Bulldogs’ Mason McTavish Named OHL Player of the Week

Anaheim Ducks prospect Mason McTavish of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, three assists and seven points in four Bulldogs victories.

McTavish found the back of the net in all four outings, recording a goal and an assist in his return to the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday as the Bulldogs took a 6-2 decision. He scored the third period game winner in a 3-2 triumph over the Oshawa Generals on Thursday, and tacked on an additional goal and assist a night later in Erie as Hamilton prevailed by a score of 3-0. McTavish wrapped things up with a goal and assist in Sunday’s 6-1 win over visiting Peterborough, finalizing a productive week that saw Hamilton clinch its second East Division banner.

A 19-year-old native of Carp, Ont., McTavish has registered 40 points (18-22–40) in 25 games between Hamilton and Peterborough this season, collecting 33 of those (12-21–33) since joining the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-1, 207Ib. centre recorded two goals and an assist in nine games with the Anaheim Ducks earlier this season, also appearing in three games with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls where he posted a goal and assist. Voted to the OHL’s second all-rookie team in 2019-20 before winning World Under-18 gold with Team Canada in 2021, McTavish was selected by Anaheim with the third overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft. The Peterborough Petes selected him with the fifth overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the Pembroke Lumber Kings U18 program.

Also considered for the award this week, reigning OHL Player of the Month and current scoring leader Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires recorded seven points (2-5–7) in three wins, while Guelph’s Cooper Walker had six points (4-2–6) over three outings as the Storm went 3-0.

Generals’ Patrick Leaver Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Patrick Leaver of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0-0-1 with a 2.52 goals-against average and .933 save percentage as the Generals collected five of a possible six points and clinched a spot in the OHL Playoffs.

Leaver was kept busy, making 111 saves in three outings beginning with 30 in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Ottawa 67’s on Tuesday that netted him first star honours. He was first star again on Friday in Kingston, turning aside 40 of 43 before stopping three of four in a shootout as the Generals won 4-3. Leaver saved the best for last, making 41 saves in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win over the visiting Frontenacs, backstopping the Generals to two points despite being outshot 43-22. He joins Barrie’s Mack Guzda as the second netminder to earn Goaltender of the Week honours three times this season.

An 18-year-old from Perth, Ont., Leaver has played to a mark of 22-17-1-3 this season with a 3.16 goals-against average and .909 save percentage to go with two shutouts. The 6-foot-1, 186Ib. The former eighth round (158th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection was the 29th-ranked North American goaltender on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings released in January.

Also considered for the award this week, Jacob Oster of the Guelph Storm picked up a pair of wins including a 43-save effort in Flint on Saturday as the Storm booked a trip to the OHL Playoffs. Hamilton Bulldogs goaltender Matteo Drobac earned his first career OHL shutout, going 2-0 with a 0.86 goals-against average and .957 save percentage as the Bulldogs clinched an East Division title.

OHL ANNOUNCES TOP PERFORMERS OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in March 2022, including Windsor Spitfires forward Wyatt Johnston, Saginaw Spirit blueliner Pavel Mintyukov, Owen Sound Attack forward Cedrick Guindon and Hamilton Bulldogs netminder Marco Costantini.

OHL Player of the Month – Wyatt Johnston (Windsor Spitfires):
For the third time this season, Dallas Stars prospect Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Player of the Month, producing 13 goals, 17 assists and 30 points in 15 March matchups. Johnston, who also registered a plus/minus rating of plus-11, posted multi-point outputs in 11 of his 15 contests, scoring four game winning goals as the Spits played to a record of 12-2-1-0. Johnston helped the Spitfires collect an important two points in a West Division clash at the beginning of the month, scoring and adding two assists in a 7-3 win over Sault Ste. Marie on Mar. 5th. He chipped in on a Will Cuylle OT winner, picking up three points in a 5-4 triumph over the Erie Otters on Mar. 12th. Johnston’s first career hat trick came on Mar. 19th in Flint as the Spits leapfrogged the Firebirds in the West Division standings with a 6-3 win. He’s riding a run of seven consecutive multi-point outings, with the latest contribution coming Thursday night with three points in a 5-1 win over Sarnia. Johnston earned star of the game recognition seven different times, picking up first star honours in four games.

An 18-year-old native of Toronto, Ont., Johnston leads the OHL with 115 points (42-73–115) in 61 games, also boasting a plus-30 rating. Johnston’s 115 points are the 11th-most in Windsor Spitfires history. He was a first round (23rd overall) pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2021 NHL Draft, and signed a three-year entry level NHL contract with the club on Sept. 28, 2021. A former World Under-18 Hockey Championship gold medalist with Team Canada, Johnston was Windsor’s first round (6th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

OHL Defenceman of the Month – Pavel Mintyukov (Saginaw Spirit):
First-year Saginaw Spirit blueliner Pavel Mintyukov is the OHL Defenceman of the Month for March, leading all rearguards with 15 points including five goals and 10 assists in 13 games. The 2022 NHL Draft prospect recently competed in the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and registered three different multi-point outings for the Spirit in the month of March. Mintyukov became the only OHL defenceman to record six points in a game this season on Mar. 11th, setting a Spirit record for blueliners by scoring twice while adding four assists in a 7-6 win over Owen Sound. He put up a goal and two assists in an 8-5 loss to the London Knights on Mar. 18th and did so again on Mar. 25th as the Spirit staged a big comeback to defeat the Sarnia Sting 9-8 in overtime. Mintyukov is the first Spirit defenceman to earn OHL Defenceman of the Month honours since Bode Wilde last did so in December 2018.

An 18-year-old late 2003-born defenceman, Mintyukov has 15 goals, 38 assists and 53 points in 60 games this season, and is one of six blueliners in Spirit history to eclipse the 50-point mark in a campaign. The 6-foot-2, 190Ib. defender was the fifth-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Draft Rankings. The Spirit selected Mintyukov with the 52nd overall pick of the 2020 CHL Import Draft.

OHL Goaltender of the Month – Marco Costantini (Hamilton Bulldogs):
Marco Costantini of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Month for March, playing to a perfect 9-0-0-0 record with a minuscule 1.03 goals-against average, .960 save percentage and two shutouts. Costantini stopped 214 of the 223 shots he faced over the course of the month, helping the Bulldogs maintain their standing atop the Ontario Hockey League. Among his best performances included a 34-save effort on Mar. 11th in Mississauga as the Bulldogs beat the Steelheads 5-1. He posted an 18-save shutout on Mar. 14th, backstopping Hamilton to a 3-0 win over the Oshawa Generals outdoors at Tim Hortons Field. Costantini earned first star honours in an East Division showdown with Kingston on Mar. 18th, making 29 saves in a 3-1 win over the Frontenacs. He recorded his league-leading fifth shutout of the season on Mar. 27th in Oshawa, stopping 16 as the Bulldogs won 3-0. Costantini becomes the first Bulldogs netminder to earn OHL Goaltender of the Month recognition.

A 19-year-old Hamilton native, Costantini owns the league’s lowest goals-against average of 2.42, going 27-9-2-2 with a .914 save percentage and league-high matching five shutouts. Costantini has won 18 of his last 19 starts. He was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the OHL Cup finalist Vaughan Kings U16 program.

OHL Rookie of the Month – Cedrick Guindon (Owen Sound Attack):
Draft eligible Owen Sound Attack forward Cedrick Guindon is the OHL Rookie of the Month for March, recording 10 goals, eight assists and 18 points in 14 games with a plus/minus rating of plus-9. Guindon had points in 11 of his 14 March contests, producing five different multi-point performances. He became one of five OHL players to score four goals in a game this season on Mar. 4th, providing the Attack scoring in a 4-3 overtime road win over the Guelph Storm. He added a goal and an assist as the Attack beat the Storm once again on Mar. 7th. Guindon strung together points in six straight games from Mar. 11th to 22nd, helping the Attack ascend the Western Conference standings as they collected at least one point in each of them. He rounded-out the month of March with goals in back-to-back wins over the Sarnia Sting last weekend. Guindon is the first Attack player to win OHL Rookie of the Month honours since Artur Gavrus in October 2011.

A 17-year-old from Rockland, Ont., Guindon’s 54 points are the second-most among OHL rookies while his 27 goals place him third, one back of teammate Colby Barlow. He sits fourth among OHL rookies with 184 shots on goal. Guindon is having among the best seasons of any 16 or 17-year-old rookie in Attack franchise history with his 54 points standing as the most in that category. Guindon is the 76th-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Draft Rankings. He was the club’s first round (10th overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

Spirit’s Dalton Duhart Named OHL Player of the Week

Saginaw Spirit forward Dalton Duhart is the OHL Player of the Week, recording six goals, four assists and 10 points in three games.

Duhart helped the Spirit win two of three last week, recording his 100th career OHL point in the process. He scored twice and added an assist in an 8-5 road loss against the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday. Duhart turned in a career-best six point performance in Sarnia on Friday, helping the Spirit complete a remarkable comeback with four goals in the final 3:11 of regulation to overcome an 8-4 deficit. Duhart scored three third period goals before netting his fourth of the night with 10 seconds remaining in overtime as the Spirit defeated the Sting 9-8. He picked up an assist in Saturday’s 5-4 road win over the Flint Firebirds to give him points in eight of his last nine games. Duhart is the first Spirit player to earn OHL Player of the Week honours since Cole Perfetti last did so in February 2020.

A 21-year-old native of Grand Blanc, Mich., Duhart sits third in Spirit scoring with 49 points including 18 goals and 31 assists in 59 games this season. The overage winger is in the midst of his fourth OHL season in a career spent between London, Barrie and Saginaw that has yielded 46 goals, 60 assists and 106 points over 217 contests. Duhart was London’s third round (47th overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Windsor Spitfires forward Wyatt Johnston added to his OHL scoring lead with 10 points (5-5–10) in four victories. Spirit teammate Mitchell Smith was also in the running with seven points (3-4–7) in three games from the back end for Saginaw.

IceDogs’ Joey Costanzo Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Joey Costanzo of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 1.00 goals-against average and .973 save percentage, backstopping the IceDogs to wins over Peterborough and Erie.

Costanzo turned away 71 of the 73 shots that came his way as the IceDogs continued their strong play, coming away with six of a possible eight points last week. He earned first star honours in Tuesday’s 2-1 overtime win over visiting Peterborough, stopping 32 of 33 as the Dogs were victorious on a Dakota Betts overtime tally. Costanzo was first star again on Sunday, picking up an assist while making 39 saves as the IceDogs defeated the Erie Otters 3-1 on the road.

A 17-year-old native of Toronto, Ont., Costanzo owns a 5-8-0-0 record with a 4.79 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in his first OHL season. The 6-foot, 161Ib. netminder was the first goalie selected in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, going in the second round (23rd overall) to Niagara from the Toronto Marlboros U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Kingston Frontenacs netminder Aidan Spooner played to a 1-1 mark with a 1.99 goals-against average and .934 save percentage, making 30 saves in an overtime win over Mississauga on Friday. London Knights rookie Owen Flores recorded his first career shutout on Sunday, making 31 saves as the Knights blanked the Guelph Storm.

Spitfires’ Matthew Maggio Named OHL Player of the Week

Windsor Spitfires forward Matthew Maggio is the OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, seven assists and 10 points along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8 in four contests.

Maggio helped the Spits surge to within one point of first place in the Western Conference with three straight wins. After recording an assist in a 4-3 road loss to Sarnia on Tuesday, Maggio matched a career-high with four points including two goals and two assists, netting the overtime winner for his 30th of the campaign in a 6-5 road win over Owen Sound on Wednesday. He was a catalyst in another big Spitfires road win on Saturday in Flint, scoring while adding two assists for second star honours as Windsor defeated the first place Firebirds 6-3. Maggio recorded a pair of primary assists in Sunday’s 7-4 victory to guide Windsor to another win over Flint, pushing them to within one point of the Firebirds at the top of the standings.

A native of Tecumseh, Ont., Maggio sits second in Spitfires scoring with 69 points including 31 goals and 38 assists over 54 games to go with a plus/minus rating of plus-22. Maggio’s seven game winning goals are tied for the third most in the OHL. The 6-foot, 181Ib. right-winger has accumulated 38 goals, 52 assists and 90 points in 134 career regular season contests between Windsor and Ottawa. He was originally a fifth round (86th overall) pick of the 67’s in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Maggio attended rookie camp with the Washington Capitals last September.

Also considered for the award this week, London Knights teammates Luke Evangelista and Antonio Stranges both had impressive weeks as the Knights went 2-1-0-1. Evangelista led all players with 12 points (3-9–12) over four games, reaching a league-leading 48 goals on the season. Stranges put up 11 points (6-5–11) over four outings including a five-point effort on Friday against Saginaw.

Bulldogs’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marco Costantini of the Hamilton Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 3-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average, .973 save percentage and one shutout.

Costantini stopped 71 of the 73 shots that came his way in wins over Oshawa, Kingston and Ottawa as the Bulldogs became the OHL’s first team to reach the 40-win mark. He stopped all 18 shots he faced in Monday’s Outdoor Showcase as the Bulldogs won their 12th straight game, blanking the Oshawa Generals 3-0 at Tim Hortons Field. Costantini turned in a first star performance on Friday in Kingston, making 29 saves as the Bulldogs beat the Frontenacs 3-1. He rounded out the weekend on Sunday in Ottawa, stopping 24 in a 3-1 win over the 67’s.

A 19-year-old Hamilton native, Costantini owns the league’s second-lowest goals-against average of 2.48, going 25-9-2-2 with a .912 save percentage and league-high matching four shutouts. Costantini has won 16 of his last 17 starts, and earns OHL Goaltender of the Week honours for the second time this season. He was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the OHL Cup finalist Vaughan Kings U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes stopped 92 of 97 shots, going 2-1 across three starts with a 1.67 goals-against average and .948 save percentage. Arizona Coyotes prospect Anson Thornton of the Sarnia Sting was also 2-1, recording his first career OHL shutout to finish with a 2.34 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

Frontenacs’ Lucas Edmonds Named OHL Player of the Week

Kingston Frontenacs forward Lucas Edmonds is the OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, six assists and nine points in three victories.

Edmonds put together three consecutive three-point performances as Kingston defeated Peterborough, Oshawa and Niagara. He scored and tacked on two assists on Thursday as the Fronts bested the Petes 5-4 in Peterborough. Edmonds added three primary assists in Friday’s 7-2 win over visiting Oshawa before scoring his 29th and 30th goals of the season on Sunday, adding an assist as the Frontenacs clinched a playoff spot with a 5-2 win over Niagara. He earns Player of the Week honours for the second time this season.

A 21-year-old native of North Bay, Ont., Edmonds sits second in OHL scoring with 95 points including 30 goals and 65 assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-26. His 223 shots on goal are the fourth-most in the League while his 35 power play points lead all players. The first-year winger was originally Kingston’s seventh round (131st overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection before spending the past four seasons playing between the junior and professional ranks in Sweden. Edmonds was the 107th-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings for the 2022 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Frontenacs teammate Shane Wright had eight points (3-5–8) in Kingston’s three victories while San Jose Sharks prospect Ethan Cardwell of the Barrie Colts returned to the lineup with seven points (2-5–7) as his team won two of three last week.

Attack’s Nick Chenard Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Nick Chenard of the Owen Sound Attack is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after going 2-0-1-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average and .944 save percentage.

Chenard, who was a runner-up for last week’s distinction, made 101 saves for the Attack in three games, helping them extend their run of consecutive games undefeated in regulation to nine. He turned aside 41 shots on Monday night, backstopping the Bears past the visiting Guelph Storm 5-3 for his sixth consecutive win. Chenard returned to the crease in front of a hometown crowd in Windsor on Thursday, making 30 saves as the Attack fell to the Spitfires 2-1 in overtime. He closed out the weekend stopping 30 of 31 in Saginaw on Saturday as Owen Sound skated to a 5-1 win.

A 19-year-old native of Tecumseh, Ont., Chenard owns a record of 19-12-3-1 this season with a 3.03 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and two shutouts. Now in his second season with the Attack after being a sixth round (108th overall) pick of the club in 2018, he owns a career record of 25-16-3-2 with a 2.99 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in 50 career regular season games.

Also considered for the award this week, reigning award recipient Marco Costantini of the Hamilton Bulldogs went 2-0-0-0, stopping 52 of 55 as the Dogs took road wins over Barrie and Mississauga. Flint Firebirds goaltender Luke Cavallin was also solid, going 2-0-0-0 with a 2.02 goals-against average and .956 save percentage in wins over London and Guelph.

Sting’s Theo Hill Named OHL Player of the Week

Sarnia Sting forward Theo Hill is the OHL Player of the Week, putting together nine assists in three games as the Sting won a pair of games.

Hill’s marquee performance came on Wednesday, helping the Sting win a high-scoring thriller over the Saginaw Spirit with six assists in a 10-6 final. The six helpers are the most by an OHL player in a game this season, coming one shy of the Sting single game record of seven set by Charlie Sarault on Feb. 22, 2013 against Erie. Hill was back dishing out assists on Friday, picking up three helpers in Sarnia’s 6-5 win over the Soo Greyhounds as he helped set up Marko Sikic for the overtime winner. Hill was pointless, but won 16-of-23 faceoffs in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Hill becomes the first Sting player to earn OHL Player of the Week honours since Jordan Kyrou in February 2018.

A 19-year-old from Hagersville, Ont., Hill has 16 goals, 21 assists and 37 points in 48 games for the Sting in this, his third OHL season. The former fifth round (99th overall) pick by Sarnia in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection owns career totals that include 30 goals, 36 assists and 66 points across 161 regular season contests.

Also considered for the award this week, Sarnia Sting teammate Marko Sikic recorded seven points (2-5–7) in three games last week while Barrie Colts forward Evan Vierling posted three straight two-point efforts, finishing with six (5-1–6) as his team played to a 3-0 record.

Bulldogs’ Marco Costantini Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marco Costantini is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a 2-0 record with a 0.96 goals-against average and .962 save percentage for the first place Hamilton Bulldogs.

Costantini stopped 50 of 52 shots last week, helping Hamilton extend its winning streak to nine in 2-1 victories over Mississauga and Ottawa. He made 26 saves at home to the Central Division-leading Steelheads on Thursday as the Bulldogs prevailed on a late game winner from Avery Hayes. Costantini was solid in front of a national audience on Friday, turning in a first star performance with 24 saves and a 3-for-4 shootout showing against twin brother Anthony and the Ottawa 67’s on TSN.

A 19-year-old Hamilton native, Costantini is 20-9-2-2 with a 2.69 goals-against average, .906 save percentage and three shutouts in 34 games this season. The 6-foot-1, 185Ib. goaltender owns a career OHL record of 30-24-8-2 with a 3.48 goals-against average and .889 save percentage. Costantini was Hamilton’s fifth round (95th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection after backstopping the Vaughan Kings to an appearance in the OHL Cup Final.

Also considered for the award this week, Owen Sound Attack goaltender Nick Chenard played to a 3-0 mark with a 1.67 goals-against average and .933 save percentage including a 27-save shutout against the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday. Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes was also 3-0, posting a 2.33 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in the process.

OHL ANNOUNCES TOP PERFORMERS OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in February 2022, including Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison, Guelph Storm defenceman Michael Buchinger and Flint Firebirds goaltender Luke Cavallin.

OHL Player of the Month – Logan Morrison (Hamilton Bulldogs):
With an impressive 29 points in the month of February, Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison is the OHL Player of the Month. Morrison recorded seven goals, 22 assists and a plus/minus rating of plus-21 over 10 games as the Bulldogs played to an 11-1-0-0 record in February, ascending to first place in the OHL standings. The third-year centreman earned star of the game recognition in five of his 10 outings, racking up nine different multi-point outputs. Morrison put up four points four different times including Feb. 11th against Barrie (1-3–4), Feb. 19th against Kingston (1-3–4), Feb. 25th against North Bay (2-2–4) and Feb. 27th in Niagara (1-3–4). He won 100 of his 188 faceoffs (53.2%) over the course of the month and found the back of the net in six of his 10 contests. Morrison becomes the first Bulldog to win OHL Player of the Month honours since Jan Jenik last did so in November 2019.

A 19-year-old native of Guelph, Ont., Morrison sits sixth in OHL scoring, leading the Bulldogs with 75 points (23-52–75) over 41 games this season. Named OHL Player of the Week twice in February, Morrison has recorded 154 points (60-94–154) over 147 career regular season games since being Hamilton’s first round (18th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings last fall.

OHL Defenceman & Rookie of the Month – Michael Buchinger (Guelph Storm):
Draft eligible blueliner Michael Buchinger of the Guelph Storm is a dual award winner, claiming both OHL Defenceman and Rookie of the Month honours for February. The first-year rearguard led all OHL blueliners and rookies with 17 points including two goals and 15 assists over 12 games, helping the Storm play to a record of 6-4-2-0. Buchinger had points in 10 of his 12 contests, recording back-to-back three point performances on Feb. 21 against Owen Sound (2-1–3) and Feb. 25 against Windsor (0-3–3). He finished the month with a season-high four assists as Guelph defeated Kitchener 7-3 on Feb. 27th. Buchinger is the first Storm player to earn OHL Defenceman of the Month recognition since Sean Durzi in January 2019. He is the first Guelph player to be named Rookie of the Month since goaltender Thomas McCollum in January 2007.

A 17-year-old native of Markham, Ont., Buchinger sits second among OHL rookie defencemen with 37 points (4-33–37) along with a plus/minus rating of plus-15 in 46 games this season. The 6-foot, 185Ib. left-shot rearguard was selected by the Storm in the second round (24th overall) of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. Buchinger was the 36th-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Draft Rankings. He was recently selected to compete in the upcoming 2022 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on March 23 in Kitchener.

OHL Goaltender of the Month – Luke Cavallin (Flint Firebirds):
Flint Firebirds netminder Luke Cavallin is the OHL Goaltender of the Month for February, going undefeated in regulation with an 8-0-1-1 record, 2.65 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 11 games. Cavallin backstopped the Firebirds to the top of the Western Conference standings, making 358 saves over the course of the month. He opened February with a 35-save performance in Saginaw as the Firebirds prevailed 7-1 on Feb. 2nd. He was brilliant on Feb. 12th in Erie, turning aside 38 shots in a 5-1 Flint victory. Cavallin backstopped the Firebirds to a point in Sault Ste. Marie on Feb. 16th, stopping 43 of 44 in a 2-1 shootout loss. He turned aside a career-high 51 shots on Feb. 19th at home to Windsor, helping the Firebirds beat the Spitfires 3-2 in a shootout. Cavallin stopped all 34 shots he faced on Feb. 25th in Sarnia as the Firebirds won by a score of 6-0. He’s the first Firebirds netminder to ever win OHL Goaltender of the Month honours, and the first in franchise history to do so since Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers in February 2013.

A 20-year-old from Greely, Ont., Cavallin has played to a 25-9-1-3 record with a 3.19 goals-against average, .909 save percentage and two shutouts in 40 games this season. His 2,331 minutes played and 1,236 saves are both second in the OHL and he hasn’t lost in regulation since Jan. 16th, a run of 16 appearances. Flint’s career leader in games played (127), wins (51) and shutouts (2), Cavallin is in his fourth season with the franchise after being selected in the second round (28th overall) of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

Bulldogs’ Logan Morrison Named OHL Player of the Week

Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison is the OHL Player of the Week with four goals, nine assists and 13 points in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-10.

Morrison earns player of the week recognition for the second time in three weeks, recording four consecutive multi-point games as the Bulldogs climbed to top spot in the Ontario Hockey League. Morrison had a goal and two assists on Family Day as Hamilton defeated Erie 7-2. He followed up with two goals and two assists on Friday, earning first star honours as the Bulldogs defeated North Bay 7-2. Morrison chipped in with two helpers on Saturday, setting up Nathan Staios for the overtime winner as the Dogs downed the Ottawa 67’s 4-3. Sunday featured another four-point effort with a goal and three assists, giving him an impressive 29 points in the month of February as the Bulldogs defeated Niagara 10-2.

A 19-year-old from Guelph, Ont., Morrison is sixth in OHL scoring with 75 points including 23 goals and 52 assists over 41 games with a League-leading plus/minus rating of plus-39. The 6-foot, 180Ib. centre has also won 56.6 percent of his faceoffs this season. Now in his third OHL season, Morrison has recorded 154 points (60-94–154) over 147 career regular season games. He was Hamilton’s first round (18th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Guelph Gryphons U16 program. He attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings last fall.

Also considered for the award this week, 2022 NHL Draft prospect Michael Buchinger recorded 11 points (2-9–11) over four games from the blue line as the Guelph Storm played to a 3-0-1-0 mark. Bulldogs blueliner Nathan Staios recorded nine points (3-6–9) over four games with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

Frontenacs’ Leevi Merilainen Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Ottawa Senators prospect Leevi Merilainen of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after going 3-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and .948 save percentage.

Merilainen stopped 73 of 77 shots, helping the Frontenacs defeat Ottawa with 26 saves on Family Day before claiming back-to-back wins over Oshawa. Merilainen stood tall on TSN Friday night, stopping 25 of 27 as the Frontenacs defeated the Generals 6-2. He turned aside 22 of 23 on the road Sunday night as the Frontenacs beat Oshawa 3-1.

A 19-year-old from Oulu, Finland, Merilainen sits third in OHL wins with 24, playing to an overall record of 24-12-3-0 with a 3.43 goals-against average and .889 save percentage and two shutouts. The first-year goaltender was a third round (71st overall) pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2020 NHL Draft, and signed an entry-level contract with the franchise on June 14, 2021. Merilainen was Kingston’s first round (48th overall) pick in the 2021 CHL Import Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Flint Firebirds netminder Luke Cavallin went 3-0 with a 2.01 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, making 88 saves as the Firebirds defeated Sarnia three times. Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes went 2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .948 save percentage, making 73 saves as the Petes prevailed over Barrie and Oshawa.

Knights’ Antonio Stranges Named OHL Player of the Week

Dallas Stars prospect Antonio Stranges of the London Knights is the OHL Player of the Week, leading all skaters with eight points including five goals and three assists across three victories along with a plus/minus rating of plus-5.

Earning Player of the Week honours for the second time this season, Stranges scored the game winning goal in all three London wins last week as the Knights tightened their grip on first place in the Midwest Division. He put the Knights ahead 1:23 into the third period on Wednesday as London defeated the Guelph Storm 4-2. Stranges was at his best on Friday against Sault Ste. Marie, matching a career-high with four points including two goals and two assists as the Knights beat the Greyhounds 8-5. Stranges wrapped up the week in the clutch on Saturday in Erie, scoring his second of the night with just 22 seconds left in the third period to push the Knights past the Otters 3-2.

A 20-year-old native of Plymouth, Mich., Stranges has points in seven of his last eight games and sits second in London scoring with 48 points including 17 goals and 31 assists over 35 games. Now in his third OHL campaign, Stranges has recorded 122 points (49-73–122) over 162 regular season games since joining the Knights as a second round (21st overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He made his professional debut last season, recording an assist during a nine-game stint with the AHL’s Texas Stars, top affiliate of the Dallas Stars who selected him in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, reigning Player of the Week Logan Morrison of the Hamilton Bulldogs came back strong with seven points (1-6–7) as Hamilton went 3-0. San Jose Sharks prospect Liam Gilmartin, also of the London Knights, was productive with six points (4-2–6) as he suited up in a pair of Knights victories.

Colts’ Mack Guzda Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Florida Panthers prospect Mack Guzda of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after going 3-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and .955 save percentage, helping his team halt a seven-game losing slide.

Guzda claims the honour for the third time this season, stopping 84 of the 88 shots he faced as the Colts defeated Owen Sound, Mississauga and Oshawa. Having recently signed a three-year entry-level NHL contract with Florida, Guzda stopped 24 of 26 as the Colts beat the Attack 5-2 on Tuesday night. He turned in a first star performance on Friday in Mississauga, backstopping the Colts past the first place Steelheads 3-1 with 33 saves. Guzda rounded out the week earning second star recognition with 27 saves as the Colts defeated the visiting Oshawa Generals 5-1 on Saturday.

A 21-year-old native of Knoxville, Tenn., Guzda is 19-10-1-1 with a 2.65 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 31 games between Barrie and Owen Sound. Now 14-6-1-0 since joining the Colts in mid-November, Guzda was originally Owen Sound’s second round (31st overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, and has played to career mark of 77-55-11-7. He signed an NHL contract with the Florida Panthers as an undrafted free agent on Feb. 7th.

Also considered for the award this week, San Jose Sharks prospect Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting went 3-0 with a 2.92 goals-against average and .917 save percentage, piling up 48 saves in a win on Tuesday. Luke Cavallin of the Flint Firebirds was busy, stopping 129 of 137 shots while going 1-0-1-1, making 51 saves to help his team come out on top on Saturday.

Bulldogs’ Logan Morrison Named OHL Player of the Week

Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison is the OHL Player of the Week with two goals, seven assists and nine points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

Morrison put up three consecutive multi-point performances as the Bulldogs won a pair of games last week. He recorded two assists in his return from injury on Tuesday, helping Hamilton double-up the first place Mississauga Steelheads 4-2 on the road. Morrison followed up with a four-point effort, scoring and adding three helpers at home on Friday as the Bulldogs defeated the Barrie Colts 5-1 for their seventh straight win. He ended the weekend with a goal and two assists on Sunday afternoon in Kingston, extending his current point streak to 12 games as the Bulldogs fell just short, losing 5-4 to the Frontenacs. Morrison is the first Bulldogs player to earn OHL Player of the Week honours since Jan Jenik in November 2019.

Also considered for the award this week, Kingston Frontenacs forward Jordan Frasca recorded three goals, five assists and eight points in three games as the Fronts won a pair last week. North Bay Battalion forward and OHL scoring leader Brandon Coe recorded three goals, four assists and seven points as the Troops won three in a row.

Rangers’ Pavel Cajan Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Pavel Cajan of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, stopping 109 shots across a pair of victories to post a 3.46 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.

Cajan was the difference in Kitchener’s 6-4 win over the London Knights on Friday’s CHL on TSN broadcast, stopping 44 shots as the Rangers defeated their division rival for the first time since December 2019. He returned to the crease on Saturday, stopping an OHL season-high 65 shots as the Rangers defeated the host Owen Sound Attack 4-3 on a game winner by Joseph Serpa. Cajan becomes the first Rangers netminder to stop 60 shots in a regular season game since Reg Bourcier on Oct. 1, 1999 against Erie. Luke Opilka made 64 saves in a playoff game on Mar. 29, 2017 against Owen Sound. Cajan helped the Rangers pick up four points despite their being outshot 116-63.

A 19-year-old native of Hlubos, Czechia, Cajan has played to a 12-9-1-1 record with a 3.37 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 23 games this season. The 6-foot-2, 174Ib. goaltender was selected by Kitchener in the first round (49th overall) of the 2020 CHL Import Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Xavier Medina of the Windsor Spitfires played to a 2-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in victories over Saginaw and London. Rookie Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion also went 2-0, posting a 2.00 goals-against average and .925 save percentage as the Troops defeated Niagara and Sudbury.
