Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month – Michael DiPietro (Windsor Spitfires):

He started the month with a 36-save performance on December 3rd as the Spitfires claimed a 2-1 win over the Flint Firebirds. OHL Draft Eligible Player of the Month for December

December was one of the toughest months I’ve ever had coming up with the top performer among the Ontario Hockey League’s draft eligible players as there were literally a hand full of performances that, if you picked one over another you couldn’t go wrong.

With that out of the way, I’ve decided to go with Windsor Spitfires’ goaltender Michael DiPietro.

DiPietro started eight games during the month and came in in relief in the final game of 2016 with just 3 minutes remaining. He posted a 6-2-0-0 record with a jaw dropping 1.50 goals against average and .940 save percentage.

DiPietro posted three consecutive shutouts with a shutout streak that lasted 202 minutes and 57 seconds. Thus, he was named the OHL Player of the Week and the Canadian Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Week.

The scale tipped in DiPietro’s favor because he kept the Spitfires within striking distance of the Soo Greyhounds for top spot in the Central Division despite missing top scorers Logan Brown and Gabriel Vilardi for almost the entire month.

Also considered were Mississauga Steelheads’ teammates, forward Owen Tippett (11 goals, 6 assists in 12 games), and defenceman Nicolas Hague (5 goals, 8 assists in 12 games) as well as Soo Greyhounds defenceman Conor Timmins (3 goals, 9 assists in 10 games), and a pair of Owen Sound Attack forwards, Nick Suzuki (5 goals, 10 assists in 9 games) and Jonah Gadjovich (9 goals, 5 assists in 9 games).

November – Nick Suzuki, Owen Sound Attack

OHL’s Draft Eligible Statistical Leaders as Of December

Happy New Year!

As we enter the New Year, December has come to a close and we’ll look at the Ontario Hockey League’s statistical leaders among players eligible for the 2017 National Hockey League Draft.

While there are players that are still eligible, since they were passed over in 2016, we did not include them. The list is entirely of players eligible for the first time.

Nick Suzuki (Owen Sound Attack) and Owen Tippett (Mississauga Steelheads) have opened up a lead in the points race over third place Morgan Frost (Soo Greyhounds). Suzuki leads the way with 47 points followed closely by Tippett with 45 points. Frost sits 11 points back of the leader with 36 points. Tippett has an over whelming lead in the goal scoring department with 29, 9 more than Suzuki.

The top two defenceman leading in the scoring race among rearguards have also opened up a bit of a gap. Conor Timmins (Soo Greyhounds) leads defenders with 34 points. He has a 4 point lead over Nicolas Hague (Mississauga Steelheads). There is a 10 point gap between Hague and Noel Hoefenmayer (Ottawa 67’s), who comes in third with 20 points.

Michael DiPietro (Windsor Spitfires) leads in all goaltending categories including shutouts (4) that lead the entire league.

We’ve added some categories this month: longest goal scoring streak, longest assist streak, longest point streak, shot attempts and shots on goal to name a few.

Players with an asterisk (*) also lead the league in that category.

While we take great care in the stat keeping, please refer to the OHL website for official stats.   Goaltenders ranked are minimum 4 games played.

OHL Draft:  Round 2, 23rd overall, 2015 OHL Priority Selection

I’m not usually a fan of goaltenders being drafted in the first round but every once in a while a prospect comes along that you have to give it serious consideration. Malcolm Subban was the last Ontario Hockey League goaltender selected in the first round of the National Hockey League Draft (24th overall in 2012 by the Boston Bruins), and setting aside hindsight, an argument can be made whether it was the correct choice or not.

Michael DiPietro of the Windsor Spitfires will rightfully garner attention as a first rounder in 2017.

DiPietro played his midget hockey for the Sun County Panthers where he posted a 2.12 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. He also led Team Ontario Under-16’s to a gold medal at the Canada Winter Games with a 0.75 goals against average and a .970 save percentage. That set the stage for Spitfires’ General Manager Warren Rychel to select him in the second round of the OHL Draft.

DiPietro made an immediate impact in the OHL in his rookie season 16-8-1-1 record with a 2.45 goals against average and .912 save percentage. He won the Dinty Moore Trophy for having the best rookie goals against average and was named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team at the end of the season.

DiPietro also played for Team Canada at the World Hockey Challenge Under-17’s where he posted the tournaments best goals against average at 1.75 and in those five games had a save percentage of .929. He was also a standout for Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial. In 3 appearances he posted a 2.00 goals against average as well as a .920 save percentage.

This season, DiPietro is taking the next step ranking near the top of the league in both goals against average and save percentage.

DiPietro lacks the size that NHL teams seem to covet when it comes to goaltenders nowadays. But what he lacks in size, he makes up with talent.

DiPietro is very agile and athletic. His side to side movement is very quick as is his ability to get into position. He plays a composed game and tracks the puck extremely well. His reflexes are excellent and trusts his abilities. He’s very good in close and remains calm in those situations. His positioning is excellent especially with shots coming through traffic. He is so positionally sound that the puck just hits him through that traffic, or if deflected, can get a pad or glove on it.

If there was one area that DiPietro needed to work on it is his rebound control. From last season to now, he has improved in that area of his game, but it continues to be a work in progress.

As hosts of the 2017 Memorial Cup, the Windsor Spitfires will be playing into May and there will be a lot of eyes on DiPietro. If you are a gambler, don’t bet against him.

OHL’s Draft Eligible Player of the Month for October is Gabriel Vilardi

Well it is November 1st and every month of the Ontario Hockey League season is the time I select my player of the month eligible for the National Hockey League Draft. For October there was no easy choice as there were several worthy candidates. In the end, I settles on Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires.

The OHL season began with Vilardi injured but he made his anticipated return showing no rust and on fire. In just 9 games through October, Vilardi scored 6 goals and 8 assists and finishing with a plus 5. His six goals came on twenty five shots, good for a 24 per cent shooting percentage.

In his nine games, Vilardi was named the game’s first star three times. He’s climbed up the Spitfires’ scoring chart and sits tied for second with his fourteen points which is tied for fifth among draft eligible players.

Also garnering attention is Mississauga Steelheads’ star Owen Tippet who leads the Steelheads (and tied for tops among draft eligible players) in scoring. In eleven October games Tippett registered twelve goals and four assists.

Two defencemen drew plenty of attention as well. Tippett’s teammate Nicolas Hague had 7 goals and 4 assists in 10 games while Noel Hoefenmayer of the Ottawa 67’s had 4 goals and 8 assists in 12 games.

In goal, Michael DiPietro posted a 5-2-0-0 record with a 2.25 goals against average and .924 save percentage with one shutout.

OHL’s Draft Eligible Statistical Leaders

It is November 1st and that means the Ontario Hockey League’s first full month of the season is now in the books. While the month ended on Halloween, there are no disguises, but a few surprises.

While we look at the League’s statistical leaders in various categories, remember we look at first time draft eligible players only. Those passed over in previous drafts are not included. For example, Oshawa Generals’ Domenic Commisso sits 18th in scoring with 18 points in 15 games, but because he was passed over at the 2016 National Hockey League Draft, he is not included here but is still eligible for the 2017 Draft.

Owen Tippett of the Mississauga Steelheads and Austen Keating of the Ottawa 67’s lead the scoring race with 18 points apiece. Right behind them sits Matthew Strome of the Hamilton Bulldogs with 17 points. However, it’s Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires, who began the season injured, leads in points per game with 1.56. Vilardi, considered the top prospect from the OHL has 14 points in just 9 games.

Another Ottawa 67 leads defencemen in scoring. Noel Hoefenmayer leads the way with 14 points in 15 games. And right there with him is another Mississauga Steelhead in Nicolas Hague with 13 points in 13 games. Adam Thilander of the North Bay Battalion comes in third with 10 points in 15 games.

In goal, Windsor Spitfires’ Michael DiPietro leads in both goals against average and save percentage. His 2.10 GAA and .926 save percentage rank second and third respectively overall in the OHL.

2017 OHL’s Draft Eligible Players by Team

Opening week of the Ontario Hockey League season has begun and here you’ll find all the players eligible for the first time for the 2017 National Hockey League Draft.

While there are some top notch players that will have their name’s called in June, It’s not a particularly strong or deep draft class from the O.

On the high end, there is Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires, Owen Tippet and Nicolas Hague of the Mississauga Steelheads and Matthew Strome of the Hamilton Bulldogs to name a few. Standout goaltender Michael DiPietro of the Spitfires has the makeup to push for first round consideration as a goalie.

As for my season prediction, I like Hamilton versus Mississauga in the Eastern Final and London versus Windsor in the Western Final with London defeating Mississauga for the OHL Championship.

Canada Announces Roster for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament

Hockey Canada announced the 22 man roster that will go for a ninth straight gold medal at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial set to begin August 8 and run thru to August 13, 2016.

The Ontario Hockey League is well represented, making up half the roster led by Windsor Spitfires goaltender Michael DiPietro. To no surprise from this writer, three players not eligible until the 2018 National Hockey League Draft made the final cut. They are: London Knights’ defenceman Evan Bouchard, Mississauga Steelheads’ forward Ryan McLeod and from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Joseph Veleno of the Saint John Sea Dogs
