RANGERS’ MATTHEW SOP AWARDED LEO LALONDE MEMORIAL TROPHY AS OVERAGE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Kitchener Rangers forward Matthew Sop is the 2023-24 recipient of the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy awarded to the League’s Overage Player of the Year as voted by OHL General Managers.

A 21-year-old from Kitchener, Sop racked up 43 goals and 90 points over 67 games in his third season. He finished tied with teammate Carson Rehkopf for the league-lead in game-winning goals with 10, and was knotted with Sudbury’s Quentin Musty for the most overtime goals with five. He also led Kitchener in shorthanded goals with three.

“This recognition from the league means a lot to me,” said Sop of the honour. “I am really honoured to receive it, but I definitely could not have gotten it without all of my teammates and coaches around me!”

Sop’s production climbed over each of his three OHL seasons, starting with 22 points (10-12—22) as a rookie in 2021-22, climbing to 56 points (23-33—56) in 2022-23 to 90 (43-47—90) this past season, giving the former seventh-round pick in 2019 a total of 169 points (76-93—169) over 203 regular season games with his hometown Rangers.

“We are so excited and proud of Matthew on this individual accomplishment,” said Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. “It has been tremendous to see the growth in his game throughout his career with the Rangers and this is well-earned recognition for a great season.

“Also, as a seventh-round pick, it is fitting this award will be handed out on OHL Draft weekend,” McKenzie added. “Matthew is another example that development looks different for everyone and players that aren’t top picks can still make a big impact.”

Sop becomes the fourth player in Kitchener Rangers history to earn Overage Player of the Year recognition, following Jason Akeson (2010-11), Andre Benoit (2004-05) and Joey St. Aubin (1990-91).

Owen Sound Attack forward Deni Goure finished as runner-up in award voting.

The Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the Top Overage Player of the Year as selected by OHL General Managers. Teams were asked to submit a nominee for the award and were not permitted to vote for players from their own hockey club.

First presented in 1984, the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy was donated by the trainers of the Ontario Hockey League, in memory of the late Leo Lalonde, former Chief Scout of OHL Central Scouting. Leo Lalonde was also former the Chief Scout for the Belleville Bulls as well as a scout for the Peterborough Petes.

Sop joins a list of other accomplished recent recipients in last year’s winner Matthew Maggio of the Windsor Spitfires, North Bay Battalion graduate Brandon Coe (2021-22) and former Ottawa 67’s forward Austen Keating (2019-20).

DICKINSON AND GILLESPIE NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Knights’ Sam Dickinson Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

2024 NHL Draft prospect Sam Dickinson of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, five assists and eight points over three games as the Knights went a perfect 3-0.

A 6-foot-3, 195Ib. left-shot defender, Dickinson put together the first of three straight multi-point outings on Thursday in Sarnia, recording a pair of assists in London’s 6-2 win over the Sting. Dickinson set a new career-high on Friday, posting two goals and two assists for four points as the Knights defeated the Sting 5-1. Dickinson was the game’s first star as he finished with six shots on goal and a plus/minus rating of plus-3. Dickinson closed out the week with a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 5-3 triumph over the Flint Firebirds, extending London’s winning streak to six games as the Knights enter 2024 sitting second in the Midwest Division. Dickinson was second among all OHL skaters with 18 shots on goal last week.

A 17-year-old from Toronto, Ont., Dickinson sits fourth among OHL blueliners with 34 points (11-23–34) over 35 games this season. His 118 shots on goal are the third-highest total among OHL rearguards. The former fourth overall pick of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection was voted to the OHL’s first all-rookie team last season after putting up 23 points (9-14–23) in 62 games. He was a big part of London’s success in the playoffs, helping them win a Western Conference title with eight points (4-4–8) in 21 playoff outings. Dickinson is currently an A-rated skater by NHL Central Scouting for the 2024 NHL Draft. He’s been selected to compete in the 2024 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game set to take place in Moncton, NB on Wednesday, January 24th.

Also considered for the award this week, Owen Sound Attack overage forward Deni Goure set a new single game franchise record in Thursday’s 10-2 win over the Niagara IceDogs, with his eight points (3-5–8) in that game contributing to a total of 10 over three contests this week as the Attack went 1-2-0-0. Draft eligible Kingston Frontenacs forward Jacob Battaglia was also productive, recording seven points (2-5–7) in just two games last week.

Storm’s Brayden Gillespie Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Guelph Storm netminder Brayden Gillespie has been named the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season after he went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .947 save percentage in a pair of starts last week.

Gillespie came out of the holiday break with a first star effort on Thursday against Erie, stopping 28-of-29 in a 3-1 Storm win over the Otters. Gillespie backstopped Guelph to a fifth-straight win on Saturday, making 26 saves as the Storm defeated the Flint Firebirds 3-2 at the Dort Financial Center.

An 18-year-old from Oakville, Ont., Gillespie currently leads the OHL with a 2.69 goals-against average to go with a record of 17-9-1-1 with a .909 save percentage and one shutout over 29 games. The 5-foot-11, 173Ib. Gillespie was Guelph’s 11th round (207th overall) pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. He split the 2022-23 season between the Storm, where he went 13-6-2-1 with a 3.40 goals-against average and .879 save percentage, and the GOJHL’s Ayr Centennials, where he played in 23 contests. Gillespie previously won the award this season during the week of Oct. 16-22.

Also considered for the award this week, London Knights goaltender Michael Simpson played to a 3-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and .910 save percentage as he earned wins over Sarnia and Flint. Also receiving consideration was Liam Sztuska of the Peterborough Petes, who registered a 52-save shutout victory on Sunday. He’d finish the week with a 2.86 goals-against average, .930 save percentage and record of 1-2-0-0.

Greyhounds’ Jordan D’Intino Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Soo Greyhounds overage forward Jordan D’Intino is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, leading the League with seven points, including four goals and three assists over three contests.

D’Intino helped the Greyhounds climb to the top of the Western Conference standings, recording his first career OHL hat trick in the process. After being held off the scoresheet in Wednesday’s 3-2 shootout win over the London Knights, D’Intino put together a goal and an assist in a 7-4 road loss to the Sarnia Sting on Friday. He had a career night in Flint on Saturday, scoring three times while adding a pair of assists for first star recognition as the Hounds improved to 4-1 to start the season.

A 20-year-old from Delaware, Ont., D’Intino sits tied for second in OHL scoring with eight points (5-3–8) through five games. The 6-foot-1, 190Ib. left-winger is in his third season with the Greyhounds, producing 36 goals, 28 assists and 64 points through 128 career regular season games. The Greyhounds selected D’Intino in the fourth round (80th overall) of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Also considered for the award this week, Sarnia Sting forward Marko Sikic also produced his first career hat trick, finishing with six points (4-2–6) in three games. Owen Sound Attack forward Deni Goure was also productive, putting up five points (3-2–5) in a pair of outings.

Steelheads’ Ryerson Leenders Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Draft eligible Mississauga Steelheads goaltender Ryerson Leenders is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for a second straight week. He played to a 2-0 record with a 0.50 goals-against average, .981 save percentage and one shutout as the Steelheads climbed to the top of the Eastern Conference standings last week.

After earning top honours last week, Leenders returned to the crease on Thursday in Niagara, stopping all 29 shots he faced for his second shutout of the young season as the Steelheads beat the IceDogs 2-0. He got the start on Sunday at home against Brantford, turning aside 24-of-25 shots in a 6-1 win over the Bulldogs.

A 17-year-old from Nanticoke, Ont., Leenders leads the league through two weeks of action, going 4-0 with a 1.00 goals-against-average and .967 save percentage. The 6-foot-1, 176Ib. sophomore played to a mark of 12-15-3-0 with a 3.48 goals-against average and .879 save percentage over 35 games as a rookie in Mississauga last year. Leenders was the first goaltender selected in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, being taken by the Steelheads in the second round (32nd overall) out of the Toronto Nationals U16 program. He won a gold medal with Canada’s men’s national under-18 team this past summer at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Czechia and Slovakia.

Also considered for the award this week, Brayden Gillespie of the Guelph Storm went 1-1 with a shutout and .951 save percentage over two outings. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jakub Vondras of the Sudbury Wolves earned his first OHL shutout, going 1-1 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

Knights’ Brody Crane Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Brody Crane of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, three assists and seven points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-3.

Helping the Knights to a perfect 3-0 showing, Crane opened up the weekend with a pair of goals on Friday as London defeated visiting Barrie in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win. He registered a career-high four points on Saturday, scoring twice while adding two assists as the Knights defeated the Windsor Spitfires 6-1. The 5-foot-11, 185lb. forward contributed another assist on Sunday as the Knights closed out the weekend with a 4-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds.

An 18-year-old native of Union, Ont., Crane has produced six goals, eight assists and 14 points in 16 games this season. The former fourth round (62nd overall) pick by the Knights in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection has registered 14 goals, 15 assists and 29 points in 72 career regular season games. The son of former Knights, Ottawa 67’s and Windsor Spitfires forward Derrick Crane (1990-93), Brody attended rookie camp with the New Jersey Devils this past fall.

Also given consideration for the award this week were recent award recipient Deni Goure of the Owen Sound Attack, who recorded three goals, five assists and eight points (3-5-8) in four games. Logan Morrison of the Hamilton Bulldogs was also a standout, recording one goal and six helpers (1-6-7) over three outings.

Wolves’ Joe Ranger Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Joe Ranger of the Sudbury Wolves is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two wins, a goals-against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .931.

Defending the crease in back-to-back victories, Ranger turned aside 32 of the 35 shots that came his way as Sudbury opened up the weekend with a 6-3 victory over the Guelph Storm on Friday. The 6-foot, 191lb. netminder returned to the crease on Saturday, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced as the Wolves dominated the Kitchener Rangers in a 6-1 win at home.

A 20-year-old from Carp, Ont., Ranger owns a 6-6-2-0 record with a 3.37 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 14 games this season. The former fourth round (63rd overall) pick by the Mississauga Steelheads in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection currently holds a 28-25-7-0 record in 69 regular season OHL appearances between Sudbury and Mississauga.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award as North Bay Battalion netminder Dom DiVincentiis went 2-0 on the weekend, recording a 2.00 goals-against average and .930 save percentage in wins over Barrie and Guelph. Kitchener Rangers goaltender Marco Costantini went 2-1-0-0, posting a 2.36 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.

Attack’s Deni Goure Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Deni Goure of the Owen Sound Attack is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, four assists and eight points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Helping guide the Attack to a perfect 3-0 showing last week, Goure got things started with a goal and two assists on Thursday as Owen Sound overcame a 5-1 deficit on the road in Barrie to win 6-5 in a shootout. He registered a career-high four points on Saturday, scoring twice while adding two assists as the Attack defeated the visiting Guelph Storm 5-2. Goure contributed another goal on Sunday as the Attack closed out the weekend with a 4-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs.

A 19-year-old native of Grand Pointe, Ont., Goure has produced nine goals, eight assists and 17 points in 13 games this season. The former first round (10th overall) pick by the Bears in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection has registered 44 goals, 61 assists and 105 points in 143 career regular season games as he continues his third season in Owen Sound. Goure attended rookie camp with the Carolina Hurricanes in September.

Also given consideration for the award this week were Erie Otters forward Colby Saganiuk who recorded three goals and four assists (3-4-7) over three games, along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6. Barrie Colts overage forward Evan Vierling registered three goal and four helpers (3-4-7) over two games.

Attack’s Carter George Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Rookie netminder Carter George of the Owen Sound Attack is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 0.63 goals-against average and a .976 save percentage.

Trailing 5-1 in Barrie on Thursday, George entered the game for his OHL debut midway through the second period and proceeded to stop all 14 shots he faced before turning aside all eight in the shootout as the Bears came back to win by a score of 6-5. George returned to the crease on Sunday, earning first star honours with 27 saves in a 4-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs at the Bayshore.

A 16-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont., George was selected in the third round (53rd overall) by the Attack in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection from the Thunder Bay Kings U16 program. He started the season with the St. Marys Lincolns of the GOJHL, going 2-1-1 with a 2.88 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in five games.

A pair of other candidates were given consideration for the award this week including San Jose Sharks prospect and Sarnia Sting netminder Ben Gaudreau who went 2-0-0-0 last week, posting a 1.50 goals-against average and .940 save percentage as Sarnia defeated Sudbury and Hamilton. Peterborough Petes goaltender Michael Simpson also went 2-0-0-0, posting a 2.50 goals-against average and .922 save percentage with wins over Sault Ste. Marie and Ottawa.

2018-19 Minor Midget Player of the Year Awards presented at OHL Cup Banquet

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the seven recipients of Minor Hockey Player of the Year Awards for players representing the four Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners including the ALLIANCE, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and both the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s ETA and SCTA regions, along with Hockey Eastern Ontario, and Hockey Northwestern Ontario.

Five of the seven Player of the Year award winners are currently competing at the 2019 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament powered by Under Armour including Shane Wright of the Don Mills Flyers (GTHL), Jack Michaelis of the Thunder Bay Kings (HNO), Chase Stillman of the Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves (NOHA), Brenden Sirizzotti of the Whitby Wildcats (OMHA ETA), and Lawson Sherk of the Halton Hurricanes (OMHA SCTA).  Deni Goure of the Chatham-Kent Cyclones (ALLIANCE) and Mason McTavish of the Pembroke Lumber Kings (HEO) were also recognized among the Minor Midget recipients.

“Congratulations to this year’s award recipients along with their families, coaches, and teammates who have supported these outstanding players not only this season but throughout their minor hockey careers,” said Joe Birch, the OHL’s Senior Director of Player Development and Special Events. “The OHL is proud to help recognize great achievements from across the province that come from hard work and dedication. Best of luck to all players as they prepare for the next step in their hockey and academic careers.”

All seven award recipients are forwards producing impressive offensive totals throughout the regular season.  Goure scored 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 32 games for the Cyclones, while Wright scored 31 goals and 41 assists for 72 points in 33 games for the top ranked Flyers.  Michaelis chipped in 11 goals and six assists for 17 points in 20 games for the Kings, meanwhile McTavish tallied 47 goals and 32 assists for 79 points in 41 games for the Midget Lumber Kings, and Stillman recorded 19 goals and 36 assists for 55 points in 24 games for the Wolves.  In the OMHA, Sirizzotti led all award recipients with 93 points in 36 games including 32 goals and 61 assists for the league champion Wildcats, with Sherk scoring 15 times along with 35 helpers for 50 points in 31 games for the silver medalist Hurricanes.

McTavish, Stillman, and Wright were all members of Team Ontario who earned silver at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.  Wright, who was just recently granted exceptional player status as a 2004-born player for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, was captain of that team.

The awards were presented at the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament Banquet for the ninth straight year recognizing the achievements of the top minor midget aged players from across Ontario.  The awards are presented annually to honour the minor midget players who best exemplify outstanding ability and the qualities of sportsmanship and leadership as voted by the minor hockey coaches, managers and organizations of each respective league.
