Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, March 5, 2023.



Sting’s Christian Kyrou Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Dallas Stars prospect Christian Kyrou of the Sarnia Sting is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, five assists and seven points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Kyrou started his week off strong on Wednesday, recording an assist along with the shootout game winner as the Sting defeated the Soo Greyhounds 4-3 to clinch a spot in the 2023 OHL Playoffs. He found the scoresheet again on Friday, also recording three helpers as the Sting defeated the visiting London Knights 6-1. Kyrou helped the Sting close out a perfect weekend on Sunday, scoring the game winner late in the third period to finish with two goals, an assist and first star honours in a 9-6 win over the Windsor Spitfires.

A 19-year-old native of Komoka, Ont., Kyrou has recorded 67 points (18-49-67) in 56 games between Sarnia and Erie this season. He was a second round (50th overall) pick of the Dallas Stars last summer following 18 goals, 42 assists and 60 points in 68 games with the Erie Otters last season. The 5-foot-11, 182lb. defenceman was originally Erie’s fifth round (84th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Barrie Colts overage forward Evan Vierling produced three goals, six assists and nine points in three contests last week. Detroit Red Wings prospect Amadeus Lombardi of the Flint Firebirds contributed three goals and three assists for six points in two victories.

Battalion’s Dom DiVincentiis Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Winnipeg Jets prospect Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two wins including a shutout, a goals-against average of 1.00 and a save percentage of .972.

DiVincentiis backstopped the Battalion in back-to-back victories last week, starting with a 23-save effort in Thursday’s 5-2 win over the visiting Sudbury Wolves. The win was DiVincentiis’ 31st of the season, pushing him ahead of Jake Smith’s previously established single season franchise wins record from 2015-16.  DiVincentiis was back in the crease on Friday in Mississauga, stopping all 46 shots he faced to earn his third career OHL shutout as the Battalion defeated the Steelheads 3-0.

An 18-year-old native of Bolton, Ont., DiVincentiis owns a record of 32-9-2-0 on the season with a league-best 2.45 goals-against average along with a .915 save percentage. He was the recipient of the OHL’s F.W. ‘Dinty’ Moore Trophy in 2021-22, posting a league-low 2.59 goals-against average among rookies to go with a 14-8-0-1 record and .907 save percentage. DiVincentiis was selected in the seventh round (207th overall) by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2022 NHL Draft.  He’s a former sixth round (116th overall) pick by the Battalion in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

Also in the running for the award this week, New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox of the Saginaw Spirit turned aside 88 shots, including a 59-save shutout in Peterborough on Thursday to end the week with a 1.44 goals-against average, and .967 save percentage. Marco Costantini of the Kitchener Rangers played to a 2-0 mark with a 2.00 goals-against average, .944 save percentage and one shutout.

Steelheads’ James Hardie Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

James Hardie of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, eight assists and 10 points in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

Helping guide the Steelheads to a 3-1 showing last week, Hardie got things started with Mississauga’s lone goal in a 2-1 road loss to the Erie Otters on Monday. The Steelheads bounced back on Thursday with a 6-2 win over the Niagara IceDogs as Hardie put together the first of two consecutive four-assist outings. He registered another four assists on Friday, helping linemate Zander Veccia score his first OHL hat trick as the Steelheads defeated the Central Division-leading North Bay Battalion 5-4. Hardie contributed another goal on Sunday as the Steelheads closed out the weekend with a 5-4 win over the IceDogs on home ice. Currently riding a 10-game point streak, seven of Hardie’s eight assists last week were primary helpers.

A 21-year-old native of Innisfil, Ont., Hardie currently sits eighth in OHL points with 57 (28-29–57) through 41 games this season. His 181 shots on goal are the fourth-highest total in the League. Mississauga’s fist round (8th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection is the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer (118) and point producer (219) in his 230 career regular season contests. Hardie attended rookie camp with the Boston Bruins last September.

Also given consideration for the award this week were Steelheads teammate Zander Veccia who recorded five goals, four assists and nine points in four games. Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov of the North Bay Battalion was also a standout, recording five goals and two assists over three outings.

Frontenacs’ Mason Vaccari Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Mason Vaccari of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0 with a 1.64 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Vaccari backstopped the Frontenacs to back-to-back road wins, starting with a 45-save effort on Monday in Peterborough to earn third star recognition as the Frontenacs defeated the Petes 2-1. The rookie netminder was excellent again on Saturday, making 25 saves in a 6-2 victory over the Niagara IceDogs. Vaccari saw relief duty on Sunday afternoon in Guelph, stopping eight of nine shots as the Frontenacs fell 6-2 to the Storm.

An 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., Vaccari owns a 9-6-0-0 record with a 3.22 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in his first 16 games with the Frontenacs this season. The 5-foot-9, 178Ib. netminder spent last season with the OJHL’s Cobourg Cougars, going 9-7-0 with a 3.85 goals-against average and .878 save percentage in 16 games. Vaccari was Kingston’s fourth round (61st overall) pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection from the Vaughan Kings U16 program.

Kitchener Rangers netminder Marco Costantini was also given consideration for the award, recording two wins, a 2.00 goals-against average and .944 save percentage in victories over Ottawa and London last week.

Colts’ Evan Vierling Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Evan Vierling of the Barrie Colts is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, posting five goals, five assists and 10 points as the Colts won three of four contests last week.

Vierling started his week off strong on Tuesday, recording a goal and five assists as the Colts defeated the visiting Sudbury Wolves 7-5. He found the scoresheet again on Friday in Guelph, helping the Colts defeat the Storm 3-2 in overtime. Vierling’s second multi-goal effort of the season came Saturday at home to North Bay as his second of the game was the deciding marker coming 2:34 into the third period. Vierling’s was the game’s first star, finishing with two goals and an assist. He helped the Colts earn a point on Sunday in North Bay, extending his goal-scoring streak to six games with a tally in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Battalion.

A 20-year-old from Aurora, Ont., Vierling leads the Colts with 38 points including 15 goals and 23 assists in 24 games. The former fifth round NHL Draft pick by the New York Rangers in 2020 has recorded 156 points (55-101–156) in 182 career OHL regular season games between Flint and Barrie after being chosen second overall by the Firebirds in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Vierling attended training camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, Kitchener Rangers captain Francesco Pinelli scored twice and added six assists in a pair of victories. Windsor Spitfires captain Matthew Maggio was also productive, with a total of six goals on the week including a five-goal effort on Thursday night against the Erie Otters.

Rangers’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marco Costantini of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0 with a shutout, a 0.50 goals-against average and a .981 save percentage as the Rangers enter the holiday break on a six-game winning streak.

Costantini was in the crease for Kitchener’s 9-0 Friday night win over the visiting Soo Greyhounds as he turned aside 22 shots for his second shutout of the season and eighth of his OHL career. He turned aside 30 shots on Sunday afternoon in Mississauga, sending the Rangers into the break with a first star performance in a 5-1 win over the Steelheads.

A 20-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., Costantini owns an overall record of 11-8-0-0 with a 3.16 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 20 games between Kitchener and Hamilton this season. Last year’s runner-up in OHL Goaltender of the Year voting, Costantini hoisted the J. Ross Robertson Cup as an OHL champion with the Hamilton Bulldogs and owns career regular season totals that include a record of 52-32-8-2 with a 3.15 goals-against average, .898 save percentage and eight shutouts in 99 games. He was 16-2-1-0 in the 2022 OHL Playoffs with a 2.29 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and three shutouts. Originally Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Costantini attended rookie camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, Sarnia Sting netminder Nicholas Surzycia posted a 2.00 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in wins over Erie and Flint.

Knights’ Brody Crane Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Brody Crane of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, three assists and seven points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-3.

Helping the Knights to a perfect 3-0 showing, Crane opened up the weekend with a pair of goals on Friday as London defeated visiting Barrie in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win. He registered a career-high four points on Saturday, scoring twice while adding two assists as the Knights defeated the Windsor Spitfires 6-1. The 5-foot-11, 185lb. forward contributed another assist on Sunday as the Knights closed out the weekend with a 4-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds.

An 18-year-old native of Union, Ont., Crane has produced six goals, eight assists and 14 points in 16 games this season. The former fourth round (62nd overall) pick by the Knights in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection has registered 14 goals, 15 assists and 29 points in 72 career regular season games. The son of former Knights, Ottawa 67’s and Windsor Spitfires forward Derrick Crane (1990-93), Brody attended rookie camp with the New Jersey Devils this past fall.

Also given consideration for the award this week were recent award recipient Deni Goure of the Owen Sound Attack, who recorded three goals, five assists and eight points (3-5-8) in four games. Logan Morrison of the Hamilton Bulldogs was also a standout, recording one goal and six helpers (1-6-7) over three outings.

Wolves’ Joe Ranger Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Joe Ranger of the Sudbury Wolves is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two wins, a goals-against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .931.

Defending the crease in back-to-back victories, Ranger turned aside 32 of the 35 shots that came his way as Sudbury opened up the weekend with a 6-3 victory over the Guelph Storm on Friday. The 6-foot, 191lb. netminder returned to the crease on Saturday, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced as the Wolves dominated the Kitchener Rangers in a 6-1 win at home.

A 20-year-old from Carp, Ont., Ranger owns a 6-6-2-0 record with a 3.37 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 14 games this season. The former fourth round (63rd overall) pick by the Mississauga Steelheads in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection currently holds a 28-25-7-0 record in 69 regular season OHL appearances between Sudbury and Mississauga.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as North Bay Battalion netminder Dom DiVincentiis went 2-0 on the weekend, recording a 2.00 goals-against average and .930 save percentage in wins over Barrie and Guelph. Kitchener Rangers goaltender Marco Costantini went 2-1-0-0, posting a 2.36 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.

Spitfires’ Matthew Maggio Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

New York Islanders prospect Matthew Maggio of the Windsor Spitfires is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, four assists and seven points over three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-5.

Suiting up at the WFCU Centre for the first time since returning from the New York Islanders, Maggio posted a goal and two assists, setting up Alex Christopoulos’ overtime winner on Thanksgiving Monday as the Spits defeated the Soo Greyhounds 3-2. He proceeded to add two assists in Windsor’s 6-3 road win over the Sarnia Sting on Friday and closed out the weekend with a pair of goals in a 5-4 overtime loss in Owen Sound on Saturday.

A 19-year-old native of Tecumseh, Ont., Maggio has points in all four of his games this season, posting four goals and four assists for eight points. He was a fifth round (142nd overall) pick of the New York Islanders this past summer following 38 goals, 47 assists and 85 points in 66 games last season. Originally selected by the Ottawa 67’s in the fifth round of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Maggio is embarking on his fourth OHL season and is one goal shy of 50 on his OHL career.

Also given consideration for the award this week were Owen Sound Attack forward and top 2023 NHL Draft prospect Colby Barlow, who recorded four goals and two assists (4-2-6) including a hat trick and overtime winner in three games last week. Chicago Blackhawks blue line prospect Ethan Del Mastro of the Mississauga Steelheads was also a standout, recording five points (1-4–5) as the Trout went 3-0.

Frontenacs’ Ivan Zhigalov Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Colorado Avalanche prospect Ivan Zhigalov of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 1.50 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage.

Leading Kingston to an undefeated weekend at home, Zhigalov stopped 29 of the 31 shots that came his way as the Fronts won 4-2 against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday. The 6-foot-3, 173Ib. goaltender continued to defend the crease against the Guelph Storm on Saturday, blocking 30 of the 31 shots he faced in a 6-1 win.

A 19-year-old from Minsk, Belarus, Zhigalov owns a 3-1-0-1 record with a 1.78 goals-against average and .945 save percentage in five games this season. The seventh round (225th overall) pick of the Colorado Avalanche this past summer spent the 2021-22 season with the QMJHL’s Sherbrooke Phoenix, playing to a 26-9-3 record with a 2.84 goals-against-average and .892 save percentage. He participated in the 2022 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Kitchener, Ont., and was Kingston’s first round (47th overall) pick in the 2022 CHL Import Draft.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as Sudbury Wolves netminder Joe Ranger went 1-0-0-1 on the weekend, posting a  2.37 goals-against average and .933 save percentage. Kitchener Rangers goaltender Marco Costantini went 1-1-0-0 with his new club, posting a 2.55 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.

Firebirds’ Brennan Othmann Named OHL Player of the Week

New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds is the OHL Player of the Week, recording six points including a goal and five assists in four contests.

Othmann helped guide the Firebirds to a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Championship Series, scoring shorthanded while adding two assists in Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Windsor Spitfires in Game 5. Othmann assisted on both Flint goals in a 4-2 loss on Friday in Game 4, and pitched in with a helper in Wednesday’s 6-3 win over Windsor in Game 3.

A 19-year-old native of Pickering, Ont., Othmann leads the Firebirds in playoff scoring with 23 points including nine goals and 14 assists in 17 games. The 6-foot, 180Ib. left-winger led Flint with 50 goals, 47 assists and 97 points in 66 regular season games, giving him 130 points (67-63–130) through 121 career regular season games after being selected second overall by the Firebirds in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. Othmann was selected by New York with the 16th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft and signed a three-year entry level contract with the Rangers on August 12, 2021.

Also considered for the award this week, Windsor Spitfires forward Wyatt Johnston had six points (2-4–6) in four outings, as did Spits teammate Matthew Maggio (4-2–6) as Windsor goes to Flint for Game 6 on Tuesday trailing in the series 3-2.

Bulldogs’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Hamilton Bulldogs netminder Marco Costantini is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for a third straight week, going 2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and one shutout.

Costantini backstopped the Bulldogs to an Eastern Conference title, making 27 saves in a 6-4 victory over the North Bay Battalion in Game 3 on Wednesday. He returned to the crease for his third shutout of the OHL Playoffs on Friday as the Bulldogs took a 12th consecutive win, blanking the Battalion 6-0.

A 19-year-old product of Hamilton, Costantini was voted the Eastern Conference’s Top Goaltender this past season with league-leading figures that include a 2.32 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and six shutouts. He played to a mark of 31-9-2-2 in 45 games, improving to 41-24-8-2 with a 3.15 goals-against average and .897 save percentage in his 79-game OHL regular season career. Costantini has played to a postseason record of 12-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average and .933 save percentage. He was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

Bulldogs’ Avery Hayes Named OHL Player of the Week

Avery Hayes of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Player of the Week, leading the League with seven points including three goals and four assists in a pair of victories.

Hayes helped propel the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead over the North Bay Battalion in the Eastern Conference Championship Series, putting together a pair of multi-point outings. The third-year winger scored and recorded three assists in Friday night’s 5-2 Game 1 win, earning first star honours. He followed-up with two goals and an assist on Sunday, powering the Bulldogs to a 5-0 win at FirstOntario Centre.

A 19-year-old native of Westland, Mich., Hayes leads the OHL Playoffs with 2.29 points-per-game, recording 16 points (5-11–16) in seven games for the Bulldogs, who have played to a 10-0 mark. He scored 41 goals and finished with 79 points in 66 regular season contests, giving him 126 points (63-63–126) over 172 career regular season games with Hamilton. Hayes was the Bulldogs’ sixth round (118th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Hayes’ linemate Logan Morrison recorded five points (2-3–5) in the first two games of the series. Bulldogs defender Arber Xhekaj had three points (1-2–3) and a plus-6 rating in Games 1 and 2.

Costantini stopped 48 of the 50 shots sent his direction in a pair of Eastern Conference Championship Series victories over the North Bay Battalion on home ice. He turned aside 20 of 22 shots in Friday’s 5-2 Game 1 win before returning to the crease on Sunday, making 28 saves for his second shutout of the OHL Playoffs as the Dogs defeated the Troops 5-0.

Spitfires’ Wyatt Johnston Named OHL Player of the Week

Dallas Stars prospect Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Player of the Week, leading the League with 10 points including four goals and six assists in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

Johnston recorded three straight multi-point efforts to help the Spitfires eliminate the Kitchener Rangers in five games and reach the Western Conference Championship Series for the first time since 2011. He rallied the Spits from a pair of early deficits in Kitchener on Tuesday and Thursday, registering consecutive four point (2-2–4) showings in Games 3 and 4 on the road. He picked up a pair of helpers, setting up Andrew Perrott’s game winning goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Rangers at home in Game 5, pushing him into the OHL Playoff scoring lead with 23 points (8-15–23) through 11 games.

A 19-year-old native of Toronto, Ont., Johnston claimed the Eddie Powers Trophy as the OHL’s top scorer during the regular season, recording 124 points (46-78–124) over 68 games. He was also voted the Western Conference’s Most Outstanding Player and Most Sportsmanlike Player. Selected by Dallas with the 23rd overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, Johnston has recorded 58 goals, 96 assists and 154 points in 121 career regular season games. He was a member of Canada’s gold medal-winning National Under-18 Team in 2021. The Spitfires selected Johnston with their first round (6th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, North Bay Battalion forward Mitchell Russell put up eight points (3-5–8) in three games as the Troops advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship Series for the first time since 2015. Dallas Stars prospect Francesco Arcuri of the Kingston Frontenacs was also in the running with seven points (2-5–7) over three contests.

Bulldogs’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marco Costantini of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0 with a 0.99 goals-against average, .969 save percentage and one shutout to help the Bulldogs advance to the Eastern Conference Championship Series.

Costantini stopped 62 of the 64 shots that came his direction in Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final as the Bulldogs eliminated the Mississauga Steelheads in four straight games. He stopped all 35 shots he faced in Tuesday’s 3-0 road win in Game 3, earning first star honours. Costantini returned to the crease on Friday for Game 4, turning aside 27 of 29 as the Bulldogs earned their 18th consecutive win dating back to March 27.

A 19-year-old product of Hamilton, Costantini was voted the Eastern Conference’s Top Goaltender this past season with league-leading figures that include a 2.32 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and six shutouts. He played to a mark of 31-9-2-2 in 45 games, improving to 41-24-8-2 with a 3.15 goals-against average and .897 save percentage in his 79-game OHL regular season career. Costantini has played to a postseason record of 8-0 with a 1.87 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. He was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, back-to-back winner Luke Cavallin was steady for the Flint Firebirds once again, going 2-1 with a 1.91 goals-against average and .939 save percentage to help his team advance to the Western Conference Championship Series. Windsor’s Matt Onuska played to a 3-0 mark with a 2.33 goals-against average and .918 save percentage as the Spitfires are into the third round for the first time since 2011.

OHL ANNOUNCES 2021-22 REGULAR SEASON AWARD WINNERS

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced recipients of four of the league’s annual awards following the conclusion of the 2021-22 regular season.

Offensively, Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires captured the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the league’s leading scorer while Lucas Edmonds of the Kingston Frontenacs is the recipient of the Jim Mahon Trophy as the OHL’s top-scoring right winger. Recognizing defensive efforts, the Hamilton Bulldogs goaltending tandem of Marco Costantini and Matteo Drobac earns the Dave Pinkney Trophy, surrendering a league-low 176 goals against. North Bay Battalion rookie Dom DiVincentiis is the recipient of the F.W. “Dinty” Moore Trophy awarded to the rookie with the lowest goals-against average.

Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy (Top Scorer) – Wyatt Johnston, Windsor Spitfires
Dallas Stars prospect Wyatt Johnston is the recipient of the OHL Top Scorer Award presented by Kubota Canada, claiming the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy with 124 points including 46 goals and 78 assists in 68 games. Johnston boasted a plus-29 rating to go with a league-leading 1.82 point-per-game production rate. Johnston’s 124 points are the most by an OHL scoring leader since Erie’s Alex DeBrincat in 2016-17.

Johnston finished with 42 multi-point performances on the campaign including four different games with at least four points. His 124 points are the fifth-highest total in Spitfires franchise history, trailing Ernie Godden (153 points, 1980-81), Bill Bowler (135 points, 1994-95), Kelly Cain (133 points, 1987-88) and Blair Barnes (130 points (1979-80). He joins Taylor Hall (2009-10) and Peter Sarno (1997-98) as the third player in modern Spitfires franchise history to claim the honour. Earl Reibel (1949-50) and Bert Giesebrecht (1948-49) were also past Spitfires winners.

The 23rd overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars, Johnston has collected 58 goals, 96 assists and 154 points through 121 career regular season games with the Spitfires, who selected him with the sixth overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. He’ll be making his OHL playoff debut this week when the Spitfires open up their first round series against the Sarnia Sting.

The Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy was donated by the Toronto Marlboro Athletic Club in memory of Eddie Powers and was first awarded in 1945-46 to Tod Sloan of St. Michael’s who scored 79 points in 25 games. High-scoring Stars winger Jason Robertson was the 2018-19 recipient as a member of the Niagara IceDogs while veteran Dallas centreman Tyler Seguin has his named inscribed on the trophy as a member of the Plymouth Whalers in 2009-10.

Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy (Top Scoring Right Winger) – Lucas Edmonds, Kingston Frontenacs
Lucas Edmonds of the Kingston Frontenacs is the recipient of the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the league’s top scoring right winger. Edmonds finished third in OHL scoring with 113 points including 34 goals and a league-high 79 assists over 68 games in his first OHL season.

The 21-year-old originally from North Bay, Ont. turned heads this past season, leading the Frontenacs offensively with 30 different multi-point appearances including nine different instances with at least four points.

Edmonds joins David Ling (1994-95) as just the second Frontenacs player to ever claim the honour, finishing with the Kingston franchise’s sixth-highest assist total of 79. Edmonds’ 113 points are the most by a Frontenac since Ling put up 135 during the 1994-95 season.

Originally Kingston’s seventh round pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, Edmonds made the most of a rare first-year overage season and is eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft in July.

The Jim Mahon Trophy was first presented following the 1971-72 season by the players and management of the Peterborough Petes in memory of their right winger Jim Mahon who was accidentally killed that summer. Arthur Kaliyev of the Hamilton Bulldogs last received the honour in 2019-20 while other recent winners have included Justin Brazeau of the North Bay Battalion in 2019 and Jordan Kyrou of the Sarnia Sting in 2018.

Dave Pinkney Trophy (Lowest Team Goals Against) – Marco Costantini and Matteo Drobac, Hamilton Bulldogs
The Hamilton Bulldogs surrendered a league-low 176 goals over their 68-game schedule, backstopped by goaltenders Marco Costantini and Matteo Drobac who earn the Dave Pinkney Trophy in 2021-22.

Costantini and Drobac backstopped the Bulldogs to the club’s first Hamilton Spectator Trophy as OHL Regular Season champions as the club boasted an overall record of 51-12-3-2 for a franchise record 107 points.

Costantini led the league in goals-against average (2.32), save percentage (.917) and shutouts (6), establishing new Bulldogs single season records in those three categories while also playing to a mark of 31-9-2-2. Hamilton’s new career shutouts leader, Costantini ended the season with 17 consecutive wins dating back to February 16th. The 19-year-old hometown product was Hamilton’s fifth round pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

Drobac played to a record of 19-2-1-0, posting a 2.57 goals-against average and .905 save percentage with one shutout over 23 games in his first full OHL season. The Oakville, Ont. product was Hamilton’s sixth round pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

The Bulldogs also saw three appearances from rookie Tristan Malboeuf, who went 1-1, earning his first career OHL shutout on October 16th in Niagara.

This marks the first time the Bulldogs have earned the honour, but the Dave Pinkney Trophy has a prior history in Hamilton. Al Jensen of the 1977-78 Hamilton Fincups has his name inscribed on the trophy, as does the Hamilton Red Wings tandem of Jim Rutherford and Gerry Gray in 1967-68, Bud Blom in 1960-61 and Dennis Riggin of the Hamilton Tiger Cubs in 1953-54.

The Dave Pinkney Trophy is awarded annually to the goaltending tandem from the team that allows the fewest goals against during the regular season.

F.W. “Dinty” Moore Trophy (Best Rookie GAA): Dom DiVincentiis, North Bay Battalion
Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion is the recipient of the F.W. “Dinty” Moore Trophy, leading all rookie netminders with a 2.59 goals-against average.

An 18-year-old draft eligible goaltender from Bolton, Ont., DiVincentiis helped backstop the Battalion to a Central Division title, playing to a record of 14-8-0-1 with a .907 save percentage to accompany his 2.59 goals-against average. He was undefeated in regulation through his final eight starts of the season. DiVincentiis was North Bay’s sixth round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

DiVincentiis follows Matej Machovsky (2010-11) as the second Battalion goaltender to ever earn the distinction. He’s the third North Bay goaltender to do so, joining Scott Roche (1993-94) and Sandy Allan (1991-92) of the Centennials.

The trophy is named after F.W. “Dinty” Moore of Port Colborne, Ont., who served as OHA President from 1942-45. In order to qualify for this rookie award, a goaltender must play a minimum of 900 minutes. The most recent past recipient of the award was Brett Brochu of the London Knights in 2019-20.

Frontenacs’ Martin Chromiak Named OHL Player of the Week

Los Angeles Kings prospect Martin Chromiak of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Player of the Week, leading all players with six goals along with four assists for 10 points and a plus/minus rating of plus-7 over three games.

Chromiak put up at least three points in all three Kingston wins as the Fronts jumped ahead of the Mississauga Steelheads to seal up third place in the Eastern Conference standings. Chromiak started things off with his third hat trick of the season on Friday night as the Frontenacs overwhelmed the Barrie Colts 9-3. He’d tack on a highlight reel assist to earn first star honours, finishing with a plus/minus rating of plus-4. Chromiak continued his tear across the scoresheet on Saturday in Mississauga, scoring twice while adding an assist as the Frontenacs scored five third period goals to come back and defeat the Steelheads 7-5. He finished things off in Niagara on Sunday, extending his goal-scoring streak to eight games while adding two assists as the Frontenacs defeated the IceDogs 10-5.

A 19-year-old native of Ilava, Slovakia, Chromiak sits tied for third in OHL goal-scoring with 44 in his sophomore campaign. He’s tallied a total of 86 points (44-42–86) in 57 games and is one of five players in the Kingston lineup with at least 30 goals this season. Chromiak has represented his native Slovakia in two different World Junior Hockey Championship tournaments and was a fifth round (128th overall) selection by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft. He signed a three-year entry level NHL contract with the Kings on October 1, 2021. Chromiak was selected by the Frontenacs with the second overall pick of the 2019 CHL Import Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Frontenacs teammate Lucas Edmonds led the League with 11 points (3-8–11) in three games. Soo Greyhounds forward Tye Kartye helped his team skate to three straight wins, recording nine points (5-4–9) in the process.

Petes’ Michael Simpson Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a perfect 3-0 record with a 1.32 goals-against average, .954 save percentage and one shutout.

Simpson helped the Petes secure a spot in the OHL Playoffs, backstopping them to a pair of wins over Barrie along with another against Niagara. He stopped all 37 shots he faced on Tuesday night in Barrie, posting his first career OHL shutout as the Petes edged the Colts 1-0. Simpson was in fine form again on Saturday, making 20 saves as the Petes clinched a playoff spot in a 5-1 win over visiting Niagara. He turned aside an additional 26 shots on Sunday as Peterborough skated to a third straight victory, defeating Barrie 8-3 on home ice.

A 19-year-old from London, Ont., Simpson owns a record of 19-18-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average and .891 save percentage over 44 games in this, his first OHL season. The 6-foot, 188Ib. netminder was Peterborough’s 10th round (193rd overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Hamilton Bulldogs goaltender Marco Costantini went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average, .943 save percentage and one shutout for the League’s first place team. Veteran netminder Luke Cavallin of the Flint Firebirds also went 2-0, registering a 1.50 goals-against average and .942 save percentage.
