Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, March 20, 2022.

Spitfires’ Matthew Maggio Named OHL Player of the Week

Windsor Spitfires forward Matthew Maggio is the OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, seven assists and 10 points along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8 in four contests.

Maggio helped the Spits surge to within one point of first place in the Western Conference with three straight wins. After recording an assist in a 4-3 road loss to Sarnia on Tuesday, Maggio matched a career-high with four points including two goals and two assists, netting the overtime winner for his 30th of the campaign in a 6-5 road win over Owen Sound on Wednesday. He was a catalyst in another big Spitfires road win on Saturday in Flint, scoring while adding two assists for second star honours as Windsor defeated the first place Firebirds 6-3. Maggio recorded a pair of primary assists in Sunday’s 7-4 victory to guide Windsor to another win over Flint, pushing them to within one point of the Firebirds at the top of the standings.

A native of Tecumseh, Ont., Maggio sits second in Spitfires scoring with 69 points including 31 goals and 38 assists over 54 games to go with a plus/minus rating of plus-22. Maggio’s seven game winning goals are tied for the third most in the OHL. The 6-foot, 181Ib. right-winger has accumulated 38 goals, 52 assists and 90 points in 134 career regular season contests between Windsor and Ottawa. He was originally a fifth round (86th overall) pick of the 67’s in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Maggio attended rookie camp with the Washington Capitals last September.

Also considered for the award this week, London Knights teammates Luke Evangelista and Antonio Stranges both had impressive weeks as the Knights went 2-1-0-1. Evangelista led all players with 12 points (3-9–12) over four games, reaching a league-leading 48 goals on the season. Stranges put up 11 points (6-5–11) over four outings including a five-point effort on Friday against Saginaw.

Bulldogs’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marco Costantini of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 3-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average, .973 save percentage and one shutout.

Costantini stopped 71 of the 73 shots that came his way in wins over Oshawa, Kingston and Ottawa as the Bulldogs became the OHL’s first team to reach the 40-win mark. He stopped all 18 shots he faced in Monday’s Outdoor Showcase as the Bulldogs won their 12th straight game, blanking the Oshawa Generals 3-0 at Tim Hortons Field. Costantini turned in a first star performance on Friday in Kingston, making 29 saves as the Bulldogs beat the Frontenacs 3-1. He rounded out the weekend on Sunday in Ottawa, stopping 24 in a 3-1 win over the 67’s.

A 19-year-old Hamilton native, Costantini owns the league’s second-lowest goals-against average of 2.48, going 25-9-2-2 with a .912 save percentage and league-high matching four shutouts. Costantini has won 16 of his last 17 starts, and earns OHL Goaltender of the Week honours for the second time this season. He was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the OHL Cup finalist Vaughan Kings U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes stopped 92 of 97 shots, going 2-1 across three starts with a 1.67 goals-against average and .948 save percentage. Arizona Coyotes prospect Anson Thornton of the Sarnia Sting was also 2-1, recording his first career OHL shutout to finish with a 2.34 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

Knights’ Luke Evangelista Named OHL Player of the Week

Nashville Predators prospect Luke Evangelista of the London Knights is the OHL Player of the Week with six goals, four assists and 10 points in three games with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Back in action for the first time since Jan. 23rd, the Knights won three straight over the weekend as Evangelista led the way, scoring in all three outings. He opened the scoring on the power play in Friday’s 5-1 win over the Windsor Spitfires before collecting a career-high five points including a hat trick and two assists in Saturday’s 6-3 defeat of the Kitchener Rangers. The 6-foot, 171Ib. right-winger was back at it on Sunday, hitting the empty net twice while adding two assists in London’s 8-3 road win over the Owen Sound Attack to extend his point streak to seven games. Evangelista surpassed his 2019-20 point total of 61 (23-38–61) recorded over 62 games in his 31st game of the season on Sunday.

A 19-year-old native of Oakville, Ont., Evangelista sits tied for the OHL goal-scoring lead with 32 tallies in just 31 games. He’s fourth in overall points with 64 (32-32–64) and leads OHL players with 2.06 points-per-game. The third-year forward was a second round (42nd overall) pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2020 NHL Draft, and signed a three-year entry level NHL contract in November 2020. Evangelista was London’s first round (14th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Flint Firebirds forward Amadeus Lombardi registered a goal and five assists for six points in a pair of victories for his club. Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov of the North Bay Battalion was also a force, scoring four goals along with two assists for six points as the Troops went 3-0 on home ice.

Generals’ Patrick Leaver Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Patrick Leaver of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0-0-0 with a 1.44 goals-against average, .955 save percentage and one shutout.

Leaver claims the honour for the second time this season, helping the Generals put together a perfect weekend by stopping 64 of the 67 shots he faced. He was in the crease on Friday in Mississauga as the Generals edged the first place Steelheads 4-3 in a shootout. Leaver stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced before turning aside all nine Steelheads shootout attempts to secure the win. He was back at it on Saturday in Barrie, posting his second shutout of the season as the Generals were outshot 31-17 but managed to defeat the Colts 1-0 on a third period goal from Ryan Gagnier.

An 18-year-old from Perth, Ont., Leaver leads all OHL goaltenders with a .935 save percentage since January 1. His overall season totals include a 15-9-1-1 record, 2.95 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and two shutouts in 28 games. The former eighth round (158th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection was the 29th-ranked North American goaltender on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings released in January.

Also considered for the award this week, London Knights netminder Brett Brochu played to a 3-0-0-0 record with a 2.33 goals-against average and .936 save percentage as the Knights continue to lead the Western Conference. Luke Cavallin of the Flint Firebirds was 2-0-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .956 save percentage as the Firebirds remain hot.

Firebirds’ Brennan Othmann Named OHL Player of the Week

New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds is the OHL Player of the Week with seven points including a goal and six assists across three games.

Othmann helped the Firebirds win two of three last week, earning first star recognition twice. He chipped in with an assist in Wednesday’s 5-3 win over the visiting rival Saginaw Spirit before a three-assist effort on Friday as Flint skated to a 6-3 win in Sarnia. Othmann had a goal and two assists along with nine shots on goal on Saturday as the Firebirds dropped a 4-3 decision on the back-end of a home-and-home against the Sting.

An 18-year-old native of Pickering, Ont., Othmann leads the Firebirds with 27 points (14-13–27) in 17 games this season. His 92 shots on goal are the third-most in the OHL as he produces at a 1.59 point-per-game clip, the fifth-highest pace in the League. A member of Canada’s gold medal-winning National Under-18 Team this past May in Frisco, Texas, Othmann was selected by the New York Rangers with the 16th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft. The former OHL Cup champion was Flint’s first round (2nd overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and was named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team in 2019-20 with 33 points (17-16–33) in 55 games.

Also considered for the award this week, Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison recorded seven points (1-6–7) as his club picked up five of a possible six points. Nashville Predators prospect Luke Evangelista of the London Knights led the League with five goals along with an assist over three games, and Buffalo Sabres prospect Josh Bloom of the Saginaw Spirit had six points (3-3–6), headlined by two shorthanded goals and a game winner.

Petes’ Tye Austin Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Tye Austin of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after winning a pair of games while posting a 2.50 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.

Austin recently returned from injury and turned aside 60 of the 65 shots that came his way last week. He made 19 saves in Thursday’s 5-3 win over the visiting North Bay Battalion, snapping the Troops’ four-game winning streak in Mason McTavish’s return to the Petes lineup. Austin provided a season-high 41 saves in Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Ottawa 67’s, earning first star recognition as the Petes were outshot 43-29, earning their third straight win.

A 19-year-old from Pembroke, Ont., Austin missed a month of action with a shoulder injury, returning to the Petes’ lineup on November 18th. The 6-foot-6, 200Ib. netminder is 3-2-0-0 with a 3.83 goals-against average and .888 save percentage in six games this season. Selected by the Petes in the third round (43rd overall) of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Austin owns a career mark of 14-16-0-1 with a 4.16 goals-against average and .877 save percentage through 42 career regular season games in maroon and white.

Also considered for this week’s award, last week’s recipient Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting was strong once again, going 1-1-0-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in two games. London Knights goaltender Brett Brochu was kept busy, making 113 saves over three outings. He posted a 2.95 goals-against average and .926 save percentage as the Knights went 2-1-0-0.

If Minor Midget AAA is any indication of offensive prowess, then Luke Evangelista of the London Knights has it in spades. During the 2017-2018 season, Evangelista skated for the Oakville Rangers and potted 39 goals and 51 assists in 36 games. The Knights would select him with the 14th overall pick at the 2018 Ontario Hockey League’s Priority Selection.

Here’s what OHL Central Scouting had to say at the time of the draft:

Luke is a dynamic winger that never stops moving his feet and putting pressure on the opposition. He is a very good skater that is quick to jump to open holes and pounce on loose pucks. He is creative offensively and uses his high skill level to produce with the best in his league. He competes hard each and every shift and you always know what you are getting with this player. He shoots the puck well and is extremely accurate. He is used in every situation and thrives on the power play.

If the 2018 preseason was an indication of things to follow, then there should have been a lot of optimism surrounding Evangelista. As has been said multiple times here, playing on a Dale Hunter squad is more about developing a player in all aspects of the game rather then just handing a spot to someone. But the transition to the OHL, at least offensively, wasn’t kind to him as he dressed for 27 games and notched just 2 assists.

What did happen however, is Evangelista learned how important playing a 200-foot game is and there aren’t many better to learn from then Coach Hunter.

It has been quite the second season for Evangelista as he appeared in 62 games when the OHL seasons was paused due to the corona virus. He’s scored 23 goals while adding 38 helpers and is a plus-15 on the season. He sits among the top 10 draft eligible players in assists, points and plus/minus.

There is no “ugly” to Evangelista’s game, but there is some work to be done. First and foremost, he needs to get stronger. While the willingness to battle along the wall and drive to the net is there, he gets overpowered frequently by stronger players. Yet, there is no hesitation in him and as he adds some muscle, he will begin to win his share of those battles.

What we do like about Evangelista is his hockey IQ. He sees the ice extremely well and can anticipate what is going to happen. His positioning is excellent both in the offensive zone and the defensive zone. Combined with his excellent playmaking abilities, he’s able to set up teammates for quality scoring chances. He’s dangerous when he slows down the game and assesses quickly the options available. Making those same plays at top speed however, isn’t something displayed that often. He does get some powerplay time in London and usually sets up shop from the half wall where he can distribute pretty much at will.

Evangelista has also become effective on the penalty kill. As mentioned, his positioning and anticipation are excellent, but his stick positioning is also excellent, using it very effectively to take away lanes and shots. Again, that all comes under the tutelage of Hunter and the coaching staff.

It’s not always easy to gauge the potential of a young London Knights’ player who is in their draft year. For the most part, the Knights are often a deep, talented team and these youngsters play a depth role until their draft plus one year. But if you watch Evangelista often enough, you can see that the tools, and the tool box are there and they are just waiting to burst out when the opportunity arises.

Since the start of this season, we’ve believed Evangelista was worth second round consideration at the 2020 National Hockey League Draft when teams assemble in Montreal. NHL Central Scouting agrees (finally?) as they initially had him ranked as a C Prospect (typically a 4th, 5th or 6th round option) and moved him up to a B Prospect in November (2nd or 3rd round) and finally 58th overall amongst North American skaters on their mid-term rankings. That still puts him in the third round, but someone will give him some real consideration prior to that.

He deserves it.

OHL ONSIDE touches down in Kitchener: With the Barrie Colts in town Friday, the Kitchener Rangers are hosting their fourth annual OHL ONSIDE event in support of ending gender-based violence with the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region. Hishon, Bieber’s close friendship blasts Attack into social media stratosphere: The CHL’s smallest market hit the world stage early Monday morning when Justin Bieber blasted out a photo wearing a personalized Owen Sound Attack jersey while posing with assistant coach Joey Hishon, a former Attack star who helped guide the team to an OHL Championship in 2010-11. The image was sent out to Bieber’s 129-million Instagram followers, becoming an instant viral sensation. Hishon and Bieber, the Stratford duo, have been hitting the ice in Los Angeles and New York recently as Bieber prepares for his eventual 10-breakaway challenge against former Attack goaltender and NHL all-star Jordan Binnington. Studnicka a shorthanded force for Bruins: Niagara IceDogs graduate and long-time Oshawa Generals forward Jack Studnicka received high praise over at bostonbruins.com this week. The 21-year-old centreman has scored an AHL-leading seven shorthanded goals this season as part of a 46-point (22-24–46) rookie campaign. Studnicka was Boston’s second round pick in 2017 and played four seasons in the OHL from 2015-19.

Garlent named ECHL Player of the Month: Peterborough Petes graduate Hunter Garlent of the Florida Everblades has been named ECHL Player of the Month for February. The 25-year-old recorded seven goals, 12 assists and 19 points in 12 games, tacking on a plus-15 rating. Garlent is tied for seventh among ECHL rookies with 41 points (16-25–41) in 51 games this season. Following a five-year OHL career between Guelph and Peterborough from 2011-16, he played U SPORTS Men’s Hockey at St. Mary’s University from 2016-19.

Erie Otters at Niagara IceDogs

The Erie Otters (25-25-4-7) are looking to maintain that Western Conference eighth place seed and the Niagara IceDogs (18-36-5-1) are hoping to get the leg up on the Kingston Frontenacs for eighth in the East.

The Otters are led by third year skaters Maxim Golod (25-52—77) and Chad Yetman (41-31—72), and have top NHL Draft prospect Jamie Drysdale monitoring the blueline.

The IceDogs have struggled to find themselves in the win column as of late with only one win in their last 17 games, but they currently sit tied with the eighth place Kingston Frontenacs, meaning that playoff berth could be anyone’s.

Minnesota Wild prospect Ivan Lodnia sits atop the Niagara scoring race with 60 points to his name (26-34—60) and is followed up by fellow overager Oliver Castleman, posting a 57-point total (21-36—57).

The Otters hold a 4-0-0-1 tally over the course of the season and will wrap up their series with the ‘Dogs on Saturday night at the Meridian Centre.

Dwindling in eighth place and tied for 42 points on the year with Niagara, the Kingston Frontenacs (19-36-2-2) will head to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday hungry to hold down the playoff spot and widen that point cushion.

The next few wins are just as crucial for the ninth place Greyhounds (26-31-3-1), who trail the Erie Otters by five points over in the Western Conference.

Shane Wright continues to lead the squad with a franchise record-setting 66 points, whose numbers match Connor McDavid’s rookie total as a fellow exceptional status skater. The 16-year-old rookie notched his first OHL hat-trick last weekend to hit the 38 goal-marker, surpassing former Kingston Canadian Bernie Nicholls’ 36 rookie goals scored over a single season. Linemate Zayde Wisdom has kept up consistent numbers, boasting 58 points over his 59 appearances.

Zack Trott leads the pack in Sault Ste. Marie, boasting 61 points over 59 games in his third OHL season, and trailing five points behind him is sophomore skater Rory Kerins with his team-highest 29 goals.

Saturday will see the two squads square off for the second and final time this season. The ‘Hounds scored five in a row to defeat the Fronts 5-2 back in late January in their first meeting.

OHL Writers’ Draft Eligible Player of the Month for January

In the years that I have been doing this, I don’t ever recall a month like January where so many players could have been chosen our Draft Eligible Player of the Month. Tyson Foerster, Luke Evangelista, Brett Brochu, James Hardie, Ty Tullio, Jack Quinn, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti and Quinton Byfield were all, for different reasons, deserving.

We settled on Mr Consistency, Cole Perfetti of the Saginaw Spirit for the second time this season.

Through 13 games in the month of January, Perfetti found the back of the net 8 times while assisting on 21 others and finishing a plus-16. He was held off the score sheet just once, a January 15th matchup against the Soo Greyhounds. In the 12 remaining contests, 9 were multi point games.

Perfetti was named the game’s first star 3 times and the game’s third star twice. But let’s not get into the Ontario Hockey League’s three-star selection process.

Serious consideration was given to London Knights netminder Brendan Brochu. The rookie keeper appeared in 9 games in January winning all of them while posting a sparkling 1.89 goals-against-average and a .940 save-percentage.

Foerster appeared in 11 games scoring 8 goals and assisting on 9 others. Evangelista scored 6 goals and 11 assists in 11 games, Hardie 12 goals and 8 assists in 11 games, Tullio 7 goals and 9 assists in 13 games, Quinn 17 goals and 7 assists in 12 games, Rossi 6 goals and 16 assists in 12 games and Byfield 7 goals and 6 assists in 7 games.

2020 Top Prospects Game

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with National Hockey League Central Scouting announce that forwards Luke Evangelista of the London Knights and Ryan Francis of the Cape Breton Eagles have been added to the 2020 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

The pair replace Hendrix Lapierre of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens and Oliver Suni of the Oshawa Generals who will be unable to compete due to injury.

Evangelista is a 17-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, playing in his second season with the Knights after being chosen in the first round of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.  He ranks fourth in team scoring with 33 points in 35 games including 14 goals and 19 assists.  Francis, an 18-year-old from Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia, is in his third season with the Eagles where he ranks second in team scoring with 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points in 35 games.  He was originally selected by the club in the second round of the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft.  Both players were identified as ‘C’ rated prospects in NHL Central Scouting’s Players to Watch list released in November.

The 25th annual showcase of top CHL players eligible for the NHL Draft takes place on Thursday January 16, 2020, and is hosted by the Hamilton Bulldogs with 40 talents from across the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

OHL’s Draft Eligible Statistical Leaders: September

Sure, most teams have yet to play a handful of games, but the calendar has switched from September to October (are you getting ready for winter yet?) so it’s time to look at the first time draft eligible player statistical leaders as we begin the journey towards the 2020 National Hockey League Draft.

Three things we know for sure: 1) the list of names today will not be the same in March. 2) Barring a catastrophe or major injury, expect to see Quinton Byfield to stay at or near the top of the lists. 3) Same goes for Jamie Drysdale among blueliners.

Byfield leads the way in goals, points and tied for top spot in assists. Not only does he lead the league’s draft eligible players in points, but he leads the entire OHL. A sure fire top 5 pick in Montreal on June 26, 2020 but there are those (yours truly included) that believe that he could challenge for the number one spot at season’s end.
