Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, January 7th, 2024.



Battalion’s Anthony Romani Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

North Bay Battalion forward Anthony Romani is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week for the second time this season, contributing four goals and two assists while registering a plus-4 rating in three games.

Romani scored a goal and added an assist on Thursday, being named the game’s second star as the Battalion defeated the Brantford Bulldogs 4-2. He found the scoresheet again on Friday, tallying a pair of goals in the Battalion’s 5-2 road win over the Ottawa 67’s. Romani closed out the weekend with a third consecutive multi-point contest, extending his current point streak to 15 games with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Romani has compiled 13 goals, 15 assists and 28 points throughout the course of his 15-game point streak that dates back to Nov. 25th.

An 18-year-old from Pickering, Ont., Romani ranks second among all OHL point producers this season, recording 61 points (31-30–61) through 38 outings as the Battalion own a record of 18-14-5-1. The 6-foot-1, 184Ib. right-wing was North Bay’s third-round (41st overall) pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 program. In 158 regular season games, Romani has put up 62 goals, 56 assists and 118 points. He’s reached the Eastern Conference Championship Series with the Battalion in each of the past two seasons, recording 12 points (9-3–12) across 33 career playoff games. Romani attended rookie camp with the Carolina Hurricanes this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, overage forward Connor Lockhart of the Oshawa Generals recorded six points (4-2–6) in four games. Sudbury Wolves forward Kocha Delic was also productive, recording five points (1-4–5) in a pair of wins last week.

Generals’ Jacob Oster Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the third time this season, playing to a 2-2 record with a 1.77 goals-against average, and .952 save percentage.

Making a total of 139 saves last week, Oster stopped 30 of the 33 shots that came his way on New Year’s Day as the Generals came up short against the first place Kitchener Rangers by a score of 3-2. Oster returned to the crease on Wednesday, making 42 saves to earn first star honours in a 1-0 loss at home to the Soo Greyhounds. He turned away another 32 shots on Saturday as the Generals earned their first win of the new year, defeating the Flint Firebirds 10-2. The 6-foot-3, 190lb. netminder closed out the weekend with a 35-save performance to earn first star honours on Sunday in Saginaw, helping the Generals defeat the Spirit by a score of 5-1.

A 19-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Oster has played to a 15-13-3-1 record this season, posting a 3.03 goals-against average, and .905 save percentage. He currently sits second in OHL minutes played (1,884) and saves (903) this season. Selected in the fifth-round (92nd overall) by the Guelph Storm in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the veteran goaltender has appeared in 115 career regular season contests, recording a 3.48 goals-against average and .887 save percentage over three seasons, going 48-44-8-4 in the process. Oster attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings last September.

Also considered for the award this week, Michael Simpson of the London Knights went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .943 save percentage, becoming the first goaltender to 20 wins with a league-low 2.73 goals-against average.

Knights’ Ruslan Gazizov Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Ruslan Gazizov of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, eight assists, and 11 points over three contests as the Knights earned six points last week.

Gazizov had a strong showing in Windsor on Thursday, registering four assists as the Knights defeated the Spitfires 6-2. The 5-foot-11, 185lb. forward found the scoresheet again on Friday, tallying a goal and four assists to earn first star honours in an 8-2 win over the Owen Sound Attack. Gazizov closed out the week with a pair of markers on Saturday including the game-tying goal and overtime winner, earning first star recognition as the Knights bounced back to defeat the Sudbury Wolves 4-3.

Selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Knights in the 2021 CHL Import Draft, the 19-year-old forward has recorded 34 points (12-22–34) through 32 outings this season, helping the Knights play to a record of 20-11-0-1, good for second in the Midwest Division. Gazizov has tallied 45 goals, 65 assists, and 110 points over 142 regular season games played in three seasons with London.

Also considered for the award this week, Peterborough Petes forward Jax Dubois scored four times and added three assists in three games played. Oshawa Generals overage forward Connor Lockhart was also productive, contributing six goals to three wins last week.

Generals’ Jacob Oster Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season, playing to a 3-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average, and .915 save percentage.

Oster backstopped the Generals to three straight wins to close out the first half of the season, beginning with 20 saves on Wednesday in a 6-2 win over the Mississauga Steelheads. Oster returned to the crease on Friday, making 23 saves as Oshawa defeated Central Division-leading Mississauga by a score of 7-3. The 6-foot-3, 190lb. netminder closed out the weekend with a 22-save performance on Saturday, helping Oshawa defeat rival Peterborough 5-1.

A 19-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Oster has played to a 13-10-3-1 record this season, along with a 3.14 goals-against average, and an .899 save percentage. Selected in the fifth round (92nd overall) by the Guelph Storm in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the veteran goaltender has appeared in 110 career regular season contests, recording a 3.53 goals-against average and .885 save percentage over three seasons, going 46-41-8-4 in the process. Oster attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings in September.

Also considered for the award this week, Michael Simpson of the London Knights went 2-0 with a 2.42 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. Charlie Schenkel of the Soo Greyhounds was also steady, going 2-0 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

Petes’ Connor Lockhart Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Vancouver Canucks prospect Connor Lockhart of the Peterborough Petes is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, posting four goals, one assist and five points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-1.

Lockhart pushed the Petes to the Eastern Conference Championship Series, scoring a hat trick as Peterborough defeated the Ottawa 67’s 5-4 in Game 6 of their second round series on Monday night. The 5-foot-9, 164lb. forward continued his scoring ways against North Bay on Friday, recording a goal and an assist as the Petes defeated the Battalion 3-2 in Game 1. Lockhart continues to excel on a line alongside Owen Beck and Chase Stillman as the Petes enter Tuesday’s Game 3 of their Conference Final series tied at one with the North Bay Battalion.

A 20-year-old from Kanata, Ont., Lockhart recorded 29 goals, 50 assists and 79 points in 66 games this season. He’s produced 154 points (61-93–154) over 187 career OHL regular season games between Peterborough and Erie since being selected by the Otters with the third overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. He’s currently produced 10 points (6-4–10) over 12 games in the 2023 OHL Playoffs. Lockhart was selected in the sixth round (178th overall) by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Petes teammate and Montreal Canadiens prospect Owen Beck was productive, recording one goal and four assists in three games, while Seattle Kraken prospect Ryan Winterton of the London Knights had five points (2-3–5) in two victories.

Knights’ Brett Brochu Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Brett Brochu of the London Knights is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the third time in the past four weeks, going 1-0 with a 0.62 goals-against average and .980 save percentage.

Brochu helped the Knights take a 2-0 series lead over the Sarnia Sting in the Western Conference Championship Series last week, turning aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced in a 4-1 win to earn first star honours on Friday. The 6-foot, 176lb. netminder stopped all 18 shots he faced in Sunday’s Game 2, leaving the game in the second period with an injury as the Knights went on to win by a score of 3-1.

A 20-year-old from Belle River, Ont., Brochu played to a 28-17-2-0 record with a 2.82 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 47 games this past season. He’ll graduate with 89 regular season career victories, the second-most in London Knights franchise history. He posted a 2.67 goals-against average and .910 save percentage over 132 career regular season games, and also set a new OHL record for wins by a rookie goaltender with 32 in 2019-20. The overage netminder is currently 9-1 with a 1.48 goals-against average and .943 save percentage with four shutouts over 11 games in the 2023 OHL Playoffs. Brochu was London’s sixth round (114th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He attended training camp with the Vancouver Canucks last October.

Also considered for the award this week, Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes went 2-1 with a 2.68 goals-against average and .928 save percentage, making 103 saves over three games played last week. Winnipeg Jets prospect Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion went 2-2 with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.

Petes’ Michael Simpson Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and .973 save percentage.

Helping Peterborough close out the 2022 calendar year with a pair of victories, Simpson turned aside 40 of the 41 shots he faced in a first star performance as the Petes defeated the Mississauga Steelheads 5-1 on Thursday. The six-foot-one, 198 lb. goaltender was back between the pipes on Sunday, backstopping the Petes to a 6-1 road victory over the Oshawa Generals where he made 33 saves for the win.

A 19-year-old from London, Ont., Simpson leads the OHL with a 2.57 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and two shutouts through 27 games, posting a record of 14-9-1-2. The second-year netminder played to a 20-18-3-1 mark in 2021-22, registering a 3.56 goals-against average and .891 save percentage. Simpson was a 10th round (193rd overall) pick of the Petes in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Also in the running for the award this week, London Knights netminder Brett Brochu turned aside 61 shots, going 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .953 save percentage. Arizona Coyotes prospect Anson Thornton of the Barrie Colts also went 2-0 with a 1.93 goals-against average, .949 save percentage and a shoutout victory.

Petes’ Tucker Robertson Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Seattle Kraken prospect Tucker Robertson of the Peterborough Petes is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording one goal, four assists and five points in a pair of victories.

Robertson got the Petes’ season off to a hot start recording his 50th OHL goal, 100th career point and the shootout game winner in a first star performance as the Petes defeated the Erie Otters 5-4 in their home opener. He followed that up with a three-assist effort on Saturday as the Petes defeated the defending champion Hamilton Bulldogs 5-3 at the Memorial Centre. Robertson excelled in the face-off circle, going a combined 39-for-59 (66%) on the weekend.

A 19-year-old native of Toronto, Robertson was a fourth round (123rd overall) pick of the Seattle Kraken following 41 goals, 40 assists and 81 points in 68 games last season. The former fourth round (72nd overall) pick by the Petes in 2019 has registered 50 goals, 54 assists and 104 points in 125 career regular season games in maroon and white.

Also given consideration for the award this week were Petes teammate and Vancouver Canucks prospect Connor Lockhart, who leads all OHL players with six points (1-5–6) on the young season. Fellow Seattle prospect Ty Nelson of the North Bay Battalion was also a standout, recording five points (1-4–5) in split decisions for the Troops.



Sting’s Ben Gaudreau Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

San Jose Sharks prospect Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 1.99 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.

Gaudreau was victorious on Friday in Kitchener, stopping 17 of the 20 shots he faced as the Sting defeated the Rangers 6-3. The 6-foot-2, 172Ib. goaltender returned to the crease on Saturday, stopping 22 shots in a 2-1 overtime win over the Windsor Spitfires, picking up second star recognition.

A 19-year-old native of Corbeil, Ont., Gaudreau is embarking on his third season in Sarnia after a strong sophomore season where he went 19-18-4-1 with a 3.71 goals-against average and .891 save percentage over 44 games. Selected in the third round (81st overall) by the San Jose Sharks in the 2021 NHL Draft, Gaudreau was originally Sarnia’s 1st round (7th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the North Bay Trappers 16U program. Over parts of three seasons, he’s 31-31-5-2 with a 3.88 goals-against average and .891 save percentage in 74 regular season appearances.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as Kingston Frontenacs netminder Ivan Zhigalov posted 61 saves in a pair of outings, recording a 2.03 goals-against average and .939 save percentage. Oshawa Generals goaltender Patrick Leaver went 2-0-0-1 on the weekend, posting a 2.92 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.

OHL ANNOUNCES ACADEMIC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR NOVEMBER

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Lawson Sherk of the Hamilton Bulldogs, Hunter Haight of the Barrie Colts, Connor Lockhart of the Erie Otters and Gavin Hayes of the Flint Firebirds have been named the OHL Academic Players of the Month for November.

Though the puck has yet to drop on the 2020-21 OHL Regular Season, players are striving for excellence in the classroom through their studies. The League continues to work with government and public health agencies to prepare a safe return to play with a targeted Regular Season start date of Thursday, February 4, 2021. Academic players of the month are listed in correspondence with their 2019-20 divisions. Details concerning the structure of 2020-21 team alignment will be made available upon release of the OHL Regular Season schedule.

Here’s a closer look at the OHL’s Academic Players of the Month for November:

East Division: Lawson Sherk of the Hamilton Bulldogs is being recognized as November’s East Division Academic Player of the Month. He achieved 100% in Grade 12 University Level Advanced Functions; one of few Ancaster High School students to have ever achieved the perfect grade. Sherk also scored the top mark in Grade 12 University Level Physics with 94% and earned a 93% in his Personal Life Management course.

Sherk’s teachers and coaches regularly compliment his work ethic, positive attitude and kindness and point out his perseverance and teamwork both in the classroom and on the ice. He is known around school as a mentor and a leader.

The 17-year-old Halton Hills, Ont. native put up 15 points (5-10—15) over 62 games in his rookie season with the Bulldogs. He was selected 40th overall by Hamilton in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection after a 50-point season (15-35—50) with the OMHA’s Halton Hurricanes.

Central Division: Barrie’s Hunter Haight is November’s Central Division Academic Player of the Month. Over his first term at Blyth Academy, he put up an impressive 98% in Grade 11 University Level Physics and 95% in Grade 12 Community Technology. Out of the 19 courses Haight has completed so far, he has yet to receive a grade lower than 90%.

Haight is described by his teachers as extremely focused and as someone who “continuously puts forth his best efforts both on and off the ice.” He was also recently recognized with the Emerging Leaders Award on account of his outstanding personal leadership, positive impact and contributions within the community.

The 9th overall 2020 OHL Priority Selection pick led the ALLIANCE U16 ranks with 32 goals last season and led his Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs to a league championship. Haight finished the 2019-20 season with 58 points (32-26—58) in 33 appearances and put up 26 points (11-15—26) in the playoffs.

Midwest Division: Connor Lockhart of the Erie Otters has been named the Midwest Division’s Academic Player of the Month for November after undertaking a full courseload that included Grade 11 Academic Math, Grade 12 Athletic Leadership, Grade 11 English, Grade 12 Nutrition and Grade 12 Personal Life Management.

Lockhart has been praised for fulfilling his course responsibilities at John McRae Secondary School and Blyth Academy before the start of the season so that he will have more time in his schedule for increased demands during his draft year. His ability to adapt to new ways of learning, time management, self-motivation and prioritization during this difficult time have also been praised, as well as his decision to front load his schedule to maximize his free time while maintaining his workouts and pre-season preparation.

The 17-year-old forward amassed 27 points (9-18—27) over 57 contests in his rookie campaign with the Otters following a 79-point (30-49—79) production with the Kanata Lasers U18 in 2018-19.

West Division: Flint Firebirds rookie Gavin Hayes is the West Division’s Academic Player of the Month for November. Hayes earned an 88% in U.S. History, 84% in Grade 11 English and 83% in Algebra II at SOAR Academic Institute.

Drafted 16th overall by the Firebirds in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, Hayes led the High-Performance Hockey League in goals (16) and points (33) over 21 appearances with the Detroit Compuware U15 AAA squad.

A total of 334 graduates utilized their OHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across North America during the 2019-20 academic year, with a total contribution by teams of over $3 million.  Over the past 10 seasons, OHL Scholarship payments have totalled more than $25 million.

Hockey Canada Releases Under-18 Invites

The 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the precursor to the 2021 National Hockey League Draft, was cancelled because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, but that didn’t stop Hockey Canada from naming the 46 players that would have been invited to the selection camp.

Hockey Canada released that list today and it includes 12 Ontario Hockey League players with a possible 13th, depending on whether goaltender Matteo Drobac makes the Hamilton Bulldogs roster when the 2020-2021 season takes place.

Five of the six players on our Players to Watch List  have made the cut with Russian Daniil Chayka the only exception, so of course, he’s not eligible.
