Cam Dineen – Player Profile – North Bay Battalion

Height:  5’11”

Weight:  182 pounds

Date of birth: June 19, 1998, Toms River, NJ

Position:  Defence

Shoots:  Left

OHL Draft:  Round 11, 214th overall, 2014 OHL Priority Selection

Don’t be deceived by the low draft pick in the OHL draft.

Dineen received a scholarship from Yale University and in November of 2013 had a verbal agreement to join them for the 2016-2017 season. With that commitment, OHL teams were doubtful whether Dineen would commit to the OHL and thus the low pick. By comparison, in 2014 he was a first round pick, 3rd overall in the USHL Futures Draft.

With his commitment to the Battalion, Dineen relinquished his NCAA eligibility.

Last season, Dineen played for the New Jersey Rockets of the Eastern Hockey League. There, he scored 11 goals and added 30 assists in 39 games and was named the EHL Rookie of the Year, led all defencemen in scoring and was named an all star. He also appeared in 3 games for Tri-City Storm of the USHL. He was a member of Team USA at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament contributing 2 assists in 4 games.

Dineen, in an interview on the Rocket’s web site had this to say about his signing with the Battalion:

“It was a hard decision to make because of my commitment and opportunities with Yale and Tri-City. But I truly believe the OHL, and North Bay, is where I need to be. It was the right decision for me, considering the competition and style of play.”

Just past the halfway mark of this his rookie OHL season, Dineen leads all defencemen in points on 6 goals and 27 assists in 37 games. Earlier this month, I named him draft eligible player of the month for December.  A few days later, he was named OHL rookie of the month and OHL defenceman of the month for December. He’s also tied for second with Max Jones for points by a rookie, trailing only Alexander Nylander.

Once he appeared at the North Bay Battalion prospect’s camp, Dineen knew the OHL is where he wanted to be. As with almost all defencemen at this level, playing defensive hockey is almost always one area that needs improvement. The advantage that comes with playing in North Bay is that there may not be a better coach in the Canadian Hockey League than Stan Butler when it comes to teaching the defensive side of the game.

There is no questioning Dineen’s offensive game. He is one of the top defenders in the league at starting the rush. He can make a very good first pass out of the zone or he can skate it out with his quickness and agility. He possesses an almost effortless ability at jumping into the rush. Despite being a defensive coach, it appears that Butler has the utmost confidence in his abilities and has given him the green light.

Dineen is a very good powerplay quarterback. He sees the ice extremely well. He gains the zone with relative ease and can make tape to tape passes. If there is one thing he could do more of its shoot the puck. He can get the puck through bodies and it’s accurate and when he does shoot, it’s with a purpose.

Dineen may be considered a tad undersized, but if you believe the NHL is moving towards his type of defenceman, then Dineen has to be up there. He added some bulk and muscle in the offseason and trends to get stronger, which will help him more defensively.

Dineen was ranked as a C prospect on NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary list of players to watch and their updated November list. A C-prospect is considered a 4th, 5th or 6th round pick. That could change when the NHL releases its rankings later this month. He’s garnering attention and opening eyes.

Dineen wears number 4 in North Bay. He’s represented by Orr Hockey Group. Coincidence?

OHL Announces Top Performers of the Month for December

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in December 2015, including forward Brendan Lemieux of the Windsor Spitfires, defenceman Cam Dineen of the North Bay Battalion and goaltender Devin Williams of the Erie Otters.

OHL Player of the Month – Brendan Lemieux (Windsor Spitfires):
Winnipeg Jets prospect Brendan Lemieux of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Player of the Month after recording 12 goals, six assists and 18 points in nine games between Windsor and Barrie. Lemieux recorded points in all nine of his December contests, helping Windsor play to a 5-1-1-0 record following his Spitfires debut on December 10th against Mississauga. Lemieux registered a pair of hat-tricks, with one coming in a 3-0 win over Sarnia on December 11th and the second in a 6-3 win over Saginaw on December 19th. He earned star of the game recognition six times, being named the first star of the game on four different occasions. The 6’1″, 210Ib. winger is currently in the midst of a 16-game point streak that dates back to November 15th.

A native of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Lemieux was Buffalo’s 2nd round (31st overall) pick in the 2014 NHL Draft before being dealt to Winnipeg in February of 2015 in a deal that saw Tyler Myers and Drew Stafford also go to the Jets for Zach Bogosian and Evander Kane. The son of former NHL forward Claude Lemieux, Brendan is in his fourth OHL season, having amassed 94 goals, 62 assists and 156 points in 183 career regular season games to this point. He currently has 20 goals, nine assists and 29 points in 19 games this season.

OHL Defenceman & Rookie of the Month – Cam Dineen (North Bay Battalion):
Seventeen year-old rookie defenceman Cam Dineen has earned the rare distinction of being named both Defenceman and Rookie of the Month after recording two goals, 12 assists and 14 points in 10 games with a plus/minus rating of plus-6. Dineen had points in eight of his 10 December contests, including a four point performance with a goal and three assists to help the Battalion defeat the Mississauga Steelheads 6-3 on New Year’s Eve. This followed a big performance on December 18th when the Troops defeated the Niagara IceDogs 2-1 in overtime, with Dineen setting up Zach Poirier for the winning goal with just four seconds remaining. The 5’11”, 182Ib. defenceman helped North Bay’s seventh ranked powerplay produce last month with six of his 14 points coming on the man advantage.

A native of Toms River, New Jersey, Dineen currently leads OHL defencemen in scoring with six goals, 27 assists and 33 points in 36 games. The draft eligible rearguard was North Bay’s 11th round (214th overall) pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection. Williams recorded his first shutout of the season with 17 saves against the Owen Sound Attack on December 5th before leading the Otters to a 2-1 win in Ottawa on December 11th when he made 31 saves to earn first star honours. Williams was solid again on December 19th, being named first star of the game after he made 34 saves in a 3-2 shootout win over Sarnia. The former fifth round pick in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection set an Otters franchise record earlier this season, making 27 saves on October 28th in Owen Sound to claim his 73rd career OHL win. The 20 year-old is 91-39-4-4 with a 3.09 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage and eight shutouts in 151 career regular season games. WJC: Finland Captures Gold!!

In the Russian zone, Aleksi Saarela found Kapanen, who eluded defenceman Sergei Boikov and circled the net to score on a wrap-around as goalie Alexander Georgiev reached haplessly with his stick.

This is Finland’s fourth World Junior gold medal of all time. They also won in 1987, 1998, and 2014. They have now earned gold at two out of the last three tournaments.

This is the greatest era in Finnish U20 history.

It was a euphoric moment of redemption for Kapanen, who had faced some criticism for scoring just once in last year’s World Juniors. His OT winner will live forever in Finnish hockey lore.

Finland’s dynamic top line produced again. Patrik Laine and Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist apiece, while Jesse Puljujarvi added two assists. Captain Mikko Rantanen got a late power play goal to put Finland up 3-2 with 2:09 left.

Andrei Svetlakov scored twice for Russia, including the tying goal with just six seconds remaining, and captain Vladislav Kamenev added a single. Defenceman Ivan Provorov had two assists.

En route to the title, the Finns scored 35 goals. It equals their offensive output in 1998, when they also defeated Russia in overtime for gold in Helsinki. Puljujarvi (17 points), Aho (14 points) and Laine (13 points) finished 1-2-3 in tournament scoring.

Despite the disappointment of settling for silver, the Russians can take pride in their consistency. They medaled for the sixth straight year, a current streak unmatched by any other nation. Their last gold medal was in 2011 in Buffalo under head coach Valeri Bragin. When using Bragin, they have always made the final (2005, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016).

Finnish head coach Jukka Jalonen added to his growing legend. He was also behind the bench when Finland won its last IIHF World Championship gold medal in 2011, defeating Sweden 6-1 in the final in Bratislava. Jalonen captured the Finnish championship with HPK in 2006.

The Finns outshot Russia 29-25, and there was intrigue around the starting goalies.

WJC: USA Wins Bronze!!

Anders Bjork scored two goals for the Americans, as did Ryan Donato and Matthew Tkachuk, who also collected an assist. Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves.

“We played a good game today and overall a strong tournament so it’s definitely something to be proud of,” Bjork said.

“I think we had a pretty good tournament, we came here to win gold, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Bronze, I guess, is the third best thing. Better than going home empty-handed,” Nedeljkovic said with a laugh.

It was Sweden’s biggest margin of defeat in a medal game.

“We didn’t give Felix a chance, the whole team simply folded. I don’t know what happened, I just think the whole team gave up,” said Swedish defenceman Marcus Pettersson.

“I don’t know… don’t know what to say. They were better,” said his teammate Dmytro Timashov.

Team USA coach Ron Wilson and Sweden coach Rikard Gronborg had chosen different strategies as far as selecting a goaltender was concerned. Wilson sent Alex Nedeljkovic back out between the pipes while Gronborg gave the nod to backup Felix Sandstrom.

While both teams were surely disappointed after their semi-final losses, they also had no trouble finding motivational tools to get up for the bronze medal game. The Swedes, for one, could just look back at last year’s bronze medal game which they lost to Slovakia with half the team returning to this year’s tournament. They were out to redeem themselves.

“It shouldn’t be difficult at all to motivate yourself to play. It’s an honour to be able to wear the USA jersey. I was happy that we were able to come away with a win,” Nedeljkovic said.

The OHL Cup continues to showcase 20 participating teams from across Ontario and the United States with 16 of the 20 spots in 2016 guaranteed through league competition.  The 16 guaranteed spots continue to include all four GTHL Semi-Finalists, and the top four teams that place at the OMHA Championship.  Three teams from the ALLIANCE will still be guaranteed a spot in the tournament including the Champion and Finalist, along with the winner of a best-of-three Semi-Final Wild Card Series to be played between the losers of the two league Semi-Finals.  Also as in past years, two tournament entries are reserved for United States competition, while both an HNO and NOHA representative will also compete.  New in 2016, the final guaranteed spot is awarded to the highest finishing minor midget team in the HEO Midget League which in 2015-16 belongs to CIHA White.

This season the final four entries at the 2016 OHL Cup will be Wild Cards determined among eight teams that will play a one game ‘win and in’ scenario.  The eight competing teams aiming for the final four tournament spots will continue to include the fifth place team at the OMHA Championship, and the loser of the ALLIANCE Semi-Final Wild Card Series.  New in 2016, two spots in Wild Card games will be reserved for GTHL teams.  The two competing GTHL teams will be determined through a pair of Wild Card Play-In Series matchups involving the four GTHL teams who qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round.  Also new in 2016, one spot in a Wild Card will be reserved for the winner of an OMHA SCTA Consolation Game that features both teams who lost in the SCTA Tournament Semi-Final.  The OMHA teams eligible for this matchup will be determined annually based on the league not hosting the OMHA Championship.  Finally, the three remaining teams who will compete in the Wild Card matchups will be named by the Tournament Selection Committee based on regular season, playoff, and tournament play. All four Wild Card games will take place on Tuesday March 15 with specific matchups and times of play to be determined by random draw among the eight competing teams on Monday March 14.

Last season the Toronto Marlboros captured their fifth OHL Cup title in 11 years with a 3-2 overtime win over the Don Mills Flyers. Marlies forward and OHL Cup MVP Ryan McLeod followed up older brother Michael McLeod’s MVP effort in 2014 with three goals and four assists in the tournament.

McLeod was one of 12 first round draft selections from 2015 OHL Cup teams, including six of the top ten picks. Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that San Jose Sharks prospect Kevin Labanc of the Barrie Colts is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 3 recording 13 points in four games including seven goals and six assists with an impressive plus-minus rating of plus-11 to open the league’s second half.

Colts’ Kevin Labanc named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that San Jose Sharks prospect Kevin Labanc of the Barrie Colts is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 3 opening the league’s second half with 13 points in four games scoring seven goals and six assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-11.

Labanc earns the award for the second time this season helping the Colts win three of four games to maintain first place in the Central Division standings with 45 points.  He opened 2016 by matching a franchise record with seven points on Saturday night in a huge 12-2 win over the North Bay Battalion where he scored his first hat-trick of the season and added four assists.  The performance earned Labanc first star honours equalling the seven-point output by Andreas Athanasiou back on February 13, 2014.  Labanc began the week with a first star effort on Monday night scoring two goals and one assist as part of a 5-4 shootout win over the Niagara IceDogs, then scored a goal and an assist on New Year’s Eve in a 6-3 win over the Sudbury Wolves.  He finished the week by scoring a shorthanded marker, his league-best fifth of the season, in a 5-3 road loss to the Battalion on Sunday afternoon.
