Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, March 26, 2023.



Frontenacs’ Ethan Miedema Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

2023 NHL Draft prospect Ethan Miedema of the Kingston Frontenacs is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording six goals, two assists and eight points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Recording two four-point nights last week, Miedema got things started with four goals in a 6-2 win over the Oshawa Generals on Wednesday. The four-goal effort was the first by a Frontenac since Warren Foegele last netted four in a game on Mar. 26, 2016. The 6-foot-4, 201 lb. forward closed out the weekend with a pair of goals and assists to earn first star honours as the Frontenacs defeated the Generals in a high-scoring 10-2 road win to wrap-up the season on Sunday.

An 18-year-old native of Cobourg, Ont., Miedema has produced nine goals, 12 assists and 21 points in 32 games since joining the Frontenacs in January. In total, Miedema recorded 20 goals, 32 assists and 52 points in 68 games between Windsor and Kingston in 2022-23. The former first round (4th overall) pick by the Spitfires in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection has registered 34 goals, 56 assists and 90 points in 133 career regular season games. Miedema competed in the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January, and was the 45th-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midseason Rankings.

Also considered for the award this week, Anaheim Ducks prospect Sasha Pastujov of the Sarnia Sting produced two goals, seven assists and nine points in four games. Logan Morrison of the Ottawa 67’s contributed two goals and four assists for six points in a pair of victories.

67’s’ Collin MacKenzie Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Collin MacKenzie of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season, going 3-0 with a 1.35 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.

Stopping a total of 81 shots last week, MacKenzie turned aside 30 of the 31 attempts that came his way on Thursday as Ottawa defeated the Peterborough Petes 4-1. The 6-foot, 171lb. netminder was back in the crease on Friday, stopping 26 of the 28 shots he faced as the 67’s shut down the Petes on back-to-back nights. MacKenzie closed out the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Barrie Colts, blocking 25 of the 26 shots he faced to earn Ottawa’s fifth consecutive win, establishing a franchise record with 51 wins and 107 points in the standings.

An 18-year-old from Elora, Ont., MacKenzie joined goaltending partner Max Donoso in receiving the Dave Pinkney Trophy presented to the goaltenders of the team that surrenders the fewest goals-against during the regular season. MacKenzie finished the season with a 21-2-3-0 record, a 1.88 goals-against average and .928 save percentage in 30 games. He set an OHL record on Oct. 21st in Sault Ste. Marie when he made 15 consecutive shootout saves in a 2-1 victory over the Greyhounds. MacKenzie was Ottawa’s eighth round (160th overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Waterloo Wolves U16 program.

Also in the running for the award this week, rookie netminder Charlie Robertson of the North Bay Battalion recorded a two-win week with a 2.00 goals-against average, and .947 save percentage. Joey Costanzo of the Windsor Spitfires also played to a 2-0 mark with a 2.00 goals-against average and .941 save percentage.

Knights’ Sean McGurn Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

London Knights forward Sean McGurn is the OHL Player of the Week, leading all players with 13 points including five goals and eight assists in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

McGurn helped the Knights extend their current winning streak to eight games, producing four consecutive multi-point outings last week. McGurn helped London rack up nine goals on Monday, recording three goals and three assists for a career-high six points in a 9-5 win over visiting Flint. McGurn was back on the scoresheet Wednesday night, recording a goal and an assist as the Knights came back to edge the Kitchener Rangers 5-4 at home. He replicated that stat line Friday, scoring once and adding an assist as the Knights bested the visiting Erie Otters 8-1. McGurn rounded-out the week with three assists in Saturday’s 5-1 road win over the Guelph Storm, giving him a club-leading 68 points (24-44–68) in 50 games.

A 20-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., McGurn is in his third season with the Knights after recording 20 goals, 53 assists and 73 points last season. The 5-foot-11, 182Ib. co-captain has accumulated 45 goals, 99 assists and 144 points in 154 career regular season games after being selected by London in the third round (53rd overall) of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. McGurn attended rookie camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent invite this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, Knights teammate Ruslan Gazizov produced a goal and nine assists in four games, including a career-best seven points (1-6–7) on Monday against Flint. Firebirds forward and Detroit Red Wings prospect Amadeus Lombardi was also excellent, producing 10 points (4-6–10) in four games last week.

Knights’ Zach Bowen Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

London Knights rookie netminder Zach Bowen is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a 3-0 record with a 2.70 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.

Following an abbreviated start in a game the Knights would go on to win on Monday at home to Flint, Bowen strung together three straight victories to extend his current run of consecutive wins to 13. He turned aside 31 shots on Wednesday as London staged a late comeback to defeat the Kitchener Rangers 5-4. With Brett Brochu out with an injury, Bowen returned to the crease on Friday, stopping 32 of 33 to earn first star honours in an 8-1 win over the Erie Otters. He was solid again on Saturday in Guelph, making 25 saves as the Knights defeated the Storm 5-1.

A 17-year-old from Kanata, Ont., Bowen owns a record of 14-1-0-0 in his first OHL season, posting a 2.58 goals-against average and .915 save percentage with one shutout over 18 games. The 6-foot-2, 180Ib. puck stopper hasn’t lost a game since Oct. 22nd in Saginaw. Bowen was selected by the Knights in the fourth round (77th overall) from the Embrun Panthers of the EOJHL last spring. He was listed as the 29th-ranked North American goaltender on NHL Central Scouting’s midseason rankings released on Jan. 13th.

Also considered for the award this week, Mississauga Steelheads rookie Ryerson Leenders went 2-0 with a 2.17 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in victories over Owen Sound and Sudbury. Joey Costanzo also played to a 2-0 mark with a 2.50 goals-against average and .921 save percentage for the West Division-leading Windsor Spitfires.

Draft Eligible Forward of the Month – Quentin Musty – Sudbury Wolves

For the second consecutive month, Quentin Musty is our draft eligible forward of the Month. The Sudbury Wolves star netted 3 goals and 17 assists in 10 games during the month of December. He was held pointless in just one game – December 30 against the North Bay Battalion. He had 5 multi point games including a 1 goal, 6 assist effort against the Niagara IceDogs on December 4.

Also considered was Colton Smith of the Windsor Spitfires. Smith appeared in 11 games during December, notching 7 goals to go along with 8 helpers. Smith was kept off the score sheet 3 times and 6 of his 8 other games were multi point games.

Draft Eligible Defenceman of the Month – Beau Akey – Barrie Colts

Among defencemen, Beau Akey got our nod. Akey posted 12 points in 10 games with points in 8 of those 10 games. He had 4 multi-point games including 2-point efforts against the Sarnia Sting on December 4, Oshawa Generals on December 11 and Sudbury Wolves on December 13. He posted a 3-point effort with a goal and 2 assists on December 30 against the Owen Sound Attack.

Also considered was Sudbury Wolves defender Matthew Mania. Mania appeared in 10 games for the Wolves in December scoring twice and assisting on 10 others. It’s his consistency that impressed the most with points in 7 of his 10 games including a 3-point night against the Niagara IceDogs on December 4 and 2-oint nights against the Barrie Colts on December 10 and Oshawa Generals on December 18.

Draft Eligible Goaltender of the Month – Joey Costanzo – Windsor Spitfires

Our choice for draft eligible goaltender of the month is Joey Costanzo of the Windsor Spitfires. Costanzo started 4 games for the Spits in December winning all 4 contests. He also came in relief for one game stopping all 6 shots he faced in a period. Altogether he stopped 132 of 142 shots he faced for a .930 save-percentage while posting a 2.33 goals-against-average.

Spirit’s Dalton Duhart Named OHL Player of the Week

Saginaw Spirit forward Dalton Duhart is the OHL Player of the Week, recording six goals, four assists and 10 points in three games.

Duhart helped the Spirit win two of three last week, recording his 100th career OHL point in the process. He scored twice and added an assist in an 8-5 road loss against the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday. Duhart turned in a career-best six point performance in Sarnia on Friday, helping the Spirit complete a remarkable comeback with four goals in the final 3:11 of regulation to overcome an 8-4 deficit. Duhart scored three third period goals before netting his fourth of the night with 10 seconds remaining in overtime as the Spirit defeated the Sting 9-8. He picked up an assist in Saturday’s 5-4 road win over the Flint Firebirds to give him points in eight of his last nine games. Duhart is the first Spirit player to earn OHL Player of the Week honours since Cole Perfetti last did so in February 2020.

A 21-year-old native of Grand Blanc, Mich., Duhart sits third in Spirit scoring with 49 points including 18 goals and 31 assists in 59 games this season. The overage winger is in the midst of his fourth OHL season in a career spent between London, Barrie and Saginaw that has yielded 46 goals, 60 assists and 106 points over 217 contests. Duhart was London’s third round (47th overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Windsor Spitfires forward Wyatt Johnston added to his OHL scoring lead with 10 points (5-5–10) in four victories. Spirit teammate Mitchell Smith was also in the running with seven points (3-4–7) in three games from the back end for Saginaw.

IceDogs’ Joey Costanzo Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Joey Costanzo of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 1.00 goals-against average and .973 save percentage, backstopping the IceDogs to wins over Peterborough and Erie.

Costanzo turned away 71 of the 73 shots that came his way as the IceDogs continued their strong play, coming away with six of a possible eight points last week. He earned first star honours in Tuesday’s 2-1 overtime win over visiting Peterborough, stopping 32 of 33 as the Dogs were victorious on a Dakota Betts overtime tally. Costanzo was first star again on Sunday, picking up an assist while making 39 saves as the IceDogs defeated the Erie Otters 3-1 on the road.

A 17-year-old native of Toronto, Ont., Costanzo owns a 5-8-0-0 record with a 4.79 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in his first OHL season. The 6-foot, 161Ib. netminder was the first goalie selected in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, going in the second round (23rd overall) to Niagara from the Toronto Marlboros U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Kingston Frontenacs netminder Aidan Spooner played to a 1-1 mark with a 1.99 goals-against average and .934 save percentage, making 30 saves in an overtime win over Mississauga on Friday. London Knights rookie Owen Flores recorded his first career shutout on Sunday, making 31 saves as the Knights blanked the Guelph Storm.

The Ontario Hockey League is a proud member of the Canadian Hockey League which is the world’s largest development hockey league with 60 teams in nine Canadian provinces and four American states. In addition to the OHL, the CHL is made up of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League. The CHL supplies more players to the National Hockey League and U SPORTS than any other league.
