Hockey Canada

CALGARY, Alta. – Darren Rumble (Barrie, Ont./Moncton, QMJHL) returns to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence men’s under-18 program, this time as Team Canada’s head coach at the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship.

Rumble, an assistant coach with Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in 2015 and 2016, winning gold in his first appearance, will be assisted by Steve Hamilton (Edmonton/Edmonton, WHL) and Stéphane Julien (Shawinigan, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL).

Rounding out this year’s coaching staff are Jory Stuparyk (Vermilion, Alta./Edmonton, WHL) as video coach, and Fred Brathwaite (Ottawa/Hockey Canada) as goaltending consultant.

“The experience this coaching staff has with short tournaments like a world championship is important because the approach and preparation is completely different,” said Scott Salmond, vice-president of hockey operations and national teams. “We’ve had Darren working with our National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team for the past two years, and Steve has been part of the Under-17 program as a coach for Team Pacific. We’re confident that together with Stéphane, Jory, and Fred they will ensure that our players are ready to compete for gold next month in Slovakia.”

Rumble’s head-coaching experience spans two seasons with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals, and he just finished his fourth season with the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. In addition to his experience with Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, Rumble was an assistant coach at the 2013 IIHF World Championship, Division II with Iceland, winning bronze. His playing career included 193 NHL games with Ottawa, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Tampa Bay, as well as stints in the AHL and IHL. Rumble also played three seasons with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.

Hamilton coached at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, as both assistant coach then head coach for Team Pacific, and was tapped as assistant coach for the WHL All-Stars during Canada/Russia Series last fall. He joined the Edmonton Oil Kings as an assistant coach for the 2010-11 season following five seasons as general manager and head coach in the Alberta Junior Hockey League – with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders (2005-06) and Spruce Grove Saints (2006-10). Hamilton was promoted to head coach of the Oil Kings before the start of the 2014-15 season.

Julien joined the QMJHL’s Sherbrooke Phoenix as assistant coach for the 2012-13 season following his final season as a player in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany. He was promoted to head coach midway through the 2015-16 season. Julien’s playing career included five seasons in the QMJHL (1990-95) with Trois-Rivières and Sherbrooke, and 18 seasons of professional hockey in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland Austria. He won the Emile Bouchard Trophy as QMJHL defenceman of the year in 1994-95.

Hockey Canada’s director of player personnel, Ryan Jankowski, and the coaching staff will select Canada’s roster for the upcoming 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship. The roster will include players whose CHL teams either missed the playoffs or are no longer competing in the postseason.

Canada opens the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship on April 13 against Latvia; it will also play Finland, Slovakia and Switzerland in preliminary-round action. TSN, the official broadcast partner of Hockey Canada, is broadcasting 12 games, including all of Team Canada’s match-ups at the IIHF U18 World Championship.

Canada has won seven medals at the IIHF U18 World Championship, including three gold medals (2003, 2008, 2013).

CANADA’S NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM RETAINS COACHING, MANAGEMENT STAFF FOR 2017-18 SEASON

Press Release

Ducharme, Hunter, Knoblauch return behind bench, Bouchard in management

Hockey Canada

CALGARY, Alta. – A group of familiar faces will lead Canada’s National Junior Team into the 2017-18 season and the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.

Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence Policy Committee, comprised of Hockey Canada Board chairman Joe Drago (Sudbury, Ont.), Hockey Canada president and chief executive officer Tom Renney, Hockey Canada chief operating officer Scott Smith, OHL commissioner and CHL president David Branch, QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau and WHL commissioner Ron Robison, has announced that the entire coaching staff of Canada’s 2016-17 National Junior Team has been retained for the 2017-18 season, including the World Junior Championship. Joël Bouchard (Montreal/Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) will also continue as the Program of Excellence management group lead for Canada’s National Junior Team next season. Bouchard and Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations and national teams, confirmed that Dominique Ducharme (Joliette, Que./Drummondville, QMJHL) would be reprising his role behind the bench as head coach.

Ducharme is returning to Canada’s National Junior Team coaching staff for the third consecutive year, having acted as assistant coach in 2015-16 and head coach in 2016-17. Rounding out the coaching staff are returning assistant coaches, Tim Hunter (Calgary/Moose Jaw, WHL) and Kris Knoblauch (Regina/Erie, OHL).

The group helped lead Team Canada to a silver medal at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in January.

“This is a very unique opportunity to return an entire coaching staff that came within a shot of winning gold last year,” said Salmond. “The Program of Excellence Policy Committee unanimously agreed that it was in the best interest of the program to keep this coaching staff together and that their experience will provide us the best opportunity of winning gold in 2018.”

Bouchard has been a member of the POE management group since 2013. He has been president and general manager of the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada for the past six seasons, and took over as head coach in August 2014 after three seasons as an assistant coach. The Montreal native played 15 professional seasons, including parts of 11 seasons in the National Hockey League with eight teams. As a player, Bouchard made three appearances with Team Canada, winning gold each time.

Ducharme’s coaching experience with Hockey Canada also includes winning gold with Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. He is coming off his first season as head coach and general manager of the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL, a position he took after leaving the Halifax Mooseheads, who he led to their first-ever Memorial Cup championship in 2013. Ducharme played professionally from 1995 to 2002 in the ECHL, AHL, and in Europe.

Hunter won a bronze medal as head coach of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team at the 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship, and is in his third season as head coach of the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors. Before joining the Warriors, Hunter coached more than 1,000 games over 14 seasons in the NHL as an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, and San Jose Sharks. As a player he appeared in 815 NHL games over 16 seasons with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Sharks, and won the Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989.

Knoblauch has coached in the Canadian Hockey League since the 2006-07 season, spending his first six seasons in the WHL – first as an assistant coach with the Prince Albert Raiders, then in the same role with the Kootenay Ice until taking over as head coach in 2010. As head coach, Knoblauch led the Ice to their third WHL championship in 2011 and first Memorial Cup appearance since 2002. In 2012-13, Knoblauch was hired by the OHL’s Erie Otters as head coach where he has since been awarded the Matt Leyden Trophy as OHL coach of the year. Knoblauch was also head coach of Team Canada Red at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series Hosts

Press Release

Canada Russia

CHL and CIBC unveil new event logo

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with title partner CIBC, the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, today announced the six Canadian host cities for the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series to be played November 6-16.

The six-game series features regional league teams of Canadian National Junior Team candidates competing against the Russian National Junior Team and is an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.  The 2017 event will open with two games in the WHL, followed by two OHL matchups, and ending with a pair of contests hosted by the QMJHL.

Next season’s WHL hosts include Saskatchewan’s Moose Jaw Warriors and Swift Current Broncos for Game’s 1 and 2 respectively on Monday November 6 and Tuesday November 7.  When the series shifts to Ontario, the Owen Sound Attack will host Game 3 on Thursday November 9 followed by Game 4 in Sudbury, home of the Wolves, on Monday November 13.  The series wraps up out East with Game 5 hosted by the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders on Tuesday November 14, with the Game 6 series finale set for Thursday November 16 hosted by the Moncton Wildcats.

“For the 15th straight season CHL communities across our country will have the opportunity to experience the passion that only a Canada and Russia rivalry can produce,” said CHL President David Branch. “Our appreciation is extended to title partner CIBC for supporting this event that will showcase many of our league’s best players and future Canadian National Junior Team stars.”

Since the event first began in 2003, CHL teams have played to an overall record of 58-19-1-6.  The competitiveness of the rivalry has grown in recent years with four of the last seven series decided in the final game, and with Russia earning three series wins since 2010 compared to the CHL’s four series triumphs over the same period including last season by a 13-5 margin in points.

A total of 29 players from last season’s event competed in the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Toronto and Montreal including 15 CHL players on Team Canada who earned silver led by tournament MVP Thomas Chabot of the Saint John Sea Dogs, and 14 Russian players who captured bronze.

“As a Canadian company, we are so proud to bring the action of the CIBC Canada Russia Series rivalry to communities across the country through our partnership with the CHL,” said Stephen Forbes, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, CIBC. “This is a special year as we celebrate Canada and CIBC’s shared 150th birthday and we look forward to cheering on Team Canada and our next generation of hockey heroes as they showcase their talent in this anticipated annual showdown.”

Ahead of the 2017 series, CIBC and the CHL are excited to unveil a newly redesigned logo mark.  The league and bank collaborated closely to develop a more modern interpretation of the logo to symbolize a new era for the Series while embracing the historical rivalry between these two countries.

The 2017 event marks the first time the series will be played in Prince Edward Island while all five other cities have previously hosted games.  The event returns to Moncton for the first time since 2005 when the QMJHL emerged victorious by a 6-4 score.  Moose Jaw last hosted in 2011 with Team Russia winning the decisive Game 6 by a 7-5 score, while it’ll be nine years since the last time the rivalry was played in Swift Current back in 2008 with Team WHL earning a 5-0 win.  Owen Sound last hosted a 3-0 Team OHL shutout in 2015, while Sudbury will be hosting for a CHL record fourth time following games in 2007 (OHL won 4-2), 2010 (OHL won 2-1 in a shootout), and 2013 (Russia won 3-2 in a shootout).

The 2017 CIBC Canada Russia series is supported by CHL associate sponsors Cooper Tires, autoTRADER.ca, and Sherwin-Williams.  All games will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

In 2004, then 6-year old Dennis Gudbranson (youngest brother of OHL Alumni Erik & Alex Gudbranson) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Though chemotherapy forced the cancer into remission, it soon returned and he was in a battle for his life. After months of waiting and with only a one in 40,000 chance of finding a stem cell donor match, Dennis was able to find an adult match that would save his life. Dennis has been in remission for over ten years, in fact after five years in remission, he’s now considered to be cured. The Gudbranson family has been very proactive in raising money for Stem Cell Research annually, and the OHL Alumni Association couldn’t be happier to help out in their cause.

Regina Pats to Host 100th Celebration, 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup

Press Release

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced, on behalf of the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup Site Selection Committee, that the Regina Pats Hockey Club will host the historic 100th edition of the league’s prestigious national championship.

“The 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup and the celebrations around this centennial event will truly capture, preserve, and enhance the legacy of one of the most prestigious trophies in all of sport while honouring the brave men and women who served and continue to serve our country,” said CHL President David Branch. “I applaud our national Site Selection Committee who were challenged with the decision of choosing between three outstanding bids.  On behalf of the CHL we look forward to working with the City of Regina and the Regina Pats to engage the entire nation in what will truly be a historic event.”

The decision was rendered following formal bid presentations made by the Pats, along with the Hamilton Bulldogs and Oshawa Generals, on January 25, 2017, to the national Site Selection Committee.  The committee is comprised of industry leaders from across Canada including Michael Akpata (Retired Canadian Armed Forces, 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup Host Organizing Committee), Paul Beeston (Former President & CEO, Toronto Blue Jays), Colin Campbell (Senior Executive Vice-President of Hockey Operations, NHL), Al Coates (Interim Director, Hockey Canada Foundation), Serge Fortin (Vice-President, TVA Sports), Scott Moore (President, Sportsnet and NHL Properties), and Scott Smith (Chief Operating Officer, Hockey Canada).

The announcement was delivered before a national audience as part of Sportsnet’s Hockey Day in Canada coverage.

The 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup will take place May 17-27, 2018, at Regina’s Brandt Centre, featuring the host Pats along with the champions of the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League competing in the traditional round-robin tournament format.

“Our local team worked hard to put together a great bid, and we are extremely excited, and honoured, to be able to host the 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup,” says Shaun Semple, President and CEO of the Brandt Group of Companies and Chair of Regina’s Host Organizing Committee. “We’ve got some great ideas and plans, and we look forward to the opportunity to engage with junior hockey fans across the country, as we celebrate this historic centennial year.”

The prestigious national championship returns to the city of Regina for the first time since 2001, an event that featured the host Pats, the Ottawa 67’s (OHL), and champion Red Deer Rebels (WHL) defeating the Val-d’Or Foreurs (QMJHL) 6-5 in overtime.  Regina also hosted the 1980 event with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Named for the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the WHL’s Pats are the CHL’s oldest franchise beginning operations in 1917, and celebrating their 100th anniversary next season.  The club has competed in a record 12 Memorial Cup Championship games including the inaugural final back in 1919 before winning major junior hockey’s prize three times in 1925, 1930, and 1974.

“On behalf of Mastercard Canada, title sponsor for the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup, I’d like to congratulate the City of Regina and the Regina Pats on a successful bid,” said Milos Vranesevic, Vice-President and Head of Marketing, Mastercard Canada. “We are proud of our longstanding partnership with the Canadian Hockey League and our association with this prestigious national championship since 1999 and look forward to the centennial celebration at the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup.”

The Memorial Cup has a rich tradition that has shaped the way junior hockey is played in North America. The trophy was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919, in remembrance of the many soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for Canada in the First World War.  In 2010 the Memorial Cup was rededicated to the memory of all fallen Canadian Military Personnel killed in combat serving our country.

The 99th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup will be hosted by the Windsor Spitfires May 18-28, 2017, with all nine games to be broadcast live across Canada on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide. Players on all 20 OHL teams have received mental health training specific to suicide awareness called safeTALK. This training helps teach individuals the importance of talking about mental health, how to acknowledge signs of suicide, seek help when they’re in need of support, and connect others in need of support to suicide first aid resources.

Since its inception, Talk Today has made a sizable impact in the OHL with over 725 players, 204 billets, and more than 85 coaches and front office staff receiving mental health and suicide prevention training to date.  The partnership has expanded to include a mental health awareness seminar as part of the OHL/OHF Under-15 Program of Excellence since April, 2015, and new this season includes partnerships with all 60 teams across the Canadian Hockey League.

In conjunction with Teachers Life, OHL clubs have also been active this season incorporating the topic of mental health into their in-school visit programs working alongside their local CMHA Ontario Branches.  Players have already been visiting select elementary schools throughout the season communicating personal messages about managing stress.

Talk Today is a mandatory program that works in conjunction with the OHL’s other league programs in areas such as drug awareness, health and safety education, respect for women, and has become an important piece of the league’s ‘Players First’ guide.

For more information about upcoming OHL and CMHA game nights please contact OHL clubs or the local CMHA Ontario Branch.
