Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the fifth edition of the weekly minor midget rankings for the 2020 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament powered by Under Armour and hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

The 2020 OHL Cup powered by Under Armour and hosted by the GTHL is scheduled for March 17-23 and will feature 20 teams from across Ontario and the United States showcasing many of the top players eligible for the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.  All games will be played at Scotiabank Pond in Toronto until the Championship Final moves to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Monday, March 23.

The weekly rankings are determined by a panel of OHL Central Scouting staff and represent the top teams that are competing to play in the annual year-end championship tournament.

The Quinte Red Devils continue to hold the top spot headed into the new year after making the final four at this past weekend’s Toronto Marlbroros Holiday Classic Tournament. Just as they did at the Whitby International Silver Stick, Detroit Honeybaked came out on top at the annual event while Quinte, the eighth-ranked Hamilton Huskies, ninth-ranked Vaughan Kings and honourable mention Whitby Wildcats all made it into the quarter-finals. Also on the rise this week are the Toronto Titans, Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs and Toronto Nationals.

History:
Last season the Don Mills Flyers overcame a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Toronto Red Wings 6-5 as Shane Wright (Kingston Frontenacs) set up Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds) for the overtime winning goal. The Flyers added both OHL Cup and GTHL Championships to their incredible season that saw them lose just once. An exceptional status player who was selected by the Kingston Frontenacs with the first overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Wright was named Tournament MVP with 18 points over seven contests, one shy of Connor McDavid’s 2012 event record.

67’s’ JOSEPH GARREFFA NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that overage forward Joseph Garreffa of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week of games spanning December 18-29 with a goal, nine assists and 10 points over three contests.

Garreffa continued a current 15-game point streak, helping the 67’s stretch their winning streak to 13 and claim first place in the OHL standings. The 5-foot-7, 176Ib. winger racked up three assists in a 5-4 overtime win in Oshawa on Dec. 20th. He returned from the break to score his 18th goal of the season and tack on two assists in a 7-2 win in Kingston Dec. 28th, earning third star honours. Garreffa recorded his sixth multi-point performance in seven games on Sunday, collecting four assists for second star recognition in a 6-1 win over visiting Peterborough. It was Garreffa’s fourth four-point effort of the season.

A 20-year-old from Toronto, Ont., Garreffa has 46 points (18-28–46) over 22 games in his fifth OHL season. He joined the 67’s in mid-October following four seasons with the Kitchener Rangers who drafted him in the third round of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. The versatile forward has amassed 271 points (90-181–271) over 267 career regular season games. Garreffa attended rookie camp with the Los Angeles Kings in September. This marks the third time in his career that Garreffa has received OHL Player of the Week recognition.

Also considered for the award this week was Florida Panthers prospect Cole Schwindt of the Mississauga Steelheads who had six goals, three assists and nine points over four contests. Oshawa Generals overage forward Brett Neumann was also in the running having recorded five goals, four assists and nine points over four outings.

CANADA’S NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM SETS ROSTER

22 past and present CHL players to represent Canada at 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship

BRNO, Czech Republic – Following six days of pre-tournament training in Vienna, Austria and Brno, Czech Republic, Hockey Canada has finalized Canada’s National Junior Team roster for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.

The roster – which includes three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards – will look to build on Hockey Canada’s historical success at the tournament.

Among the athletes on the final roster are five returnees from the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver and Victoria, B.C. (Hayton, Lafrenière, McIsaac, Smith, Veleno), two players who won a silver medal with Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (Byfield, Drysdale) and five players yet to be selected in the NHL draft (Byfield, Daws, Drysdale, Lafrenière, Mercer).

“The management group and coaches have done a terrific job working with the players and finalizing the roster,” said Shawn Bullock, director of men’s national teams with Hockey Canada. “This team has a lot of skill, international experience and, most importantly, is a group of quality young men.”

Vaughn CHL Team of the Week

The Canadian Hockey League today announced the 13th edition of the Vaughn CHL Team of the Week for the 2019-20 season based on individual performances from Dec. 9-15.

Headlining the forward ranks is Medicine Hat Tigers rookie centre Cole Sillinger who wrapped up the week with 10 points counting one goal and nine assists across four appearances. That stretch included a career-high six-point performance for the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft first round pick and leading WHL rookie scorer against the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday in which Sillinger notched one goal plus five assists to guide his club to an 8-4 road victory and claim third-star recognition.

Also up front is Guelph Storm left-wing Pavel Gogolev who collected eight goals and one assist for nine points over four outings. Gogolev, who is currently riding a six-game point streak, put up his best showing of the week Tuesday against the Owen Sound Attack as he finished with a single-game high of four goals in the 4-3 road victory that earned him first-star honours.

Rounding out the forward ranks is Spokane Chiefs left-wing and Minnesota Wild draft pick Adam Beckman who finished the week with nine points counting six goals and three assists over a trio of appearances. Against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday, Beckman matched a career-high five-point performance in notching a hat-trick plus two assists to power his squad to a 5-2 road victory that saw him recognized as the game’s first star. For his efforts, Beckman was named the WHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week.

On the back end, Kelowna Rockets blue liner and Vegas Golden Knights prospect Kaedan Korczak wrapped up the week with two goals and three assists for five points across four outings. That stretch saw Korczak put up back-to-back multi-point efforts including a two-goal showing against younger brother Ryder and the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday that counted the overtime winner in the 5-4 road thriller in which he earned third-star recognition.

Rounding out the defensive side is Saint John Sea Dogs rearguard William Villeneuve who finished the week with five points counting two goals and three assists in three contests. Against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Friday, the 2020 NHL Draft prospect was a key performer as he tallied one goal and two assists to help power his side to a 6-3 road victory that also saw him earn third-star recognition.

Between the pipes, Kitchener Rangers netminder and Los Angeles Kings prospect Jacob Ingham won both of his appearances that saw him turn aside a combined 63 shots while surrendering a lone goal. His top performance came against the London Knights on Tuesday as he stopped all 28 shots to pick up his fourth career shutout and guide his club to a 4-0 victory. In all, Ingham wrapped up the week with a 0.50 goals-against average and .984 save percentage, helping him earn recognition as the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week.

There weren’t too many changes to the Week 4 edition of the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour Top 10 Rankings, but the Toronto Nationals did move back up into the seventh spot, pushing the Waterloo Wolves into eighth. The Mississauga Senators make their first appearance inside the Top 10 after being an honourable mention last week. The Sens are riding a four-game winning streak and own an 11-8-4 record for sixth in the GTHL standings.

40 Players Selected for 2020 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with National Hockey League Central Scouting announce the 40 players invited to compete in the 2020 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.


The 25th annual showcase of top CHL players eligible for the NHL Draft takes place on Thursday January 16, 2020, and is hosted by the Hamilton Bulldogs.  The 40 players selected were chosen by NHL clubs and feature talent from across the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.


“All 31 NHL clubs have a say in the player selection process and take great interest in this best-on-best showcase,” said Dan Marr, Director of NHL Central Scouting. “The Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game is a great opportunity for scouts and general managers to evaluate talent and we look forward to seeing which players will make their mark in Hamilton.”

Among the players named to the preliminary roster are Canadian National Junior Team members such as CHL top scorer and reigning Player of the Year Alexis Lafreniere of the Rimouski Oceanic, fellow forwards Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves and Dawson Mercer of the Drummondville Voltigeurs, defenceman Jamie Drysdale of the Erie Otters, and goaltender Nico Daws of the Guelph Storm.  Three more players including Cole Perfetti of the Saginaw Spirit, Connor Zary of the Kamloops Blazers, and defenceman Braden Schneider of the Brandon Wheat Kings will also compete after attending Canada’s Selection Camp.

31 of the CHL’s 60 member clubs are represented with a total of 17 OHL players from 13 different teams, 13 WHL players from 10 different teams, and 10 QMJHL players from eight different teams. Nine different teams have two players listed including Brandon, Drummondville, Kamloops, the Ottawa 67’s, Prince Albert Raiders, Shawinigan Cataractes, Soo Greyhounds, Sudbury, and the Windsor Spitfires.


19 of the players selected received ‘A’ ratings as first round candidates determined by NHL Central Scouting in their November Players to Watch list including 13 forwards and six defencemen.  17 players were given ‘B’ ratings including 11 forwards and six defencemen, while all four goaltenders were listed as ‘C’ rated prospects.

The 40 players will be divided into teams by NHL Central Scouting and announced along with coaching staffs in January.

12 CHL players from last year’s game in Red Deer were chosen in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft led by Saskatoon Blades forward Kirby Dach picked third overall and currently competing as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. In 24 years, a total of 329 CHL players from this event have been chosen by NHL clubs in the first round of the NHL Draft representing close to 45% of all players selected. Since the event was first introduced in 1996 the game has featured 14 players selected with the first overall pick in the NHL Draft including Nico Hischier (2017), Connor McDavid (2015), Aaron Ekblad (2014), Nathan MacKinnon (2013), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011), Taylor Hall (2010), John Tavares (2009), Steven Stamkos (2008), Patrick Kane (2007), Marc-Andre Fleury (2003), Rick Nash (2002), Vincent Lecavalier (1998), Joe Thornton (1997), and Chris Phillips (1996).

RANGERS’ JACOB INGHAM NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Los Angeles Kings prospect Jacob Ingham of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with a 2-0 record, 0.50 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and one shutout.

Ingham stopped 63 of the 64 shots he faced in victories over London and Guelph, extending the club’s current winning streak to nine consecutive games. He turned aside all 28 shots that came his way on Tuesday, recording his fourth career OHL shutout as the Rangers blanked the visiting Knights 4-0. Ingham followed up that first star performance by earning second star recognition in Saturday’s 6-1 road win over the Guelph Storm as he made 35 saves, securing Kitchener’s ninth straight victory. Ingham is now 6-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average and .945 save percentage in six games since returning from an injury that sidelined him for most of the month of November.

A 19-year-old native of Barrie, Ont., Ingham owns a 12-3-2-1 record with a 2.78 goals-against average and .922 save percentage over 18 games this season. The fourth-year netminder joined the Rangers this past offseason following three years spent with the Mississauga Steelheads who originally selected him in the second round (26th overall) of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. The 6-foot-4, 198Ib. puckstopper was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week was Guelph Storm scorer Pavel Gogolev who racked up eight goals and an assist over four games last week. Peterborough Petes rookie Mason McTavish was also productive, scoring five times over a pair of victories to become the CHL’s first rookie 20-goal scorer of the 2019-20 season.

10 OHL PLAYERS MOVE FORWARD WITH CANADA’S NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League is pleased to announce that 10 OHL players will be heading to Europe as part of Canada’s National Junior Team following cuts announced on Thursday as Selection Camp came to a close in Oakville, Ont.

OHL players on the 24-man roster include forwards Quinton Byfield (Sudbury Wolves), Ty Dellandrea (Flint Firebirds), Aidan Dudas (Owen Sound Attack), Liam Foudy (London Knights), Barrett Hayton (Arizona Coyotes/Soo Greyhounds), Connor McMichael (London Knights) and Akil Thomas (Niagara IceDogs), defencemen Kevin Bahl (Ottawa 67’s) and Jamie Drysdale (Erie Otters) as well as goaltender Nico Daws (Guelph Storm).

Of the 10 OHL players, Hayton, who has appeared in 14 games with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes this season, is the lone returning name from last year’s World Junior Championship in Vancouver, BC. Top 2020 NHL Draft prospects Byfield and Drysdale won silver together at this past summer’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup Tournament.

London Knights head coach Dale Hunter will lead Team Canada behind the bench joined by Ottawa 67’s bench boss Andre Tourigny who will serve as an assistant. Owen Sound Attack head coach Alan Letang will serve as a pre-scout coach.

“As with every year, there are difficult decisions to trim down our roster, but ultimately we believe this group will give us our best shot at a gold medal,” said Shawn Bullock, director of men’s national teams with Hockey Canada. “We will continue the process of building our team, and we look forward to an exciting World Juniors.”

Canada’s final 22-player roster does not need to be officially submitted to the International Ice Hockey Federation until Dec. 25.
