookie winger Colton Smith was also given consideration after scoring five goals, including his first career OHL hat-trick as the Knights went 3-0 last week.

Knights’ Brett Brochu Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

London Knights netminder Brett Brochu is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with three wins, a 2.55 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

Brochu helped the Knights improve to a League-best 5-0 record with back-to-back wins over the Windsor Spitfires before edging the Sarnia Sting in a shootout on Saturday. He turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced in a 4-3 Thanksgiving Monday shootout road win over the Spitfires, stopping seven of eight Windsor shootout attempts. Brochu was up to the task on Friday when the Knights played host to the Spitfires, making 32 saves in a 5-1 win while drawing an assist on Max McCue’s first goal of the season. He wrapped up the weekend making 29 saves in a 5-4 overtime road win over the Sarnia Sting, none bigger than a game-saving overtime denial that led to a Sean McGurn game winner in transition.

A 19-year-old from Tilbury, Ont., Brochu leads OHL netminders with five wins on the season while posting a 2.49 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. He’s won 14 consecutive regular season games dating back to Feb. 14, 2020, part of a stretch in which he’s won 27 of 28 decisions since Dec. 29, 2019. The 6-foot, 176Ib. Brochu was a member of the OHL’s first all-rookie team during the 2019-20 season, leading the League with a 2.40 goals-against average to win the F.W. Dinty Moore Trophy. His 32 wins that season set a new Knights franchise record for rookie goaltenders. The former sixth round (114th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection made his professional debut with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2020-21, appearing in one game on May 16, 2021.

Also meriting consideration for the award this week was Ottawa Senators prospect Leevi Merilainen of the Kingston Frontenacs who played to a 2-0 mark while recording a 2.50 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox of the Saginaw Spirit was also in the running, going 1-1 with a 2.01 goals-against average and .913 save percentage.

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, October 10, 2021.

Wolves’ Jack Thompson named OHL Player of the Week
Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Jack Thompson of the Sudbury Wolves is the OHL Player of the Week with a league-leading seven points including two goals and five assists over two games.

Thompson, who was named captain of the Wolves ahead of Friday’s home opener, logged consecutive first star performances as Sudbury got off to a perfect start with a pair of victories. The 6-foot-1, 185Ib. defenceman recorded a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win over the visiting Peterborough Petes on Friday, scoring his first of the season on a third period power play. He followed that up with a career-high four point performance on Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie, scoring while adding three assists as the Wolves defeated the Greyhounds 6-3.

A 19-year-old native of Courtice, Ont., Thompson is entering his third season with the Wolves having put up 55 points (21-34–55) over 117 career regular season contests with the franchise. He was a third round (93rd overall) pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2020 NHL Draft before spending part of the 2020-21 season with Surahammars IF of Sweden’s HockeyEttan circuit. Thompson made his pro debut with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch last season, recording an assist in his lone contest. He signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Lightning on May 19, 2021. The right-shot rearguard was originally Sudbury’s second round (30th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Clarington Toros U16 program.

Thompson is the first Wolves representative to earn the distinction since goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen did so for the week of October 1-7, 2018.

Also given consideration for the award were Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov of the North Bay Battalion who started the season with a hat-trick on Thursday, posting a total of four goals and an assist over two games. Montreal Canadiens draftee Jan Mysak of the Hamilton Bulldogs also started strong, recording two goals and three assists over two games.

IceDogs’ Tucker Tynan named OHL Goaltender of the Week
Tucker Tynan of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 1.44 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage in a pair of contests.

Tynan was victorious in his return to the crease on Thursday in Barrie, stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced as the IceDogs defeated the Colts 4-1. The game was Tynan’s first regular season matchup since the tragic events of December 12, 2019 that saw the goaltender suffer a deep laceration to his thigh. The long road of rest and rehabilitation continued to pay off for Tynan on Saturday in Niagara as he earned first star honours, stopping 32 shots before turning aside four of the six Oshawa Generals shootout attempts he faced in a 3-2 home opening victory.

A 19-year-old native of Chicago, Ill., Tynan is embarking on his second season in Niagara after impressing as a rookie in 2019-20 when he went 11-8-3-1 with a 3.80 goals-against average and .910 save percentage over 23 games. The 6-foot, 159Ib. goaltender was originally Niagara’s 10th round (192nd overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Detroit Little Caesars 16U program.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as Flint Firebirds netminder Luke Cavallin was perfect in his lone appearance last week, posting a 35-save shutout as the Firebirds defeated visiting Erie 3-0 on Saturday. London Knights goaltender Brett Brochu joined Tynan in going 2-0 while posting a 2.40 goals-against average and .919 save percentage as London defeated the Owen Sound Attack on back-to-back nights.

PETES’ NICK ROBERTSON NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nick Robertson of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with 10 points in three games including five goals and five assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

Robertson led the Petes to a perfect 3-0 week, outscoring opponents 25-2 in the process as he increased his goal-scoring total to a CHL-leading 55. The third-year winger scored a goal in Thursday’s 8-0 blanking of the visiting Hamilton Bulldogs. He earned first star honours with two goals and two assists in Saturday’s 5-1 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads on home ice, finishing the game with seven shots on goal. Robertson rounded out the weekend with his second five-point effort of the season, scoring twice while adding three assists as the Petes took it to the Niagara IceDogs in a 12-1 road win.

A 19-year-old product of Northville, Mich., Robertson leads the Canadian Hockey League with 55 goals, tacking on 31 assists for the OHL’s ninth-best total of 86 points over 46 games. He recently became the fastest player in Peterborough Petes history to score his 50th goal, doing so on in his 43rd game of the season on Mar. 1st. Robertson is currently fifth in OHL shots on goal with 255 to his credit. He’s eight goals shy of Scott Tottle’s 1983-84 Petes single season franchise record of 63 with six games remaining on the schedule. Robertson was a second round (53rd overall) pick of the Maple Leafs last summer and represented the United States at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship this past January. The Petes selected Robertson with the 16th overall pick of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Red Wings Minor Midgets.

Also considered for the award this week were a pair of Peterborough Petes teammates including Los Angeles Kings prospect Akil Thomas who recorded nine points (4-5–9) over the three wins. Minnesota Wild draftee Hunter Jones was also stellar, playing to a 2-0 record with a 0.50 goals-against average, .986 save percentage with one shutout.

KNIGHTS’ LIAM FOUDY NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Liam Foudy of the London Knights is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with seven points in three games including two goals and five assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

Foudy’s recognition marks the fourth time a Knights player has received the honour this season after he registered multi-point outcomes in all three of London’s wins last week. The fleet-footed winger picked up a pair of assists in Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Guelph Storm before he earned first star honours with a goal and a helper in Friday’s 4-2 victory over the Soo Greyhounds. Foudy was the third star of Sunday’s 6-3 road win over the Erie Otters, notching a goal and two assists as the Knights improved to 41-15-1-1 for first place in the Western Conference.

A 20-year-old native of Scarborough, Ont., Foudy is riding a 14-game point streak that dates back to Jan. 26th, a span in which he also suited up in two NHL contests with the Columbus Blue Jackets, recording his first career NHL point with an assist on Feb. 13th in Buffalo. The 6-foot-1, 182Ib. left-winger sits fourth in London scoring with 62 points (26-36–62) over 41 games including a team-leading plus-34 rating. The former first round (18th overall) pick by the Knights in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection has accumulated 185 points (95-90–185) over 226 career regular season games. He won gold as a member of Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in January. Foudy was Columbus’ first round (18th overall) pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

A pair of other candidates were also given consideration for the award, ones that performed well despite their clubs going winless over the course of the week. Erie Otters forward Chad Yetman registered eight points (3-5–8) over three contests to reach the 70-point mark on the season. Hamilton’s Arthur Kaliyev tied the Bulldogs’ franchise points mark, coming within three points of 100 on the campaign with eight points (1-7–8) over three outings.

FIREBIRDS’ TYLER TUCKER NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that St. Louis Blues prospect Tyler Tucker of the Flint Firebirds is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with 11 points in four games including three goals and eight assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

Tucker joins Firebirds teammate Riley McCourt as the second defenceman to claim the honour this season, marking the fifth different occasion that a Flint player has been recognized. Tucker’s 11 points over an extended week that included a Family Day holiday on Monday led the League as Flint’s club record-setting winning streak reached 15 games. Tucker set a new Firebirds record for points by a defenceman in a single game on Monday, racking up seven consisting of two goals and five assists in a 12-7 road win over the Sarnia Sting. He chipped in with an assist in Thursday’s 4-0 road win over the Niagara IceDogs before scoring his 16th goal of the season and picking up a helper in Friday’s 6-3 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads. Tucker and the Firebirds saw their 15-game winning streak snapped back at home on Saturday as the defender collected an assist in a 4-1 loss to the Kitchener Rangers.

A 19-year-old product of Longlac, Ont., Tucker sits seventh among OHL defencemen with 53 points (16-37–53) over 49 games between Flint and Barrie this season. The fourth-year veteran has registered 24 points (8-16–24) over 21 games since being acquired by the Firebirds on January 7th. A former first round (14th overall) pick of the Barrie Colts in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection, Tucker has recorded 149 points (34-115–149) over 238 career regular season contests. He was a seventh round (200th overall) pick of the St. Louis Blues in the 2018 NHL Draft. Tucker made his professional debut last spring, appearing in two regular season games with the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage.

Two goaltenders were also in the running for this week’s award including Guelph Storm netminder Nico Daws who went 3-0 with a 1.88 goals-against average and .932 save percentage along with Oshawa Generals puckstopper Zachary Paputsakis who won a pair of games while posting a 1.50 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

SPIRIT’S COLE PERFETTI NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that draft eligible Saginaw Spirit forward Cole Perfetti is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with 10 points in three games including four goals and six assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Perfetti becomes the first Spirit player to claim the honour this season, stringing together three straight first star performances as the Spirit maintained their standing atop the West Division with a pair of victories. His five assists in Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday equal a past single game mark recorded by Vincent Trocheck (March 2012) and Marcus Crawford (January 2017) as the Spirit defeated the Greyhounds 7-5. Perfetti followed up on his career high-matching five point effort with his first hat-trick of the season on Friday as the Spirit were edged by the visiting Flint Firebirds 5-4. He rounded out the weekend with a goal and an assist on Saturday as Saginaw bounced back to defeat the Kitchener Rangers 8-2 on home ice. Perfetti became the fastest player in Spirit history to reach the 100 career assist mark in the weekend finale, bringing him to within three points of the century mark in his sophomore season.

An 18-year-old native of Whitby, Ont., Perfetti sits one point back of Ottawa’s Marco Rossi for the OHL scoring lead, boasting 97 points (34-63–97) over 53 games this season. The sharpshooting winger has collected four consecutive multi-point efforts and sits tied with teammate Damien Giroux for the team lead with 34 goals. The fourth-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Draft Rankings, Perfetti recently competed in the 2020 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Hamilton, Ont. He was a key member of Canada’s silver medal-winning National Under-18 Team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup last summer, recording 12 points (8-4–12) over five contests. He was Saginaw’s first round (5th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Vaughan Kings Minor Midgets.

A pair of goaltenders were also considered for the award this week including Guelph Storm netminder Nico Daws who stopped 77 of the 78 shots he faced, posting a 0.50 goals-against average, .987 save percentage and one shutout in wins over London and Owen Sound. North Bay Battalion rookie Joe Vrbetic was also outstanding, stopping 79 of the 81 shots that came his way to post a 2-0 record with a 0.96 goals-against average, .975 save percentage and one shutout to defeat Barrie and Mississauga.

FIREBIRDS’ EVGENIY OKSENTYUK NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Flint Firebirds forward Evgeniy Oksentyuk is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with eight points including two goals and six assists in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-3.

This marks the fourth different time a Firebirds player has received the award this season as Oksentyuk helped the club extend it’s franchise-best winning streak to 10 games with road wins in Erie, Hamilton and Oshawa. Oksentyuk recorded an assist in Friday’s 5-4 overtime win over the Otters before collecting three helpers in a 7-3 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The 5-foot-7, 157Ib. winger wrapped up the weekend by matching a season-high with four points including two goals and two assists in a 5-3 win over the Generals, pushing his current point streak to eight games. The Firebirds wrapped up the weekend as winners of a club record seven consecutive road contests, matching their season-high mark of 32 victories set in 2016-17.

An 18-year-old native of Brest, Belarus, Oksentyuk sits second in Flint scoring with 62 points (25-37–62) over 46 games. He set a Firebirds club record earlier this season when he strung together a 17-game point streak from Nov. 15 to Jan. 17. The left-winger represented his native Belarus at the 2020 IIHF U20 Division 1A World Championship in December, recording seven points (1-6–7) over five contests. Oksentyuk was chosen by the Firebirds with the fifth overall pick of the 2019 CHL Import Draft. He attended rookie camp with the Arizona Coyotes last September.

Also considered for the award this week were Ottawa 67’s winger Jack Quinn who boosted his goal-scoring total to a league-leading 44 with eight points (3-5–8) over three contests. Peterborough Petes winger Nick Robertson was considered after pushing his goal-scoring streak to 14 games as part of an eight point (4-4–8) week.
