Spitfires’ Ilya Protas Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Washington Capitals prospect Ilya Protas of the Windsor Spitfires is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, nine assists and 14 points over four contests.

Protas opened the week with a goal and an assist on Monday as the Spitfires secured a 4-1 Family Day win over the Owen Sound Attack. He added two goals and two assists on Friday in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Sarnia Sting. The 6-foot-5, 200lb. forward tallied three assists on Saturday in a 5-4 loss to the Flint Firebirds. Protas capped off the week with a five-point performance on Sunday, recording two goals and three assists to earn first star honours in a 7-3 win over the Saginaw Spirit. Protas reached the 40-goal mark to become the highest goal-scoring import player in Spitfires franchise history.

The 18-year-old from Vitebsk, Belarus, has appeared in 52 games with the Spitfires this season, recording 41 goals, 57 assists, and 98 points. Protas ranks fourth in OHL scoring and third in goals. He was selected third overall by Windsor in the 2024 CHL Import Draft after being chosen in the third round (75th overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis of the Brantford Bulldogs posted seven goals and five assists in four games played. Protas’ Spitfires teammate Ryan Abraham was also a standout, tallying five goals and five assists in three outings.

Battalion’s Mike McIvor Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Mike McIvor of the North Bay Battalion is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 3-0 along with a 1.32 goals-against average and .956 save percentage.

Turning aside an impressive 108 shots last week, McIvor started with a 3-2 Family Day victory over the Ottawa 67’s on Monday, making 22 saves. He provided relief on Thursday, stopping 22 of 23 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Saginaw Spirit. The 6-foot-1, 174lbs. netminder returned to the crease Friday, making 31 saves to earn first-star honours in a 4-1 win over the Flint Firebirds. McIvor closed out the week with a 5-1 victory against the Sarnia Sting, turning aside 33 of 34 shots on the road on Sunday.

An 18-year-old from Warkworth, Ont., McIvor holds a 17-14-2-0 record this season, including two shutouts, with a 2.82 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage over 36 games. A former fourth round pick (83rd overall) by the Battalion in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, he is in his second full OHL season, boasting a career record of 25-25-2-0 with a 3.12 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage, and three shutouts in 56 regular-season games. McIvor was recently ranked 22nd among North American goaltenders on the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings.

Also considered for the award this week, Los Angeles Kings prospect Carter George of the Owen Sound Attack went 2-1 with a 2.30 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, while Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals was also a standout in the crease, going 2-0-1-0 along with a 1.68 goals-against average and .943 save percentage.

Attack’s Cole Zurawski Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Owen Sound Attack forward Cole Zurawski is the OHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, recording three goals and two assists over four contests.

Zurawski opened the week with an assist on Monday in Owen Sound’s 4-1 loss to the Windsor Spitfires. He found the scoresheet again Thursday, recording a goal and an assist to earn second star honours in a 5-1 win over the Barrie Colts. The 6-foot, 181lb. right-winger added another goal Friday in an 8-1 loss to the Sudbury Wolves. Zurawski capped off Owen Sound’s week on the road with the overtime winner in Sunday’s 4-3 road win over the Soo Greyhounds.

A 17-year-old from Barrie, Ont., Zurawski has recorded 15 points (6-9-15) in 32 games this season between the Owen Sound Attack and Flint Firebirds. Selected by Flint with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, he was traded to Owen Sound on January 8, 2025, in exchange for Sam McCue and draft picks. Zurawski also represented Team Canada White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, winning gold this past November.

Also considered for the award this week, Soo Greyhounds blueliner Chase Reid recorded six points (2-4–6) in three games while Guelph Storm forward Lev Katzin (1-4–5) and Sudbury Wolves forward Hudson Chitaroni (0-5–5) each produced five points.

CHERNYSHOV, LEENDERS AND MBUYI NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Spirit’s Igor Chernyshov Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

San Jose Sharks prospect Igor Chernyshov of the Saginaw Spirit is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, five assists and 10 points over three contests.

Chernyshov opened the week with a pair of goals and an assist on Wednesday to earn first star honours in a 6-3 win over the Windsor Spitfires. He followed up with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 loss to the Brantford Bulldogs on Friday, earning third star honours. Chernyshov delivered a dominant five-point outing on Saturday, registering a pair of goals and three assists to earn first star honours in a high-scoring 10-7 win against the Guelph Storm.

The 19-year-old from Penza, Russia overcame offseason shoulder surgery and has appeared in five games with the Spirit this season, tallying eight goals, six assists and 14 points. He was Saginaw’s first round (56th overall) pick in the the 2024 CHL Import Draft. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 225lb., Chernyshov was selected in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

Also considered for the award this week, Spirit teammate and top 2025 NHL Draft-eligible prospect Michael Misa posted four goals and seven assists. Another top 2025 NHL Draft prospect, Porter Martone of the Brampton Steelheads, stood out with nine points (3-6-9) in two games.

Bulldogs’ Ryerson Leenders Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Buffalo Sabres prospect Ryerson Leenders of the Brantford Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season, going 2-0-1-0 along with a 1.98 goals-against average, and a .944 save percentage.

Turning aside an impressive 101 shots last week, Leenders made 37 of those stops in a 2-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves on Wednesday to earn first star honours. He returned to the crease on Friday, making 31 saves in a 4-2 win against the Saginaw Spirit. Leenders wrapped up the week on Saturday, turning aside 34 of 37 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Windsor Spitfires.

An 18-year-old from Nanticoke, Ont., Leenders is 19-11-3-0 on the season, with a 3.20 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in 33 games played. The former second-round (32nd overall) pick by Mississauga in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection is now in his third OHL season, owning a career mark of 55-43-10-0 with a 3.25 goals-against average, .900 save percentage and three shutouts over 114 regular season games. Leenders was selected in the seventh round (202nd overall) by Buffalo at the 2024 NHL Draft last summer.

Also considered for the award this week, Brampton Steelheads netminder Jack Ivankovic went 2-0-0-0 including a shutout with a 1.50 goals-against average and .944 save percentage, while Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals was also a standout in the crease, going 3-0-0-0 including a shutout, along with a 1.00 goals-against average and .948 save percentage.

Attack’s Pierce Mbuyi Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Owen Sound Attack forward Pierce Mbuyi is the OHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, recording three goals and assists over three contests.

Mbuyi kicked off the week with his second hat-trick of the season on Friday, scoring it in a span of seven-and-a-half minutes in the first period in the Attack’s 4-3 loss to Kitchener. He claimed second star recognition again on Saturday with two primary assists in a 4-1 win over North Bay. The 5-foot-10, 153lb. forward capped the week with another assist on Sunday as Owen Sound fell 4-2 to the Kingston Frontenacs.

A 16-year-old left-winger from Mississauga, Ont., Mbuyi leads OHL rookies with 20 goals as part of a total of 33 points through 46 games. The Attack selected Mbuyi with their first round (7th overall) pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA program.

Also considered for the award this week, Carson Harmer of the Saginaw Spirit and Lev Katzin of the Guelph Storm each recorded four points (2-2–4).

Wolves’ Kocha Delic Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Sudbury Wolves overage forward Kocha Delic is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, three assists and eight points in three contests last week.

Delic opened the week with a four-point performance on Thursday, recording a hat-trick and an assist to earn first star honours in a 7-1 win over the Soo Greyhounds. He continued his strong play on Friday, scoring a goal in a 5-4 loss to the Niagara IceDogs. Delic wrapped up the week with a goal and two assists on Sunday, helping the Wolves secure a high-scoring 10-6 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs.

A 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., Delic has recorded 49 points (20-29–49) in 37 games this season, securing the third consecutive 20+ goal season of his career. Selected by Sudbury in the second round (28th overall) of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the 5-foot-11, 198lb. centreman has amassed 211 points (89-122–211) over 205 career regular-season games across four seasons with the Wolves.

Also considered for the award this week, Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights recorded seven points (3-4-7) in a pair of wins. Top 2025 NHL Draft-eligible prospect Porter Martone of the Brampton Steelheads was also a standout, tallying a goal, six assists and seven points in three games played.

Petes’ Easton Rye Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Easton Rye of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0-0-1 with a 2.91 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in three outings.

Making 92 saves last week, Rye stopped 23 of 25 shots on Thursday, backstopping the Petes to a 5-2 win over the Barrie Colts. He returned to the crease on Saturday, making 39 saves and stopping two shootout attempts in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Brantford Bulldogs. Rye wrapped up the week with a 30-save performance on Sunday, helping Peterborough secure a 5-2 victory against the Niagara IceDogs.

The 18-year-old hometown product has appeared in 16 games for the Petes this season, posting a 7-7-1-1 record with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. Over two OHL seasons, Rye has played in 25 games, compiling an 8-11-1-1 record with a 4.03 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage. The 6-foot, 196lb. netminder was selected by Peterborough in the fifth round (89th overall) of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection and spent the majority of 2023-24 with the PJCHL’s Lakefield Chiefs.

Also considered for the award this week, Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals was excellent, going 2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Storm’s Lev Katzin Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Guelph Storm forward Lev Katzin is the OHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, recording one goal, five assists and six points over three games played.

Katzin kicked off the week with an assist on Wednesday as the Storm came up short in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Erie Otters. He added two more assists on Friday, contributing to the Storm’s 6-4 victory over the Flint Firebirds. The 5-foot-8, 176lb. forward capped off the week with a standout performance on Saturday, tallying a goal and two assists to earn first star honours in a 4-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds.

A 17-year-old forward from Thornhill, Ont., Katzin joined the Storm in late November after spending two seasons with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, where he recorded 39 points (12-27–39) in 66 games. In his first 16 games with the Storm, Katzin has tallied seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points, leading all OHL rookies with 1.5 points-per-game. He was part of the gold medal-winning Team Canada White at the 2023 U17 World Hockey Challenge in Prince Edward Island. During his OHL draft year, Katzin excelled with the GTHL’s Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA program and was selected by the Storm in the fifth round (94th overall).

Also considered for the award this week, Chase Reid of the Soo Greyhounds contributed five assists in three contests, while Katzin’s Storm teammate Daniil Skvortsov tallied a goal and three helpers from the back end.

OHL ANNOUNCES TOP PERFORMERS OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Month for December 2024.


Player of the Month – Beckett Sennecke (Oshawa Generals)

Anaheim Ducks prospect Beckett Sennecke of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Month for December after recording nine goals, 13 assists, and 22 points in just eight games, along with a plus-4 rating. Currently ranking fifth among OHL goal-scorers this season, Sennecke leads the Generals with 52 points (24-28-52) in 31 games. The soon-to-be 19-year-old had a stellar December, highlighted by a career-high six-point performance on December 1 and a five-point effort on December 4. Sennecke registered multi-point outings in seven of his eight games during the month.

A native of Toronto, Ont., Sennecke was formerly selected eighth overall by the Generals in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. The 6-foot-4, 195Ib. right-wing has recorded 175 points (71-104–175) over 155 career regular season contests in Oshawa. He put up 22 points (10-12–22) over 16 games in last year’s playoffs as the Generals were crowned Eastern Conference champions. Sennecke was selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the third overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this month, Winnipeg Jets prospect Kieron Walton of the Sudbury Wolves put up 19 points (5-14–19) over eight contests.


Defenceman of the Month – Henry Mews (Ottawa 67’s)

Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews of the Ottawa 67’s has been named OHL Defenceman of the Month for December, leading all blueliners with four goals, 16 assists and 20 points over 11 games. The 6-foot-1, 183lb. defenceman recorded points in 10 of his 11 December contests with the 67’s, highlighted by six multi-point efforts, including a four-assist performance on December 14. Mews currently leads all OHL defencemen in scoring this season with 48 points (11-37-48) in 34 games.

An 18-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Mews has amassed 140 points (38-102-140) in 154 career OHL regular season games since being selected seventh overall by the 67’s in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. He has also contributed nine points (3-6-9) in 21 playoff games. Drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round (74th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft, Mews has also achieved international success, winning gold with Canada at both the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the U18 World Junior Championship.


Goaltender of the Month – Ben Hrebik (Barrie Colts)

Barrie Colts goaltender Ben Hrebik has been named the OHL Goaltender of the Month for December. Making 282 saves throughout the month, Hrebik posted a 6-1-0-1 record, a 2.13 goals-against average, .943 save percentage, and a shutout. The 6-foot-3, 199lb. netminder excelled in December, recording 30+ saves in six games, highlighted by a 45-save shutout on December 18 against Owen Sound. Hrebik also earned OHL Goaltender of the Week honours during the month.

The 18-year-old from Milton, Ont. has appeared in 16 games with the Colts this season, posting a 12-2-1-0 record, along with a league-best 2.09 goals-against average and .939 save percentage. Hrebik was selected by Barrie in the ninth round (173rd overall) of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, and spent last season with the OJHL’s Burlington Cougars.

Also considered for the award this month, Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers was impressive, compiling a 8-1-0-0 record with a 2.06 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and one shutout. Austin Elliott of the London Knights was also dominant, playing to a perfect 5-0-0-0 record along with a 1.60 goals-against average, a .944 save percentage, and one shutout.


Rookie of the Month – Lev Katzin (Guelph Storm)

Guelph Storm forward Lev Katzin has been named the OHL Rookie of the Month for December, registering 15 points including five goals and 10 assists over 10 games. Katzin sits tied for fourth in team scoring despite playing in just 10 of the Storm’s 34 games so far this season. He delivered standout performances in December with two three-point efforts on December 8 and 13, each featuring a goal and two assists. His efforts also earned him OHL Rookie of the Week honours during the month.

IceDogs’ Ryan Roobroeck Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Ryan Roobroeck of the Niagara IceDogs is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering four goals, five assists and nine points over three road wins.

Roobroeck helped the IceDogs go a perfect 3-0 in northern Ontario, starting off the week with a career-high five-point performance, recording a hat trick and two assists in a 7-3 win over the North Bay Battalion to earn first star honours on Thursday. Roobroeck’s natural hat-trick scored in a span of 5:12 established a new IceDogs franchise mark for the fastest three goals by one player. He contributed again on Friday, adding an assist in an 8-4 victory over the Soo Greyhounds. Roobroeck capped off the weekend with a goal and two assists on Sunday to earn third star honours, helping secure a 6-3 win against the Sudbury Wolves.

A 17-year-old from London, Ont., Roobroeck has tallied a club-leading 47 points (24-23-47) in 31 games this season. Selected second overall by Niagara in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, the 6-foot-4, 190lb. left-winger has recorded 98 points (52-46–98) in 94 career regular season games. Roobroeck was named to the 2023-24 OHL First All-Rookie team after recording 51 points (28-23-51) in 63 games played with the IceDogs last season. He will be eligible for the NHL Draft in 2026.

Also given consideration for the award this week, IceDogs teammate Ethan Czata also registered nine points (5-4-9) in the three victories, while Winnipeg Jets prospect Kieron Walton of the Sudbury Wolves recorded two goals, six assists and eight points in three games played.

Bulldogs’ Ryerson Leenders Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Buffalo Sabres prospect Ryerson Leenders of the Brantford Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 3-0-0-0 along with a 2.27 goals-against average, and a .931 save percentage.

Turning aside 94 shots last week, Leenders made 30 of those stops in a 6-5 overtime win against the Brampton Steelheads on Wednesday. He returned to the crease on Friday, making 31 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Barrie Colts, earning first-star honours. Leenders wrapped up the week in dominant fashion on Sunday, turning aside 33 of 34 shots in a commanding 10-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs.

An 18-year-old from Nanticoke, Ont., Leenders is 8-8-1-0 on the season, with a 3.47 goals-against average and .900 save percentage in 17 games played. The former second-round (32nd overall) pick by Mississauga in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection is now in his third OHL season, owning a career mark of 44-40-8-0 with a 3.31 goals-against average, .898 save percentage and three shutouts over 98 regular season games. Leenders was selected in the seventh round (202nd overall) by Buffalo at the 2024 NHL Draft this past summer.

Also considered for the award this week, London Knights netminder Austin Elliott went 2-0-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .929 save percentage to improve to 13-0 on the season, while Edmonton Oilers prospect Nathan Day of the Flint Firebirds was also a standout in the crease, going 2-0-0-0 including a shutout, along with a 1.95 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.

Sting’s Liam Beamish Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Sarnia Sting forward Liam Beamish is the OHL Rookie of the Week, recording four goals, three assists and seven points over three contests.

Beamish earned first star recognition in three straight contests. He started the week with two goals on Wednesday, helping the Sting earn a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Flint Firebirds. On Friday, he tallied a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory over the Owen Sound Attack. Beamish wrapped up the weekend scoring a goal and adding two assists in a 6-3 win against the Soo Greyhounds on Sunday.

A 17-year-old forward from Beamsville, Ont., Beamish joined the Sting in late November after starting off the season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL where he recorded eighth points (4-4-8) in 20 games played. The 5-foot-11, 179lb. centreman spent last season in the GOJHL playing for the Fort Erie Meteors and was also named GOJHL (Golden Horseshoe) Rookie of the Year. Beamish was selected by the Sting in the eighth round (151st overall) of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Lev Katzin of the Guelph Storm contributed three goals and four assists in three contests, while goaltender Jaeden Nelson of the Ottawa 67’s played to a 2-0-0-0 record along with a 2.49 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.

Generals’ Beckett Sennecke Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Anaheim Ducks prospect Beckett Sennecke of the Oshawa Generals is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering two goals, six assists and eight points over three games played.

Sennecke’s outstanding performance earned him an invitation to Canada’s National Junior Team Development Camp. He got the week started with a goal and four assists, earning second star honours in Wednesday’s 8-4 win over the Ottawa 67’s. On Friday, he added a goal and two assists, claiming first star honours in a 5-3 win against London as the Generals ended the Knights’ 19-game winning streak. Sennecke’s goal on Friday was a goal of the year candidate, seen on highlight reels far and wide.

An 18-year-old from Toronto, Ont., Sennecke has tallied 44 points (21-23-44) in 26 games this season. Selected eighth overall by Oshawa in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, the 6-foot-4, 195lbb. right-winger has recorded 167 points (68-99–167) in 150 career regular season games. He registered 22 points (10-12–22) in 16 playoff games last year, helping the Generals capture the Eastern Conference championship. Sennecke was selected third overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2024 NHL Draft. He heads to Ottawa in a bid to make Canada’s National Junior Team when camp gets underway this week.

Also given consideration for the award this week, 2025 NHL Draft-eligible prospect Michael Misa of the Saginaw Spirit registered six points (2-4-6) in two games played. Washington Capitals prospect Ilya Protas of the Windsor Spitfires was also a standout, tallying three goals, two assists and five points in two contests.

Rangers’ Jackson Parsons Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the third time this season, going 3-0-0-0 including a shutout, along with a 1.62 goals-against average, and a .943 save percentage.

Turning aside 83 shots last week, Parsons made 23 saves in Tuesday’s 6-3 win over the Brantford Bulldogs. He followed that up on Friday with a 27-save shutout performance, earning first star honours in a 3-0 victory over the Soo Greyhounds. Parsons capped off the week with a 3-2 shootout win over the Windsor Spitfires on Saturday, making 33 saves and three shootout denials to secure second star honours and extend the Rangers’ winning streak to six games.

A  20-year-old from Embrun, Ont., Parsons is 17-5-1-0 on the season, leading all OHL netminders with a 2.05 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and four shutouts over 23 games played. The former third-round (53rd overall) pick by Kitchener in 2020 is now in his fourth OHL season, owning a career mark of 54-37-5-0 with a 3.03 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and eight shutouts over 101 regular season games. Parsons is committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Clarkson University next season.

Also considered for the award this week, Detroit Red Wings prospect Landon Miller of the Soo Greyhounds was excellent, going 1-1-0-0 including a shutout with a 1.00 goals-against average and .976 save percentage, while Ben Hrebik of the Barrie Colts was also a standout in the crease, going 2-0-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .953 save percentage.
