KNIGHTS’ DENVER BARKEY AWARDED DAN SNYDER MEMORIAL TROPHY AS OHL HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) today announced that London Knights captain Denver Barkey is this year’s recipient of the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the OHL Humanitarian of the Year.

Through his Barkey’s Buds program in partnership with the London Knights Fan Club, the Philadelphia Flyers prospect led a cause that resulted in the donation of more than 1,500 pieces of hockey equipment to children with learning, emotional and social disabilities through the George Bray Sports Association. More than 500 tickets were provided through the Barkey’s Buds initiative so that London-area children and their families could come and watch a Knights game. Through equipment donations, 10 children were able to register in an organized hockey program for the first time.

“It’s such an honour to receive this award,” said Barkey. ” Ever since I came to London as a 16-year-old the support and passion from the fans was something I noticed right away. Now being in my last year, to be able to start Barkey’s Buds and give back to the community that has treated me and my teammates so well was the least I could do. It’s really special for me, my family and the fan club to see so many kids and their families get a chance to play and watch the game we love.”

In addition to his work with Barkey’s Buds, the fourth-year Knights forward participated in monthly visits to Children’s Hospital in London and took part in several school visits to speak with students about the importance of teamwork, healthy living and commitment to their studies. He also attended practices with local minor hockey teams, providing a mentorship presence on the ice.

“It’s a proud moment for Denver and his family and for the London Knights organization,” said Knights Vice President and General Manager Mark Hunter. “Denver is a high character young man and for him to take on this community service is something that we take pride in, giving back to the London area. Denver along with Knights Fan Club President Sav Neth and our fans have done a tremendous job this season.”

Barkey finished his fourth OHL season with the Knights registering 25 goals, 57 assists and 82 points over 50 games with a plus/minus rating of plus-46. The 20-year-old from Newmarket, Ont. has compiled 258 points (89-169–258) over 228 career regular season games since being London’s first round (16th overall) pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. Barkey helped the Knights hoist the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions last spring, producing 27 points (6-21–27) over 18 games. He was Philadelphia’s third round (95th overall) pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and signed with the Flyers on March 3, 2024.

Each year the OHL awards a player that has demonstrated outstanding qualities as a positive role model in the community with the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy. The Ontario Hockey League Board of Governors announced in 2004 that the OHL Humanitarian of the Year award would be named in recognition of the former Owen Sound Platers captain, who was twice named his team’s Humanitarian of the Year in recognition of his tremendous efforts in supporting community activities.

Barkey follows Jason Metcalfe (1998) as the second player in London Knights history to win the award. Other recent OHL recipients include Mason Vaccari of the Kingston Frontenacs (2023-24), Dalyn Wakely of the North Bay Battalion (2022-23) and Mark Woolley of the Owen Sound Attack (2021-22).

Barkey finished as this year’s award recipient followed by finalists Carson Woodall of the Windsor Spitfires and Nic Sima of the Saginaw Spirit.

Barkey will be formally presented with the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy at the 2025 OHL Awards Ceremony this June at The Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Knights’ Denver Barkey Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering four goals, three assists and seven points in a pair of victories.

The Knights captain played a pivotal role in securing a 2-0 second round series lead over the Erie Otters last week. He recorded a hat trick and was named first star in Thursday’s 6-3 win, before adding a goal and three assists to earn first star honours once again in Saturday’s 7-2 victory.

Selected 16th overall by the London Knights in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, the soon-to-be 20-year-old from Newmarket, Ont. recorded 82 points (25-57-82) in 50 regular season games, and currently ranks second in playoff scoring with 19 points (9-10-19) through six contests in the 2024-25 postseason. Now in his fourth season with the Knights, Barkey has amassed 258 points (89-169-258) over 228 career regular season games, along with 72 points (27-45-72) in 49 playoff appearances. The 5-foot-10, 171-pound forward was a key part of the Knights’ OHL championship run last season. He was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round (95th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Also considered for this week’s award, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect and Knights forward Easton Cowan registered seven points (2-5-7) across the two victories. Vancouver Canucks prospect Riley Patterson contributed three goals and three assists to help the Barrie Colts take a 2-0 series lead, while Chicago Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis of the Brantford Bulldogs stood out with six points (4-2-6) in a pair of wins.

Colts’ Sam Hillebrandt Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Sam Hillebrandt of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, following a pair of wins with a 3.00 goals-against average and .928 save percentage.

Stopping a total of 77 shots last week, Hillebrandt backstopped the Colts to a 2-0 series lead over the Kingston Frontenacs. He turned aside 38 of 40 shots on Thursday, earning first star honours in Barrie’s 6-2 win. The 6-foot-1, 170lb. netminder returned to the crease on Saturday with a 39-save performance as the Colts skated to a 7-4 victory.

A 20-year-old from Riverview, Florida, Hillebrandt posted a 21-13-0-2 record during the regular season, along with a 3.16 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. He’s appeared in five playoff contests so far in 2024-25, maintaining an undefeated 5-0 record with a 3.20 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. Originally from Michigan, Hillebrandt played in the Detroit Little Caesars AAA program before relocating to Florida. He captured gold with the U.S. National Junior Team at both the 2024 and 2025 World Juniors. The Colts signed Hillebrandt as a free agent ahead of the 2022-23 season following his time with the Florida Alliance North 16U program in 2021-22. Across 76 career regular season OHL appearances, he holds a 38-29-2-2 record with one shutout, a 3.41 goals-against average, and a .900 save percentage.

Also considered for the award this week, Joey Costanzo of the Windsor Spitfires played to a 2-0 record along with a 1.00 goals-against average and .947 save percentage, while Austin Elliott of the London Knights was also a standout, going 2-0 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .902 save percentage.

Spitfires’ Andrew Robinson Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Andrew Robinson of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Rookie of the Week, registered a goal in a pair of victories last week.

Helping the Spitfires take a 2-0 series lead over the Kitchener Rangers, the 6-foot, 185lb. defenceman scored his first career OHL goal on Thursday and earned second star honours in a 5-1 win.

Selected by Windsor in the third round (58th overall) of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA program, the 17-year-old from Oakville, Ont. native appeared in four regular season games with the Spitfires this season. He spent the majority of 2024-25 with the OJHL’s Georgetown Raiders, tallying three goals, 31 assists and 34 points in 53 games played.

Otters’ Pano Fimis Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Pano Fimis of the Erie Otters is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, three assists and eight points in two victories.

Helping the Otters take a 2-0 series lead over the Saginaw Spirit in Round 1 of the OHL Playoffs, Fimis scored twice on Thursday night to earn first-star honours in an 8-5 victory. He found the scoresheet again on Saturday, recording a club playoff record six points including a hat trick and three assists to once again earn first-star honours as Erie secured a 9-5 road win.

The 20-year-old overage centreman recorded 32 goals, 54 assists, and 86 points in 68 games played in Erie this season, also leading the league in the faceoff circle with a 63.2 percent success rate. Originally selected second overall by the Niagara IceDogs in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the Richmond Hill, Ont. native has appeared in 245 regular season contests between the IceDogs and the Otters, tallying 87 goals, 166 assists and 253 points.

Also considered for the award this week, Los Angeles Kings prospect Liam Greentree of the Windsor Spitfires registered seven points (3-4-7) in two wins, while Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights tallied three goals and four assists in a pair of victories.

Bulldogs’ Ryerson Leenders Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Buffalo Sabres prospect Ryerson Leenders of the Brantford Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the fourth time this season, going 2-0 including a shutout, along with a 1.50 goals-against average, and a .944 save percentage.

Helping Brantford take a 2-0 series lead over North Bay in Round 1 of the OHL Playoffs, Leenders made 51 saves last week. He stopped 30 of 33 shots on Friday as the Bulldogs defeated the Battalion 6-3. On Sunday, he earned first-star honours with his first career OHL playoff shutout, making 21 saves in a 3-0 victory.

An 18-year-old from Nanticoke, Ont., Leenders played to a 31-14-3-0 regular season record, with a 3.11 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 48 games played. The former second-round (32nd overall) pick by Mississauga in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection is now in his third OHL season, owning a career mark of 67-46-10-0 with a 3.21 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and four shutouts over 129 regular season games. Leenders was selected in the seventh round (202nd overall) by Buffalo in the 2024 NHL Draft last summer.

Also considered for the award this week, Joey Costanzo of the Windsor Spitfires went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .927 save percentage, while Charlie Schenkel of the Kingston Frontenacs was also a standout in the crease, going 2-0 along with a 1.68 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.

Spitfires’ Ethan Garden Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Windsor Spitfires forward Ethan Garden is the OHL Rookie of the Week, registering a goal, two assists and three points in two games played.

Helping Windsor take a 2-0 series lead over the Soo Greyhounds in Round 1 of the 2025 OHL Playoffs, Garden recorded an assist in Thursday’s 7-2 home win. The Belleville, MI native found the scoresheet again on Saturday, adding a goal and an assist to earn third-star honours in a 7-1 victory.

Selected by the Spitfires in the ninth round (164th overall) of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the Detroit Little Caesars U15 AAA program, the 5-foot-8, 166lb. forward registered six goals, eight assists, and 14 points in 55 regular season contests.

Also considered for the award this week, Graydon Jones of the Saginaw Spirit recorded three assists in two games played.

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, January 12, 2025.



Wolves’ Kocha Delic Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Sudbury Wolves overage forward Kocha Delic is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, three assists and eight points in three contests last week.

Delic opened the week with a four-point performance on Thursday, recording a hat-trick and an assist to earn first star honours in a 7-1 win over the Soo Greyhounds. He continued his strong play on Friday, scoring a goal in a 5-4 loss to the Niagara IceDogs. Delic wrapped up the week with a goal and two assists on Sunday, helping the Wolves secure a high-scoring 10-6 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs.

A 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., Delic has recorded 49 points (20-29–49) in 37 games this season, securing the third consecutive 20+ goal season of his career. Selected by Sudbury in the second round (28th overall) of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the 5-foot-11, 198lb. centreman has amassed 211 points (89-122–211) over 205 career regular-season games across four seasons with the Wolves.

Also considered for the award this week, Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights recorded seven points (3-4-7) in a pair of wins. Top 2025 NHL Draft-eligible prospect Porter Martone of the Brampton Steelheads was also a standout, tallying a goal, six assists and seven points in three games played.

Petes’ Easton Rye Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Easton Rye of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0-0-1 with a 2.91 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in three outings.

Making 92 saves last week, Rye stopped 23 of 25 shots on Thursday, backstopping the Petes to a 5-2 win over the Barrie Colts. He returned to the crease on Saturday, making 39 saves and stopping two shootout attempts in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Brantford Bulldogs. Rye wrapped up the week with a 30-save performance on Sunday, helping Peterborough secure a 5-2 victory against the Niagara IceDogs.

The 18-year-old hometown product has appeared in 16 games for the Petes this season, posting a 7-7-1-1 record with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. Over two OHL seasons, Rye has played in 25 games, compiling an 8-11-1-1 record with a 4.03 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage. The 6-foot, 196lb. netminder was selected by Peterborough in the fifth round (89th overall) of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection and spent the majority of 2023-24 with the PJCHL’s Lakefield Chiefs.

Also considered for the award this week, Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals was excellent, going 2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Storm’s Lev Katzin Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Guelph Storm forward Lev Katzin is the OHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, recording one goal, five assists and six points over three games played.

Katzin kicked off the week with an assist on Wednesday as the Storm came up short in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Erie Otters. He added two more assists on Friday, contributing to the Storm’s 6-4 victory over the Flint Firebirds. The 5-foot-8, 176lb. forward capped off the week with a standout performance on Saturday, tallying a goal and two assists to earn first star honours in a 4-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds.

A 17-year-old forward from Thornhill, Ont., Katzin joined the Storm in late November after spending two seasons with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, where he recorded 39 points (12-27–39) in 66 games. In his first 16 games with the Storm, Katzin has tallied seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points, leading all OHL rookies with 1.5 points-per-game. He was part of the gold medal-winning Team Canada White at the 2023 U17 World Hockey Challenge in Prince Edward Island. During his OHL draft year, Katzin excelled with the GTHL’s Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA program and was selected by the Storm in the fifth round (94th overall).

Also considered for the award this week, Chase Reid of the Soo Greyhounds contributed five assists in three contests, while Katzin’s Storm teammate Daniil Skvortsov tallied a goal and three helpers from the back end.

Spitfires’ Liam Greentree Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Los Angeles Kings prospect Liam Greentree of the Windsor Spitfires is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week for the second time this season, registering five goals, seven assists and 12 points over four victories.

Greentree captained the League-leading Spitfires to a four-win week, starting with a goal and three assists in a 6-4 victory over the Flint Firebirds on New Year’s Eve, earning first star honours. On Thursday, he recorded a career-high five-point game with a goal and four assists to claim second star honours in a 9-5 win against the Guelph Storm. Greentree continued his strong play on Saturday, earning first star honours with two goals in a 7-5 triumph over the Erie Otters. He capped off the week on Sunday by netting the overtime winner in a 4-3 victory over the Niagara IceDogs, earning first star honours once again and sealing a perfect week for the Spitfires.

A recently turned 19-year-old left-winger from Oshawa, Ont., Greentree leads all OHL players in points this season with 68 (29-39–68) in 38 games. Drafted 26th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2024 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 216lb. forward has tallied 203 points (90-113-203) in 163 regular season games for Windsor. He was selected by the Spitfires in the second round (34th overall) of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Spitfires teammate and Washington Capitals prospect Ilya Protas posted five goals and five assists in the four wins. Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights was also a standout, recording 11 points (3-8-11) in three contests.

Rangers’ Jackson Parsons Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the fourth time this season, going 3-0-0-0, along with a 1.30 goals-against average, and a .948 save percentage.

Turning aside 73 shots last week, Parsons made 23 saves on New Year’s Eve, defeating the North Bay Battalion 5-2 to close out the year. He followed that up on Thursday by stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced, earning first star honours in a 2-1 overtime win against the Brantford Bulldogs. Parsons capped off the week with another victory on Friday, turning aside 23 of 24 shots to earn second star honours in a 3-1 win over the Erie Otters.

A 20-year-old from Embrun, Ont., Parsons is 23-6-1-0 on the season, leading all OHL netminders with a 2.03 goals-against average and ranking second in save percentage at .928, along with four shutouts over 30 games played. The former third-round pick (53rd overall) by Kitchener in 2020 is now in his fourth OHL season, boasting a career record of 60-38-5-0 with a 2.95 goals-against average, .903 save percentage, and eight shutouts over 108 regular season games. Parsons is committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Clarkson University next season.

Also considered for the award this week, Zachary Jovanovski of the Guelph Storm was excellent, going 1-1 including a shutout with a 1.97 goals-against average and .938 save percentage, while Trenten Bennett of the Owen Sound Attack was also a standout in the crease, going 1-2 including a shutout, with a 1.68 goals-against average and .944 save percentage.

Spitfires’ Ethan Belchetz Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Ethan Belchetz of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, recording three goals, four assists, and seven points in four victories.

Belchetz kicked off the week with a pair of assists on Thursday as the Spitfires secured a 9-5 home victory over the Guelph Storm. He remained productive on Saturday, picking up an assist before scoring the third period game winner to earn third star recognition in a 7-5 win against the Erie Otters. The 6-foot-5, 226lb. forward from Oakville, Ont. capped off the week with another goal on Sunday, helping the Western Conference-leading Spitfires edge the Niagara IceDogs 4-3 in overtime. Windsor now boasts a 29-7-2-1 record this season.

Selected first overall by Windsor in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the Oakville Rangers U16 AAA program, the 2024 OHL Cup champion and MVP is excelling in his rookie campaign. He ranks second among all OHL rookies with 26 points (12-14–26) over 30 games. Belchetz won gold representing Canada White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November, recording five points (4-1–5) in as many games.

Also considered for the award this week, Brooks Rogowski of the Oshawa Generals scored twice and added two assists over four games played. Knights’ Denver Barkey Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, five assists, and seven points as the Knights won all three of their games last week.

Barkey had a strong start to the week on Thursday, registering three assists as the Knights defeated the Windsor Spitfires in a high-scoring 10-7 road win. The 5-foot-9, 154lb. right-winger found the scoresheet again on Friday, tallying a pair of helpers along with the game-winning goal as London defeated the Owen Sound Attack 5-4 in overtime. Barkey closed out the Knights’ perfect weekend with his 11th goal of the season on Saturday as London blanked the Guelph Storm 4-0 at home.

An 18-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., Barkey ranks first among Knights point-producers, recording 11 goals, 15 assists, and 26 points over 18 games this season. Philadelphia’s third round (95th overall) pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has recorded 100 points (40-60-100) in 132 career OHL regular season games with the Knights after being chosen 16th overall by the club in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. Barkey was a big part of London’s Western Conference title efforts last spring, producing 24 points (11-13–24) in 20 playoff games.

Also considered for the award this week, draft-eligible forward Liam Greentree of the Windsor Spitfires scored three times and added four assists in three appearances. Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Luca Pinelli of the Ottawa 67’s was also productive, contributing a total of four goals and two helpers.

Rangers’ Jackson Parsons Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a 3-0 record including two shutouts, with a 1.00 goals-against average, and .971 save percentage.

Stopping a total of 101 shots last week, Parsons turned aside all 30 that came his way on Wednesday as Kitchener blanked the Owen Sound Attack 5-0. The 6-foot-2, 202lb. netminder was back in the crease on Friday, turning aside all 39 shots he faced to earn first star honours and his second shutout of the weekend as the Rangers built on their win streak with a 4-0 win over the Peterborough Petes. Parsons closed out Kitchener’s perfect week on Sunday, stopping 32 of the 35 shots sent his way as the Rangers defeated the visiting Soo Greyhounds 5-3. Parsons’ shutout streak lasted a span of 181 minutes and 25 seconds.

Turning 19 later this month, Parsons, who is from Embrun, Ont., has come back strong from missing much of 2022-23 to injury, playing to a 10-4 record along with a 2.33 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and league-leading four shutouts so far this season. Selected in the third round (53rd overall) by Kitchener in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, Parsons has appeared in 41 career regular season contests, recording a 3.38 goals-against average and .900 save percentage over three seasons.

Also considered for the award this week, Andrew Oke of the Saginaw Spirit went 3-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average and .940 save percentage as the Spirit ran their winning streak to five games. Sam Hillebrandt of the Barrie Colts continued his strong start to the season, going 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .955 save percentage.

Obviously, the first thing that will come to mind is “5’9” – 154-pound NHL player?” The scouting community raises the same question. I will say this: You will be hard pressed to find a handful of players that work harder than London Knights’ forward Denver Barkey in the entire draft class, not just the OHL.

Barkey is quick, but not a speedster. He is like the Tasmanian Devil in pursuit of the puck. He is often the first man in on the forecheck causing havoc and usually forcing the opposition to react faster than they’d like and turning over the puck.

Barkey is versatile and can play all three forward positions. He can also play in any situation. On the powerplay where he has more space, Barkey is dangerous, able to make tape-to-tape passes through sticks and bodies look easy. On the penalty kill, he uses that same tenacity in puck pursuit to break up plays.

Barkey is an extremely intelligent player who anticipates well and reads and reacts well. There are issues, here, but I don’t believe size is one of them (how often do we have to be proven wrong before we admit it).

For starters, I wish Barkey was faster. Yes, he is quick, but doesn’t possess the speed you’d expect out of a smaller player. Secondly, he really needs to work on his shot. Maybe he can gain a little more power behind it when he adds some muscle, but for now, it’s a work in progress. He’s not going to beat many goaltenders at the next level with it.

The good thing is that his play on the ice is contagious. When teammates watch him go out and leave everything on the ice, they usually follow suit. All things considered; Barkey can fill a third line role if he maximizes his potential. We love how Dale Hunter gets the most out of his players here and how he brings them along in their development.

That’s a plus for Barkey.

Knights’ Ryan Winterton Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Seattle Kraken prospect Ryan Winterton of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, posting five goals, one assist and six points in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-5.

Helping London skate to a 4-2 series win over the Sarnia Sting to capture the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference champions last week, Winterton started things with a goal in a 5-2 road loss on Tuesday night. He went on to record another goal the following night as the Knights fell 6-3. Helping London rebound back at home on Friday, the 6-foot-2, 190lb. forward recorded a pair of goals in the 5-2 victory. Winterton closed out the series with a goal and an assist on Sunday, stretching his current point streak to eight games as the Knights punched their ticket to the OHL Championship Series with a 5-1 win over the Sting.

A 19-year-old from Whitby, Ont., Winterton recorded 12 goals, 24 assists and 36 points in 34 games this season. He’s produced 105 points (44-61–105) over 124 career OHL regular season games between London and Hamilton since being selected by the Bulldogs with the eighth overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. He’s currently produced 10 points (6-4–10) over 12 games in the 2023 OHL Playoffs. Winterton was selected in the third round (67th overall) by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, Knights teammate and 2023 NHL Draft eligible Denver Barkey was productive, recording three goals and three assists in four games, while Anaheim Ducks prospect Sasha Pastujov of the Sarnia Sting had eight points (2-6–8) in four outings.

Battalion’s Dom DiVincentiis Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Winnipeg Jets prospect Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a 2-2 record including a goals-against average of 2.75 and a save percentage of .927.

DiVincentiis helped the Battalion play to a 2-2 mark against the Peterborough Petes in the Eastern Conference Championship Series last week, beginning with a 40-save performance in a 3-2 road loss on Tuesday. DiVincentiis stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced in Wednesday’s Game 4, defeating the Petes 5-2. He returned home to block 22 of the 24 shots that came his way in a 6-2 win on Saturday, before the 6-foot-2, 190lb. netminder would close out the week in Peterborough, stopping 40 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss in Sunday’s Game 6.

A 19-year-old native of Bolton, Ont., DiVincentiis played to a 36-9-2-0 record with a 2.33 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 48 games this past season to earn the Jim Rutherford Trophy as the OHL’s Goaltender of the Year. He was the recipient of the OHL’s F.W. ‘Dinty’ Moore Trophy in 2021-22, posting a league-low 2.59 goals-against average among rookies to go with a 14-8-0-1 record and .907 save percentage. DiVincentiis was selected in the seventh round (207th overall) by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2022 NHL Draft.  He’s a former sixth round (116th overall) pick by the Battalion in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

OHL ANNOUNCES ACADEMIC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Denver Barkey of the London Knights, Kieron Walton of the Sudbury Wolves, Brad Gardiner of the Ottawa 67’s and Alex Kostov of the Soo Greyhounds have been named Academic Players of the Month for October.

East Division: Ottawa 67’s forward Brad Gardiner is the OHL East Division Academic Player of the Month for October.

Gardiner, who was also named East Division Academic Player of the Month in February 2022, is achieving an 89.5 percent average in grade 12 university-level Advanced Functions, Business Management and Elite Athlete at Blyth Academy The Glebe. He is on track to graduate a semester early due to his conscientious work ethic and perseverance at carrying both spring and summer courses.

“The 67’s organization continues to be impressed by Brad’s ability to balance his on and off ice responsibilities”, said 67’s General Manager James Boyd. “Brad is a diligent student who continues to impress with his development on and off of the ice.”

The 17-year-old from Aurora, Ont. has played 11 games this season, recording six goals and three assists for a total of nine points. The son of former NHL forward Bruce Gardiner, Gardiner put up seven points (3-4–7) in his rookie season with the 67’s. He was Ottawa’s third round (40th overall) pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.

Central Division: Sudbury Wolves rookie forward Kieron Walton is the OHL Central Division Academic Player of the Month for October.

Walton is currently achieving high grades in Entrepreneurship, World History, Co-op, and World Religions at St. Charles College. Walton’s teachers have described him as a student that shows positive initiative and is a cooperative team member in the classroom.

“Kieron is an excellent student, a great young player and an outstanding person”, said Wolves academic advisor Gord Ewin.

The 16-year-old from Toronto, Ont. has played 11 games this season, recording three goals and one assist for a total of four points. The 6-foot-6, 203Ib. left-winger was selected in the second round (28th overall) by the Wolves in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.

Midwest Division: London Knights draft-eligible forward Denver Barkey is the OHL Midwest Division Academic Player of the Month for October.

Barkey is currently achieving an 87 percent average in English, a 95 percent average in Recreation Leadership, an 80 percent average in World History, and a 95 percent average in Elite Athlete at Catholic Central High School.

“Denver is an exemplary student-athlete,” said Knights academic advisor Wendy Glover. “He understands the demands of the classroom, and not only meets them but also exceeds them. He exemplifies the academic and learning skills that Ontario students are encouraged to demonstrate such as: responsibility, initiative, collaboration, self-regulation and independent work. He demonstrates the behavior that the London Knights and OHL would be proud of.”

“Not only does Denver model appropriate behavior in the classroom, he also made a commitment to support the local and school community,” said Knights General Manager Mark Hunter. “He attends various other school sports or community events/fundraisers. In doing so, he clearly demonstrates a commitment to the concept that he values the contributions and lives of other students and community members, as well as his teammates.”

The Newmarket, Ont. native has played 11 games this season, recording three goals and eight assists for the Knights. His rookie season in 2021-22 included 15 points (7-8–15) over 53 contests. London selected Barkey in the first round (16th overall) of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.

West Division: Soo Greyhounds rookie forward Alex Kostov is the OHL West Division Academic Player of the Month for October.

Kostov has earned an overall average of 91 percent to date, including marks of 100 percent in Advanced Biology, a 95 percent average in Leadership, an 82-percentage average in Functions, and a 90 percent average in Culinary Arts at Superior Heights Secondary School.

“Alex is highly respected by his classmates, teachers and school staff,” said Greyhounds academic advisors Jerry Bumbacco and Mary Lynne Lukenda. “We are looking forward to following Alex’s academics and on-ice achievements as he progresses as a valuable member of the Soo Greyhounds.”

The rookie from Mississauga, Ont. has appeared in eight games this season, recording two assists. Kostov was selected in the third round (58th overall) by the Hounds in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.
 

The OHL continues to produce student-athletes that move on to both professional and U SPORTS men’s hockey endeavours.

A total of 349 graduates utilized their OHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across North America during the 2021-22 academic year, with a total contribution by teams of over $3.5 million. Over the past 10 seasons, OHL Scholarship payments have totalled more than $25 million.

A total of 217 OHL Alumni were included on U SPORTS men’s hockey rosters to open the 2022-23 season.
