Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of playoff games ending Sunday, March 30, 2025.



Otters’ Pano Fimis Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Pano Fimis of the Erie Otters is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering five goals, three assists and eight points in two victories.

Helping the Otters take a 2-0 series lead over the Saginaw Spirit in Round 1 of the OHL Playoffs, Fimis scored twice on Thursday night to earn first-star honours in an 8-5 victory. He found the scoresheet again on Saturday, recording a club playoff record six points including a hat trick and three assists to once again earn first-star honours as Erie secured a 9-5 road win.

The 20-year-old overage centreman recorded 32 goals, 54 assists, and 86 points in 68 games played in Erie this season, also leading the league in the faceoff circle with a 63.2 percent success rate. Originally selected second overall by the Niagara IceDogs in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the Richmond Hill, Ont. native has appeared in 245 regular season contests between the IceDogs and the Otters, tallying 87 goals, 166 assists and 253 points.

Also considered for the award this week, Los Angeles Kings prospect Liam Greentree of the Windsor Spitfires registered seven points (3-4-7) in two wins, while Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights tallied three goals and four assists in a pair of victories.

Bulldogs’ Ryerson Leenders Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Buffalo Sabres prospect Ryerson Leenders of the Brantford Bulldogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the fourth time this season, going 2-0 including a shutout, along with a 1.50 goals-against average, and a .944 save percentage.

Helping Brantford take a 2-0 series lead over North Bay in Round 1 of the OHL Playoffs, Leenders made 51 saves last week. He stopped 30 of 33 shots on Friday as the Bulldogs defeated the Battalion 6-3. On Sunday, he earned first-star honours with his first career OHL playoff shutout, making 21 saves in a 3-0 victory.

An 18-year-old from Nanticoke, Ont., Leenders played to a 31-14-3-0 regular season record, with a 3.11 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 48 games played. The former second-round (32nd overall) pick by Mississauga in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection is now in his third OHL season, owning a career mark of 67-46-10-0 with a 3.21 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and four shutouts over 129 regular season games. Leenders was selected in the seventh round (202nd overall) by Buffalo in the 2024 NHL Draft last summer.

Also considered for the award this week, Joey Costanzo of the Windsor Spitfires went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .927 save percentage, while Charlie Schenkel of the Kingston Frontenacs was also a standout in the crease, going 2-0 along with a 1.68 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.

Spitfires’ Ethan Garden Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Windsor Spitfires forward Ethan Garden is the OHL Rookie of the Week, registering a goal, two assists and three points in two games played.

Helping Windsor take a 2-0 series lead over the Soo Greyhounds in Round 1 of the 2025 OHL Playoffs, Garden recorded an assist in Thursday’s 7-2 home win. The Belleville, MI native found the scoresheet again on Saturday, adding a goal and an assist to earn third-star honours in a 7-1 victory.

Selected by the Spitfires in the ninth round (164th overall) of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the Detroit Little Caesars U15 AAA program, the 5-foot-8, 166lb. forward registered six goals, eight assists, and 14 points in 55 regular season contests.

Also considered for the award this week, Graydon Jones of the Saginaw Spirit recorded three assists in two games played.

URONEN, LALONDE AND REID NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Frontenacs’ Tuomas Uronen Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Vegas Golden Knights prospect Tuomas Uronen of the Kingston Frontenacs is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, registering two goals, four assists and six points in a pair of wins last week.

Uronen started the week strong with a goal and an assist on Friday, earning second-star honours as the Frontenacs defeated the Soo Greyhounds 3-1. He followed up on Sunday with another standout performance, contributing a goal and three assists to secure second-star recognition again in a 6-2 victory over the Erie Otters.

A 19-year-old forward from Kerava, Finland, Uronen has recorded 51 points (22-29–51) in 36 games this season. Originally selected by the Ottawa 67’s in the first round of the 2023 CHL Import Draft, the 6-foot, 194lb. right-winger has skated in 47 regular season games split between the 67’s and Frontenacs, tallying 24 goals, 33 assists and 57 points. The Vegas Golden Knights’ sixth round (192nd overall) pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Uronen recently won a silver medal with Team Finland at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

Also considered for the award this week, Calgary Flames prospect Luke Misa of the Brampton Steelheads recorded five points (3-2–5), including a hat-trick, in two contests. Erie Otters teammates in Sam Alfano and Pano Fimis were also exceptional, each tallying three goals, three assists and six points in three games played.

Greyhounds’ Nolan Lalonde Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Nolan Lalonde of the Soo Greyhounds is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, earning two shutouts along with a 0.00 goals-against average and 1.000 save percentage.

Acquired by the Greyhounds at the OHL trade deadline, Lalonde continued to make a strong first impression with his new team. He stopped all 36 shots he faced on Thursday in a commanding 7-0 shutout win over the Peterborough Petes. He was back in net on Sunday, turning aside 24 shots to secure his second shutout of the weekend and fifth of his OHL career in a 3-0 victory over the Ottawa 67’s.

The 20-year-old overage netminder has appeared in 25 games this season between Sault Ste. Marie and Kingston, posting an 11-8-5-0 record, including three shutouts, a 3.07 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage. The 6-foot-2, 197lb. netminder was selected by the Erie Otters in the third round (49th overall) of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. Over four OHL seasons split between Erie, Saginaw, Kingston, and Sault Ste. Marie, he has played in 156 regular season games, amassing a 67-61-10-6 record, five shutouts, a 3.58 goals-against average, and .875 save percentage. In the 2024 OHL Playoffs, Lalonde made 12 appearances with the Spirit, earning a 5-7-0-0 record, a 2.79 goals-against average, and an .893 save percentage. A Kingston, Ont. native, he hosted and won the 2024 Memorial Cup with the Saginaw Spirit. Lalonde signed a three-year entry-level contract as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets in October 2022.

Greyhounds’ Chase Reid Named OHL Rookie of the Week

Chase Reid is the OHL Rookie of the Week, recording six assists over three games played.

Reid kicked off a weekend road trip with three assists on Thursday, earning second star honours as the Greyhounds blanked the Peterborough Petes 7-0. He added another assist on Friday, though Sault Ste. Marie fell 3-1 to the Kingston Frontenacs. The 6-foot-2, 185lb. blueliner wrapped up the week with two assists on Sunday, contributing to the Greyhounds’ second shutout of the week in a 3-0 victory over the Ottawa 67’s.

A 17-year-old from Chesterfield, MI., Reid joined the Greyhounds in mid-December after starting the 2024-25 season with the Bismarck Bobcats (NAHL) where he recorded six goals and six assists in 18 games played. In his first 15 games with the Greyhounds, Reid has tallied one goal and 18 assists for 19 points. He was selected by Sault Ste. Marie in the seventh round (125th overall) of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection from the Detroit Victory Honda 15U AAA program. A late 2007-born blueliner, Reid isn’t NHL Draft eligible until 2026.

67’s’ Samuel Mayer Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Overage defenceman Samuel Mayer of the Ottawa 67’s is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals and three assists in four playoff contests along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.

Helping Ottawa skate to a 4-2 series win over the Brantford Bulldogs, Mayer registered a career-high four-point night scoring a hat-trick along with an assist in a 6-5 overtime win to earn first star honours on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 202lb. blueliner added a pair of helpers in a 6-1 victory on Sunday, punching Ottawa’s ticket to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

A soon-to-be 21-year-old defenceman from L’Orignal, Ont., Mayer registered 21 goals, 32 assists and 53 points in 69 regular season games played between the 67’s and the Peterborough Petes. Mayer has tallied 138 points (41-97-138) over 205 games in three seasons. Mayer was a key member in Peterborough’s playoff success last season, tallying seven points (2-5-7) in 23 playoff contests to be crowned a 2023 OHL Champion. Mayer was originally selected by Peterborough in the first round (15th overall) of the 2020 U18 OHL Priority Selection.

Also considered for the award this week, Seattle Kraken prospect David Goyette of the Sudbury Wolves helped lead his team to a 4-1 series win over the Mississauga Steelheads, recording three goals and four assists in three games played. Pano Fimis of the Erie Otters also found success, tallying a pair of goals and three helpers in three contests as the Otters currently trail 3-2 in their first round series against the Kitchener Rangers.

Generals’ Jacob Oster Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the fourth time this season, playing to a 3-1 record including a shutout, along with a 1.18 goals-against average, and .954 save percentage.

Clinching a 4-2 series win over the Barrie Colts, Oster made a total of 104 saves last week to backstop the Generals to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Oster stopped 15 of the 16 shots that came his way on Tuesday in a 5-1 road win. He returned to the crease on Thursday, making 34 saves in a 4-3 overtime win. Oster turned away 23 of the 24 shots he faced to earn third star honours on Friday as the Generals came up short in a 3-0 loss. The 6-foot-3, 190lb. netminder closed out the series with a 32-save shutout performance to earn first star honours on Sunday, helping the Generals move on to the next round of the OHL Playoffs with a 3-0 win over the Colts.

A 20-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Oster played to a regular season mark of 35-16-7-1, posting a 2.82 goals-against average, and .905 save percentage. Ranked first among all netminders with a 1.94 goals-against average in postseason action, Oster currently holds a 4-2-0-0 record. Selected in the fifth-round (92nd overall) by the Guelph Storm in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, the veteran goaltender has appeared in 143 career regular season contests, recording a 3.29 goals-against average and .891 save percentage over three seasons, going 68-47-12-4 in the process. Oster attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings last September.

Also considered for the award this week, Sam Hillebrandt of the Barrie Colts went 1-1-0-1 including a shutout with a 1.84 goals-against average and .957 save percentage. Collin MacKenzie backstopped the Ottawa 67’s to a 4-2 series victory over the Brantford Bulldogs, playing to a 3-1-0-0 record along with a 2.65 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.

FIMIS AND VANDENBERG NAMED OHL TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced Top Performers of the Week for the week of regular season games ending Sunday, December 3, 2023.



Otters’ Pano Fimis Named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week

Pano Fimis of the Erie Otters is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, three assists, and seven points over three contests.

Fimis started the week with a goal on Wednesday as the Otters earned a point in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Kitchener Rangers. He found the scoresheet again on Saturday, recording a pair of goals along with an assist as the Otters fell to the Owen Sound Attack 7-4. Bouncing back on Sunday, the 5-foot-11, 183lb. centreman closed out the weekend with a penalty shot goal and two helpers as the Otters defeated the Attack 8-5 at the Bayshore. Currently leading the OHL with a 64.5% success rate in the faceoff circle, Fimis was 52.8% at the dot last week.

A 19-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., Fimis has recorded 10 goals, 19 assists, and 29 points over 26 games played so far this season. Originally selected second overall by the Niagara IceDogs in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, Fimis has registered 120 points (40-80–120) over 135 regular season games between the IceDogs and Otters. Fimis attended rookie camp with the Pittsburgh Penguins this past September.

Also considered for the award this week, Seattle Kraken prospect David Goyette of the Sudbury Wolves scored three times and added five assists to help Sudbury earn three of a possible six points. Draft-eligible blueliner Zayne Parekh of the Saginaw Spirit was also productive, contributing a total of two goals and six helpers to a two-win weekend.

IceDogs’ Marcus Vandenberg Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

Marcus Vandenberg of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week following a pair of wins where he posted a 1.96 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Stopping a total of 77 shots last week, Vandenberg stopped 44 of the 47 that came his way against his former club on Friday, earning first star honours as the IceDogs defeated the first place Kitchener Rangers 4-3 in overtime. He returned to the crease at home on Sunday, turning aside 33 of the 34 shots he faced in another first star performance as the IceDogs defeated the Peterborough Petes 2-1.

Vandenberg has appeared in 12 games for the IceDogs this season, playing to a 3-6-2-0 record while logging a 3.95 goals-against-average and .891 save percentage. The 5-foot-11, 172lb. Dorchester, Ont. native was originally selected in the ninth round (177th overall) by the Kitchener Rangers in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Elgin-Middlesex U16 program. Defending the crease in his third OHL season, the 19-year-old has played to a career record of 12-18-4-0, posting a 3.79 goals-against-average and .890 save percentage.

Also considered for the award this week, Edmonton Oilers prospect Nathan Day of the Flint Firebirds went 2-0 with a 1.93 goals-against average, and .932 save percentage in wins over Peterborough and Ottawa.

SIX OHL PLAYERS TO REPRESENT CANADA AT 2022 IIHF WORLD UNDER-18 HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

Toronto, Ont. – Six Ontario Hockey League players have been named to Canada’s roster for the upcoming 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship that will take place from April 23rd to May 1st in Landshut and Kaufbeuren, Germany.

Hockey Canada announced the roster of 25 players on Monday afternoon. Two of the OHL players named to the roster, Sudbury’s Kocha Delic and Niagara’s Pano Fimis, won bronze as part of Team Canada at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics.

The roster also includes David Goyette of the Sudbury Wolves who led the OHL in rookie scoring with 33 goals and 73 points over 66 games. Erie Otters netminder Nolan Lalonde led all OHL rookies in minutes played with 3,066, the fourth-highest total in the OHL. Fimis comes off a strong rookie season that saw him collect 30 assists, a new record by an IceDogs rookie.

“We are excited to unveil the 25 players that will wear the Maple Leaf at the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship and take on the challenge of winning a second-consecutive gold medal,” said director of player personnel Alan Millar. “For many of these players, this is the first time they will represent their country in international competition, and we know they are excited for the opportunity to compete on the world stage.”

Canada will open the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship against the United States on April 23 at 1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT, and will also take host Germany on April 24 and Czechia on April 26.

TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will broadcast 13 games throughout the tournament, including all Team Canada preliminary-round games, four quarterfinals, both semifinals, and the bronze and gold medal games.

Since 2002, Canada has won four gold medals at the IIHF U18 World Championship (2003, 2008, 2013, 2021), in addition to one silver (2005) and three bronze (2012, 2014, 2015).

Pano Fimis was an elite offensive producer at the Under-16 during the 2019-2020 season and the Niagara IceDogs used the second overall pick to select him behind his Toronto Jr Canadiens teammate Ty Nelson (North Bay Battalion).

If you spend any time watching Fimis you will notice his head is on a swivel, He is constantly surveying the ice and knows exactly where everyone is and this allows him to find open ice at both ends of the rink. If the puck finds his stick, he’s one step ahead and usually makes the right decision.

Fimis is a creative player who seems to be able to make something out of nothing. He has Charmin soft hands and can find his way out of traffic, scan the zone and then dish off a tape-to-tape pass. It’s his ability to read and react that makes him a force to contend with and that goes for 5vs5, the powerplay and the penalty kill.

Fimis has all the puck skills you want in a player and the hockey IQ to go along with it. But he doesn’t come without any warts. Fimis lacks the mass to withstand battles along the walls and to get to the net as he can rather easily be knocked off. He’s going to have to put in a lot of work to bulk up and gain some strength.

Additionally, Fimis isn’t exactly a speedster when it comes to his skating. I want some speed in a player that is 5’11”. First steps, separation gear and top speed need some improvement. And best, he is slightly above average when it comes to skating.

Obviously, the lost 2020-2021 season had an effect here. Not only did he not play any games during the pandemic lost season, but lost too was the ability to put some meaningful work in to improve on the areas he needs to work on.

Am I worried? Not really. Almost every player at this level needs to mature physically and Fimis is no different. As long as he is willing to put in the effort, it’s not a problem. If not, he could be another Cole MacKay who added no bulk to his frame from his 2019 draft year until today.

And with professional ice-skating coaches, I’m not to worried about that either. The Pandemic didn’t help with him seeking to improve on his blades. But NHL teams are going to have to be impressed with his hands and ability to think the game and be confident that his skating will improve to select him higher that 77th that NHL Central Scouting has him ranked among North America Skaters.

Fimis lost most of the month of March due to injury, so he’s going to have to have a very strong finish to the season. And he is doing just that with the IceDogs scoring twice and adding four helpers in the four games since his return.

OHL ANNOUNCES ACADEMIC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers, Pano Fimis of the Niagara IceDogs, Luca Marrelli of the Oshawa Generals and Ryder McIntyre of the Sarnia Sting have been named Academic Players of the Month for January.

East Division: Oshawa Generals rookie defender Luca Marrelli is the OHL East Division Academic Player of the Month for January.

Marrelli achieved a 92 percent average in grade 11 university-level English, Math and Accounting plus High Performance at Maxwell Heights Secondary School.

“Luca is a conscientious and personable individual who leads by example demonstrating a strong work ethic,” commented Generals academic advisor Tom Buchanan.

The 16-year-old from Toronto, Ont. has recorded seven points in 34 games (0-7–7) for the Generals. Marrelli was selected in the fifth round (81st overall) by Oshawa in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.

Central Division: Niagara IceDogs forward Pano Fimis is the OHL Central Division Academic Player of the Month for January.

Fimis is currently taking grade 12 university-level English, Advanced Functions and Exercise Science where he is holding an average in the high 80s at Governor Simcoe Secondary School.

“Pano is having an excellent season both on and off the ice,” said IceDogs academic advisor Tim Tope. “He is well respected by both staff and students and is sure to lead the IceDogs for years to come.”

The Richmond Hill, Ont. native has been a big contributor for the IceDogs, recording 23 points in 34 games (6-17–23). The 17-year-old scored his first career goal in his OHL debut against the Barrie Colts on Oct. 7th. Fimis was selected second overall by the IceDogs in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection and was ranked 77th in NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings for the 2022 NHL Draft.

Midwest Division: Kitchener Rangers goaltender Jackson Parsons is the OHL Midwest Division Academic Player of the Month for January.

Parsons is currently taking a full grade 12 university-level course load, which includes straight-A marks in English, Data Management, World Issues, Functions and Healthy Living at Victus Academy. Jackson’s future academic goals are to attend the University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier University to study Sports Management and Business.

“Over the course of the past year and a half, Jackson has handled the transition from a French high school to an English online school with maturity and focus,” said Rangers academic advisor Dave Tennant. “His teachers describe Jackson as an exceptional student, who is diligent and thoughtful in everything he does, including outside of the classroom where he has taken it upon himself to provide mentorship for another student at the school. Jackson is truly a pleasure to talk to off the ice at the rink as well. He listens to all guidance and approaches every situation with a smile.”

Goaltending coach, Jordan DeKort also has good things to say about Parsons.

“It is challenging to be a 17-year-old goalie, it’s his first year in the league, but he has done exceptionally well to adapt. Jackson has been super consistent for us, and he really puts a lot of effort into everything he does, both on and off the ice.”

The Embrun, Ont. native has made 15 appearances for the Rangers, going 6-8-0-0 with a 4.11 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in his first OHL season. Parsons was selected in the third round (53rd overall) by the Rangers in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

West Division: Sarnia Sting forward Ryder McIntyre is the OHL West Division Academic Player of the Month for January, excelling in his studies with a 95 percent average at Northern Collegiate Vocational Institute.

McIntyre is currently taking grade 12 university-level Functions, Biology and Business Leadership.

“Ryder is an exceptional student athlete who is a role model for others,” said Sting academic advisor Mark Scott. “He is an engaged student with an exceptional work ethic who consistently puts forth his best effort both in the classroom and on the ice.”

The 17-year-old from Stouffville, Ont. has seven points in 27 games for the Sting this season (3-4-7), as he recorded a goal and an assist in his career OHL game on Oct. 7th. McIntyre was selected in the third round (51st overall) by the Sting in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

OHL ANNOUNCES ACADEMIC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY

Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Cooper Way of the Oshawa Generals, Pano Fimis of the Niagara IceDogs, Trent Swick of the Kitchener Rangers and Ryan Mast of the Sarnia Sting have been named Academic Players of the Month for January.

Though the puck has yet to drop on the 2020-21 OHL Regular Season, players are striving for excellence in the classroom through their studies. The League continues to work with government and public health agencies to prepare a safe return to play. Academic players of the month are listed in correspondence with their 2019-20 divisions. Details concerning the structure of 2020-21 team alignment will be made available upon release of the OHL Regular Season schedule.

Here’s a look at the OHL’s Academic Players of the Month for January:

East Division: Cooper Way of the Oshawa Generals is being recognized as January’s East Division Academic Player of the Month. He holds a 92% grade in Biology, 98% in Chemistry, 99% in Calculus and an 86% in English for an overall average of 94% in Grade 12 studies at Maxwell Heights Secondary School and St. David Catholic Secondary School.

“Cooper has shown an incredible focus and work ethic,” noted team academic advisor Tom Buchanan. “Cooper has demonstrated his determination as he strives for goals in both academics and hockey.”

Way suited up for one game with the Generals last season. The 17-year-old Waterloo, Ont. native was a fourth round pick of the Generals in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection out of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Elmira Sugar Kings where he put up 25 points (8-17—25) over 46 games during the 2019-20 campaign.

Central Division: Niagara’s Pano Fimis is January’s Central Division Academic Player of the Month. He boasts a 91% in Chemistry, a 92% in Math and a 90% in Financial Accounting in Grade 11 studies at Governor Simcoe Secondary School.

Fimis is described as a leader among his peers with a commitment to his studies that will serve him well in the future. “Pano exemplifies all that we look for in a student-athlete. He has made the best of this difficult situation we find ourselves in and has worked extremely hard, according to his teachers,” wrote IceDogs academic advisor Tim Tope.

Fimis was chosen second overall in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection by the IceDogs following a 104-point season where he captained the Toronto Jr. Canadiens to a GTHL U16 Championship. The 16-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont. was named GTHL Minor Midget Player of the Year and represented Canada at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he captured bronze.

Midwest Division: Trent Swick of the Kitchener Rangers has been named Midwest Division Academic Player of the Month for January. At St. Francis Catholic Secondary School, he achieved an 87% grade in English, an 87% in Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology, and a 94% in Chemistry. He currently holds a 90% mark in Religion as well.

“Trent is to be commended for his consistent academic focus and attention to detail during this very unusual and challenging school year,” wrote academic advisor Dave Tennant. “It takes a great deal of dedication and perseverance to achieve the success he has, and I wish him all the best in continuing his studies.”

Rangers head coach and general manager Mike McKenzie added: “It is great to see Trent has used his time wisely and kept up with his studies over the course of the year. One of the reasons we were excited to draft Trent last year was his work ethic on and off the ice and this award recognizes that off-ice work ethic.”

The 16-year-old Thorold, Ont. native was drafted in the third round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection after a 55-point season with the Southern Tier Admirals.

West Division: Sarnia Sting defenceman Ryan Mast is the West Division’s Academic Player of the Month for January. Mast carries an impressive 92% average across six Grade 12 courses at Bloomfield Hills High School. His report card includes high standing in Calculus (92%), Advanced Composition – English (90%), Physics (82%), Psychology (94%), Business Ethics (95%) and Accounting (97%).

Mast has been praised for his exemplary time management skills and self-motivation towards his studies as well as his ability to balance his off-ice training routine with his daily school expectations.

The 18-year-old defender put up 11 points (1-10—11) over his 58-game rookie season with the Sting. A native of Bloomfield, Mich., Mast was a ninth round pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection out of the Detroit Compuware AAA Program.

This year’s winners include Bryce McConnell-Barker of the London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE), Pano Fimis of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL), Cedrick Guindon of the Rockland Nationals (HEO), Brodie McLeod of the Thunder Bay Kings (HNO), Connor Toms of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds (NOHA), Donovan McCoy of the Quinte Red Devils (OMHA ETA) and Sam Alfano of the Southern Tier Admirals (OMHA SCTA).

“Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s awards and thank you to the families, coaches, and teammates for their tremendous support of these remarkable players over the course of the season and throughout their minor hockey careers,” said Kyle Pereira, the OHL’s Director of Player Recruitment.

“The OHL continues to recognize all the hard work, dedication, and extraordinary accomplishments from across Ontario. We thank all players for another great season and wish them the very best of luck in their hockey and academic careers.”

The recipients consist of four forwards and three defencemen. Looking up front, Alfano capped off the regular season second in SCTA scoring with 36 goals and 63 points in 32 appearances with the Admirals, while Guindon totaled 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points over 41 games with the Nationals. McConnell-Barker tallied 29 goals and 48 points over 33 games with the Jr. Knights for fifth in ALLIANCE scoring and Fimis finished in a tie for first atop the GTHL scoring race with 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 32 games with the league champion Jr. Canadiens.

On defence, McCoy recorded six goals and 29 assists for 35 points in as many games for the OMHA champion Red Devils while McLeod posted seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points in 39 games with the Kings. Toms registered eight goals and 15 assists, good for 23 points over 36 appearances with the Jr. Greyhounds.

The awards are presented annually to honour the minor midget players who best exemplify outstanding ability and the qualities of sportsmanship and leadership as voted by the minor hockey coaches, managers and organizations of each respective league.
