Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, December 11, 2023.



Bulldogs’ Nick Lardis Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis of the Brantford Bulldogs is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording five goals, two assists, and seven points over three contests as the Bulldogs earned five of a possible six points.

Lardis had a strong showing in Peterborough on Thursday, registering a goal against his former club as the Bulldogs defeated the Petes 4-2. The 5-foot-11, 171lb. forward found the scoresheet again on Friday, tallying a goal and an assist as the Bulldogs suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Lardis closed out the week with his first career OHL hat trick along with an assist on Saturday. He scored the overtime winner, earning first star honours as the Bulldogs bounced back, defeating the Rangers 5-4 in extra time.

An 18-year-old from Oakville, Ont., Lardis has recorded 35 points (23-12-35) through 28 outings this season as the Bulldogs own a record of 14-9-5-1. Originally selected sixth overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection from the Oakville Rangers U16 program, Lardis has tallied 78 goals, 59 assists, and 137 points over 160 regular season games between the Petes and the Bulldogs. Lardis was selected in the third round (67th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Also considered for the award this week, overage forward Jack Beck of the Soo Greyhounds scored three times and added four assists to help the Greyhounds earn six points. Oliver Peer of the Windsor Spitfires was also productive, contributing a total of three goals and four helpers to a two-win weekend.

67’s’ Max Donoso Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Max Donoso of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after he went 2-0, posting a 1.51 goals-against average and .957 save percentage in three appearances last week.

Stopping a total of 88 shots last week, Donoso turned aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced on Wednesday as the 67’s defeated the Oshawa Generals 3-2 in overtime. Donoso entered the game to begin the second period of Friday’s matchup against the Peterborough Petes, stopping 17 of the 18 shots that came his way as the 67’s fell by a score of 5-2. He returned to the crease on Sunday afternoon in Peterborough, earning first star honours with 39 saves in a 2-1 win over the Petes. Sunday’s win was the 50th of Donoso’s OHL career, making him the 10th goaltender in 67’s franchise history to reach the milestone.

A 20-year-old from Windsor, Ont., Donoso has appeared in 18 games this season, playing to a 2.83 goals-against average to go with a 9-6-1-0 record, .909 save percentage and one shutout. The 6-foot-1, 185Ib. netminder was the 67’s fifth round (98th overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the Windsor Jr. Spitfires U16 program. He owns a career regular season mark of 50-25-2-7 with a 2.77 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and four shutouts in 92 contests.

Also considered for the award this week, Ben Gaudreau of the Erie Otters went 2-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, and .961 save percentage as Erie defeated Niagara and Guelph. Ian Michelone of the Windsor Spitfires also secured a pair of wins, recording a 2.00 goals-against average along with a .945 save percentage as the Spits defeated Barrie and Flint.

67’s’ Luca Pinelli Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

2023 NHL Draft prospect Luca Pinelli of the Ottawa 67’s is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, four assists and seven points in three playoff contests along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Helping Ottawa skate to a 4-1 series win over the Oshawa Generals, Pinelli started the week with a pair of assists in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Generals on Tuesday night. Pinelli went on to pick-up first star honours on Thursday, recording a four-point night with a pair of goals and assists as the 67’s blanked Oshawa 9-0. The 5-foot-9, 165lb. forward went on to score the game-winning goal on Saturday, punching Ottawa’s ticket to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals with a 4-2 win over the Generals.

An 18-year-old from Stoney Creek, Ont., Pinelli leads the 67’s in playoff points with five goals, seven assists and 12 points (5-7-12) over five games played. Pinelli recorded 29 goals, 34 assists and 63 points (29-34-63) in 67 games as a sophomore this past season. Selected in the second round (28th overall) by Ottawa in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 program, the left-winger recorded 36 points (14-22-36) in his first season with the 67’s in 2021-22. Pinelli attended the CHL Top Prospects game in January and was listed as the 49th-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s midseason rankings.

Also considered for the award this week, Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov put up eight assists (0-8–8) in four games for the North Bay Battalion as fellow teammate and Dallas Stars prospect Kyle McDonald also had success, recording six goals, one assist and seven points as the Troops move on to the second round of the OHL Playoffs.

Knights’ Brett Brochu Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Brett Brochu of the London Knights is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0 with a 0.90 goals-against average, .966 save percentage and a shutout in two outings last week.

Brochu helped the Knights to a 4-0 first round series win over the Owen Sound Attack last week. The overage netminder turned aside 34 of the 36 shots he faced on Tuesday night as London defeated Owen Sound 3-2 in overtime. He posted his second shutout of the series on Thursday, stopping all 23 shots he faced as the Knights blanked the Attack 5-0, clinching their spot in the Western Conference Semi-Finals against the rival Kitchener Rangers.

A 20-year-old from Belle River, Ont., Brochu owned a 28-17-2-0 record with a 2.82 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 47 games played this past season. The reigning Jim Rutherford OHL Goaltender of the Year Award recipient will graduate with 89 career victories, the second-most in London Knights franchise history. He posted a 2.67 goals-against average and .910 save percentage over 132 career regular season games, and also set a new OHL record for wins by a rookie goaltender with 32 in 2019-20. Brochu was London’s sixth round (114th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He attended training camp with the Vancouver Canucks this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, Ottawa 67’s netminder Max Donoso went 2-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, a .969 save percentage and a shutout. Winnipeg Jets prospect Dom DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion played to a 3-1 mark, posting a 2.27 goals-against average, a .937 save percentage and a shutout last week.

OHL ANNOUNCES 2022-23 REGULAR SEASON AWARD WINNERS

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced recipients of the League’s annual regular season awards.

Hamilton Spectator Trophy (Best Record During the Regular Season) – Ottawa 67’s
The Ottawa 67’s set new franchise records on the final weekend of the season, finishing with 51 wins and 107 points atop the OHL standings.

The Hamilton Spectator Trophy is their sixth, following past regular season titles in 2020, 2019, 1997, 1982 and 1978.

The 51-12-3-2 67’s finished-out the season surrendering a League-low 171 goals while boasting the OHL’s best home record, going 29-4-0-1 at TD Place. Defending OHL Playoff MVP Logan Morrison led the club in scoring, recording 94 points (40-54–94) over 56 games.

The Hamilton Spectator Trophy was first presented to the Ontario Hockey Association in the 1957-58 season. Winners have gone on to capture the OHL championship 25 times and the Memorial Cup 11 times. The Hamilton Bulldogs were both J. Ross Robertson Cup champions as well as Hamilton Spectator Trophy recipients in 2021-22. Prior to that, the 2017 Erie Otters hoisted the Robertson Cup following their second straight regular season title while the 2009 Windsor Spitfires were the last OHL club to complete the trifecta, emerging as Memorial Cup champions.

The 67’s are in pursuit of their fourth OHL championship after recently coming in as finalists in 2019. They last hoisted the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 2001 and are two-time Memorial Cup champions, capturing CHL supremacy in both 1984 and 1999.

Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy (Top Scorer) & Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy (Top Scoring Right Winger) – Matthew Maggio, Windsor Spitfires
For the second straight year, a Windsor Spitfires player is taking home the Eddie Powers Trophy, receiving the OHL’s Top Scorer Award presented by Kubota Canada. As the OHL’s top-scoring right winger, Maggio also earns the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy.

New York Islanders prospect Matthew Maggio paced the OHL with 111 points including a League-leading 54 goals along with 57 assists in 66 games. Maggio was a plus-41 performer, scoring just four of his 54 goals on the power play to become one of four players in the past decade to score at least 45 even strength goals in a season.

Maggio tied a Spitfires single game franchise record with his five goals on Dec. 15th in a 6-3 win over the Erie Otters, joining Daniel D’Amico, Paul Gagne and Gerry Leroux as the fourth Spitfire to accomplish the feat. He follows last year’s Eddie Powers Trophy recipient, former teammate Wyatt Johnston in becoming the fourth player in modern Spitfires franchise history to claim the honour. Other recipients have included Taylor Hall (2009-10) and Peter Sarno (1997-98) while Earl Reibel (1949-50) and Bert Giesebrecht (1948-49) also have their names etched on the trophy.

A fifth round (142nd overall) pick by the New York Islanders last summer, the overage Maggio wraps-up his OHL regular season career with 99 goals, 118 assists and 217 points over 212 contests spent between Windsor and the Ottawa 67’s, who selected him in the fifth round (86th overall) of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Maggio recorded 17 points (7-10–17) in 25 games last spring as the Spits won a Western Conference title and reached Game 7 of the OHL Championship Series.

The Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy was donated by the Toronto Marlboro Athletic Club in memory of Eddie Powers and was first awarded in 1945-46 to Tod Sloan of St. Michael’s who scored 79 points in 25 games. In addition to Johnston, other recent recipients have included Marco Rossi of the Ottawa 67’s in 2019-20, high-scoring present-day Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson of the Niagara IceDogs in 2018-19, along with former Spitfire Aaron Luchuk, who claimed the honour as a member of the Barrie Colts in 2017-18.

Additionally, Maggio is the first Windsor Spitfires player to ever win the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s top scoring right-winger.

The Jim Mahon Trophy was first presented following the 1971-72 season by the players and management of the Peterborough Petes in memory of their right winger Jim Mahon who was accidentally killed that summer. Recent recipients have included Lucas Edmonds of the Kingston Frontenacs in 2021-22, Arthur Kaliyev of the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2019-20, Justin Brazeau of the North Bay Battalion in 2018-19 and Jordan Kyrou of the Sarnia Sting in 2017-18.

Dave Pinkney Trophy (Lowest Team Goals-Against) – Max Donoso and Collin MacKenzie, Ottawa 67’s
The Ottawa 67’s surrendered a League-low 171 goals over their 68-game schedule during a season that resulted in a franchise record 51 wins and 107 points. They were backstopped by the goaltending duo of Max Donoso and Collin MacKenzie, who earn the Dave Pinkney Trophy in 2022-23.

Donoso and MacKenzie helped the 67’s earn their sixth Hamilton Spectator Trophy in franchise history as the club allowed just over 2.5 goals-per-game.

Donoso played in 47 of Ottawa’s 68 games, recording the eighth 30+ win season by a goaltender in 67’s franchise history as he boasted a record of 30-10-0-2 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .898 save percentage with two shutouts. The native of Windsor, Ont. was a fifth round (98th overall) pick by the 67’s in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and owns a career record of 41-19-1-7 with a 2.75 goals-against average, .901 save percentage and three shutouts in 74 regular season games.

MacKenzie continued a tremendous start to his OHL career to open the season, carrying over a 4-0 record from 2021-22 to win his first 10 consecutive decisions, the most by a goaltender in the past 25 years of OHL history. He also set a new OHL record on Oct. 21st in Sault Ste. Marie when he made 15 consecutive shootout saves in a 2-1 victory over the Greyhounds. The 18-year-old from Elora, Ont. posted an impressive 1.88 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and a record of 21-2-3-0 in 30 games. The former eighth round (160th overall) pick by Ottawa in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection is a career 25-2-3-0 over 38 regular season games.

This marks the eighth time the 67’s have led the League with the fewest goals-against. Past 67’s goaltenders with their names engraved on the trophy include Cedrick Andree and Will Cranley (2019-20), Cedrick Andree and Michael DiPietro (2018-19), Craig Hillier and Seamus Kotyk (1997-98), Tim Keyes and Craig Hillier (1996-97), Darren Pang and Greg Coram (1983-84), Jim Ralph (1980-81) and Michel “Bunny” Larocque (1971-72).

F.W. “Dinty” Moore Trophy (Besst Rookie Goals-Against Average): Zach Bowen, London Knights
Zach Bowen of the London Knights is the recipient of the F.W. “Dinty” Moore Trophy, leading all qualified rookie netminders with a 3.10 goals-against average.

An 18-year-old from Kanata, Ont., Bowen played to a mark of 17-4-0-0, with an .899 save percentage and one shutout over 26 contests. He went on a run of 15 consecutive wins between Nov. 12th and Feb. 18th, the second-longest such streak in the past 25 years of OHL history. Bowen was London’s fourth round (77th overall) pick in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection last season after going undrafted in 2021.

Bowen follows current goaltending partner Brett Brochu, who won the Dinty Moore Trophy in 2019-20. Other Knights recipients have included Jordan Kooy in 2017-18, Ryan MacDonald in 2003-04, Sean Basilio in 1989-90 and Barry Heard in 1976-77.

The trophy is named after F.W. “Dinty” Moore of Port Colborne, Ont., who served as OHA President from 1942-45. In order to qualify for this rookie award, a goaltender must play a minimum of 900 minutes. Last year’s winner was Domenic DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion.

Greyhounds’ Bryce McConnell-Barker Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

New York Rangers prospect Bryce McConnell-Barker of the Soo Greyhounds is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, four assists and eight points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

McConnell-Barker started his week off strong on Wednesday, recording two goals including the game-winner as the Greyhounds defeated the visiting Kitchener Rangers 5-4. He found the scoresheet again on Friday in Flint, recording a goal an an assist as the Greyhounds fell short to the Firebirds 6-5 in overtime. McConnell-Barker helped the Greyhounds bounce back at home on Sunday as the forward earned first star honours, finishing with a goal and three helpers in a 6-3 victory over the London Knights to close out the weekend.

An 18-year-old native of London, Ont., McConnell-Barker leads the Greyhounds with 47 points (21-26–47) in 37 games this season. He was a third round (97th overall) pick of the New York Rangers this past summer following 23 goals, 26 assists and 49 points in 68 games as a rookie with the Greyhounds last season. The 6-foot-2, 196lb. forward was originally Sault Ste. Marie’s first round (4th overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Also given consideration for the award this week were Anaheim Ducks prospect Sasha Pastujov of the Sarnia Sting, who recorded two goals and four assists in a pair of victories. Overage forward James Hardie of the Mississauga Steelheads was also a standout, recording two goals and four helpers (2-4-6) over three games, pulling into a tie for the most goals (114) and points (207) in Mississauga Steelheads franchise history.

67’s’ Max Donoso Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Max Donoso of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Defending the crease in back-to-back victories, Donoso turned aside 26 of the 27 shots that came his way on Friday as Ottawa defeated the Niagara IceDogs 4-1. The 6-foot-1, 182lb. netminder returned to the crease on Sunday, stopping 13 of the 14 shots he faced as the 67’s closed out the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack.

A 19-year-old from Windsor, Ont., Donoso owns a 19-5-0-1 record with a 2.62 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in 27 games this year. Donoso ranks third among OHL goaltenders in goals-against average this season as the 67’s remain atop the OHL standings. The former fifth round (98th overall) pick by the 67’s in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection currently holds a 30-14-1-6 record in 54 regular season OHL appearances.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as Guelph Storm netminder Brayden Gillespie went 2-0-0-1 with a 2.65 goals-against average and .910 save percentage, helping the Storm collect five of a possible six points. Sarnia Sting goaltender Nicholas Surzycia went 2-0 on the weekend, recording a 1.50 goals-against average and .942 save percentage.

Storm’s Matthew Poitras Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Boston Bruins prospect Matthew Poitras of the Guelph Storm is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week after recording two goals, six assists and eight points in a pair of Storm victories.

Poitras helped the Storm come from behind to defeat the Niagara IceDogs 6-4 on Thursday night, recording four primary assists, with three of them coming in the third period. After earning third star recognition on Friday, Poitras was named the game’s first star on Saturday, scoring twice while adding two assists as Guelph defeated the visiting Kitchener Rangers 5-3. Poitras opened the scoring in Saturday’s win and scored the eventual game winning goal early in the second period.

An 18-year-old from Brooklin, Ont., Poitras leads the Storm with 23 points (6-17–23) in 16 games this season while also owning a club-high plus-4 rating. He’s won 54.3 percent of his faceoffs on the campaign and is in the midst of a six-game point streak that dates back to Oct. 30th. The 5-foot-11, 170Ib. centreman was selected by the Boston Bruins in the second round (54th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft. Poitras was Guelph’s first round (12th overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Whitby Wildcats U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Seattle Kraken prospect Ty Nelson put up six points (2-4–6) in three games on the North Bay Battalion blue line. Poitras’ new Guelph Storm teammate Max Namestnikov got off to a great start in his new surroundings, recording six points (3-3–6) last week.

Petes’ Michael Simpson Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout.

October’s OHL Goaltender of the Month, Simpson went a perfect 26-for-26 on Thursday night against the Oshawa Generals as the Petes defeated their long-time rival by a score of 4-0. Simpson returned to the crease on Saturday in Mississauga, making 31 saves for second star honours as Peterborough defeated the host Steelheads 7-3.

A 19-year-old from London, Ont., Simpson leads the OHL with a 2.28 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and two shutouts through 16 games, posting a record of 9-4-1-2. The second-year netminder played to a 20-18-3-1 mark in 2021-22, registering a 3.56 goals-against average and .891 save percentage. Simpson was a 10th round (193rd overall) pick of the Petes in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Also in the running for the award this week, Barrie Colts netminder Ben West turned aside 82 shots, going 1-1 with a 2.53 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Ottawa’s Max Donoso helped the 67’s continue their current winning streak, going 2-0 with a 3.00 goals-against average and .900 save percentage.

Battalion’s Matvey Petrov Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov of the North Bay Battalion is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, two assists and six points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Petrov helped the Battalion take three wins last week, extending their current winning streak to five games. He recorded a goal and two assists as the Battalion defeated the Niagara IceDogs in a high-scoring 9-3 victory on Thursday. Petrov’s scoring ways continued on Friday as he netted a pair of markers in a 5-1 road win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. He found the back of the net, extending his current point streak to 11 games on Saturday as the Battalion took a 5-3 win in Erie.

A 19-year-old forward, Petrov was selected in the sixth round (180th overall) by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2021 NHL Draft who signed him to an entry-level NHL contract on April 11, 2022. He leads the Troops with 20 points (8-12–20) in 14 games this season. The former first overall pick by the Battalion in the 2020 CHL Import Draft recorded 40 goals, 50 assists and 90 points last season before leading North Bay to the Eastern Conference Championship Series.

Also given consideration for the award this week were a pair of Sarnia Sting teammates in Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ty Voit who recorded seven assists (0-7-7), and Nolan Burke who registered six goals (6-0-6) over three games played.

Spirit’s Tristan Lennox Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox of the Saginaw Spirit is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with a shutout victory, a goals-against average of 0.51 and a save percentage of .979.

Defending the crease in back-to-back games, Lennox turned aside 20 of the 21 shots he faced on Friday, surrendering a late goal to Kitchener’s Roman Schmidt as the Spirit fell 1-0 on the road. Lennox was back between the pipes on Sunday night, backstopping Saginaw to a 5-0 road win over the Oshawa Generals where he made 26 saves to earn his second career OHL shutout.

A 20-year-old native of Cambridge, Ont., Lennox was selected in the third round (93rd overall) by the New York Islanders in the 2021 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 200 lb. netminder is 7-3 on the season with a 3.21 goals-against average and .879 save percentage. He owns a career mark of 41-33-3-2 with a 3.31 goals-against average and .885 save percentage over 87 career regular season games. Lennox was Saginaw’s second round (26th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Mississauga Reps U16 program.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as Ottawa 67’s netminder Max Donoso went 2-0 on the weekend, recording a 1.50 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in wins over Barrie and Peterborough. Soo Greyhounds goaltender Samuel Ivanov went 1-0-0-1, posting a 1.44 goals-against average and .945 save percentage to help his team collect three of a possible four points.

Greyhounds’ Robert Calisti Named OHL Player of the Week

Overage defenceman Robert Calisti of the Soo Greyhounds is the OHL Player of the Week with seven assists over three games.

Calisti put together three straight multi-point performances as the Greyhounds took two of three to close out the season in fourth place in the Western Conference. Calisti was good for a season-high three assists on Wednesday at home to Sudbury, earning second star honours as the Greyhounds defeated the Wolves 6-4. He posted back-to-back two-assist efforts in Flint on Friday and Saturday, helping the Hounds win 6-3 in the opener before they fell 6-4 in the back half. Calisti joins Brandt Clarke and Jack Thompson as just the third defenceman to earn Player of the Week honours this season.

A 21-year-old native of Etobicoke, Ont., Calisti finished his overage season with a league-leading 21 goals from the blue line, finishing tied for sixth among OHL defenders with 57 points (21-36–57). His 198 shots on goal were the league’s fourth-most at his position as he wraps up his OHL regular season career with 41 goals, 73 assists and 114 points over 195 career contests. Calisti signed a two-year minor league contract with the Florida Panthers organization in March. He was Sault Ste. Marie’s third round (44th overall) pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds scored six times in three games, reaching the 50-goal milestone with a four-goal effort in Flint’s final regular season game on Saturday. Hamilton Bulldogs forward Logan Morrison was also in the running, recording seven points (2-5–7) in three victories to close out the season with 100 points.

67’s’ Max Donoso Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Max Donoso of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, playing to a 1-0-0-1 record with a 0.48 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and one shutout.

Donoso stopped 62 of the 63 shots he faced as the 67’s completed their regular season in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. He recorded his first career OHL shutout on Friday as the 67’s blanked the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 5-0. Donoso made 26 saves and earned first star of the game recognition. He returned to the crease on Saturday in Kingston, stopping 36 of 37 to help Ottawa earn a point before falling by a score of 2-1 in a shootout while being named the game’s third star. This marks the second time Donoso has earned OHL Goaltender of the Week honours this season.

An 18-year-old from Windsor, Ont., Donoso played to a mark of 11-9-1-5 with a 2.82 goals-against average and .906 save percentage over 27 games in his first OHL season. A former fifth round (98th overall) pick by Ottawa in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Donoso is a graduate of the Windsor Jr. Spitfires U16 program and spent the 2019-20 season at Salisbury Prep School in Connecticut. He began the 2021-22 campaign with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the CCHL, going 11-2-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and .935 save percentage over 15 games.

Also considered for the award this week, Matteo Drobac of the Hamilton Bulldogs went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .958 save percentage in wins over Niagara and Erie. Guelph’s Owen Bennett also played to a 2-0 mark in wins over Erie and Windsor, recording a 1.50 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.

OHL Writers’ Draft Eligible Player of the Month for January

Just a reminder that for this season, we are breaking down our Draft Eligible Player of the Month down by position due to the number of draft eligible players this season. In previous seasons we named one player only. So, lets get right to it!

Forward

Up front we’re going with Matthew Maggio of the Windsor Spitfires. Maggio played in 8 games scoring 8 goals and adding 7 assists. He had 3 multi-goal games and 5 multi-point games while being held off the score sheet just once. He was named the game’s first star on 4 occasions and second star twice through the month.

Maggio is a late 2002 birthdate which means he is re-entering the draft in 2022. He has 18 goals and 22 assists in 34 games on the season.

Also considered was Nolan Burke of the Sarnia Sting. Burke also appeared in 8 games in January and also scored 8 goals and added 6 helpers. Like Maggio, Burke is a late 2002 birthdate and is re-entering the draft. He has 22 goals and 19 assists in 33 games on the season.

Defenceman

It’s never an easy choice when it comes to OHL blueliners, but for January we give the nod to Christian Kyrou of the Erie Otters. Kyrou is overshadowed a tad in draft circles by teammate Spencer Sova, but Kyrou is having quite the season with 9 goals and 20 helpers in 34 games.

In the month of January, Kyrou posted 4 goals and 5 assists in 8 games and finished a plus-5. He was kept off the scoresheet twice and had 3 multi-point games.

Also considered was Chas Sharpe of the Mississauga Steelheads. Sharpe posted 9 points in 11 games seemingly coming out of nowhere. He had just 2 assists in the previous 24 games heading into January. Kirill Kudryavtsev of the Soo Greyhounds also got some consideration after putting up a goal and 7 helpers in 11 games.

Goaltender

For the second time this season, Patrick Leaver of the Oshawa Generals is our choice. Leaver appeared in 7 games during the month – one of them in relief – and posted a sparkling .930 save-percentage. Unfortunately for Leaver he posted just a 3-3-0 record in his starts. One of those losses came on January 23, he stopped 48 of 49 shots in a 2-0 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs. That earned him first star honors.

Leaver had faced the Frontenacs 5 days earlier and in the contest the Fronts fired 41 shots at his net. He stopped 39 of those and leading his team to a 4-2 victory. His effort that night earned him second star honors.

On January 15 Leaver went up against Oshawa’s rivals the Peterborough Petes. He stopped 36 of 37, many of them of a difficult variety and backstopped his club to a 4-1 victory. He was named the games second star.

Also considered was Max Donoso of the Ottawa 67’s. Donoso appeared in 4 games and posted a save percentage of .939 and a 3-0-0-1 record. In his first appearance in January, he came in in relief and stopped all 12 shots he faced allowing the 67’s to come back and earn a victory in the shootout.

Colts’ Brandt Clarke Named OHL Player of the Week

Los Angeles Kings prospect Brandt Clarke of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, seven assists and nine points in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-8.

Clarke had at least two points in all four games, helping the Colts score lopsided wins over Sudbury and Owen Sound before road losses in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. The right-shot defender kicked off the week with a goal and an assist in Barrie’s 9-1 win in Sudbury on Tuesday, garnering second star recognition. Clarke was back on the scoresheet Thursday night, picking up a pair of assists as the Colts defeated the Owen Sound Attack 8-0. He helped Barrie earn a point in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, scoring the game-tying marker with less than a second remaining to force overtime as the Colts would go on to fall 4-3 in the extra frame. Clarke finished things off with three assists on Sunday as Barrie’s comeback effort came up short in Sudbury, resulting in a 6-5 loss. Clarke is the second defenceman to earn the honour this season and becomes the first Colts player to be named OHL Player of the Week since Lucas Chiodo in September 2018.

Hailing from Nepean, Ont., the 18-year-old Clarke leads OHL defenders with 42 points including eight goals, 34 assists and a plus-19 rating across 32 games. The 6-foot-2 rearguard leads the Colts in scoring this season and is riding a current five-game point streak. Clarke was a first round (8th overall) pick of the Los Angeles Kings last summer, and signed an entry-level NHL contract with the club in August. Clarke won a gold medal as a member of Canada’s National Under-18 Team in May 2021 and is a former 2019 OHL Cup champion as a member of the Don Mills Flyers. The Colts selected Clarke fourth overall in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Colts teammate Nathan Allensen recorded eight points (2-6–8) across four games while OHL scoring leader Rory Kerins of the Soo Greyhounds put up seven points (3-4–7) in three contests as the Hounds won two of three.

67’s’ Max Donoso Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Max Donoso of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 1-0-0-1 with a 1.44 goals-against average and .947 save percentage.

Donoso stopped 54 of 57 shots directed his way, helping the 67’s collect three points on the road. He turned aside 33 shots on Friday in Sudbury, earning first star honours in his third straight win as Ottawa defeated the Wolves 3-1. Donoso returned to the crease Sunday afternoon in North Bay, making 21 saves as the Barber Poles fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Battalion.

An 18-year-old from Windsor, Ont., Donoso is 3-3-0-0 in his first OHL season with a 2.13 goals-against average and .923 save percentage across eight games. He’s split the season between the 67’s and Hawkesbury Hawks, going 11-2-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and .935 save percentage in the CCHL. The 6-foot-1, 173Ib. netminder was Ottawa’s fifth round (98th overall) selection in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, and spent the 2019-20 season between the Rochester Coalition U18 program and Salisbury Prep School located in Salisbury, Conn.

Also considered for the award this week, Roman Basran of the Mississauga Steelheads went 3-0-0-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. Reigning Goaltender of the Week Mack Guzda of the Barrie Colts was 2-0-1-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.
