Knights’ Evan Bouchard Named OHL Defenceman of the Year

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Edmonton Oilers prospect Evan Bouchard of the London Knights is the 2018-19 recipient of the Max Kaminsky Trophy awarded annually to the OHL’s Most Outstanding Defenceman of the Year.

Bouchard recorded 53 points in just 45 games scoring 16 goals and 37 assists while carrying a plus-28 rating.  His 1.18 points-per-game mark was the second highest in the OHL this season and he was the only defenceman in the league to average more than four shots on goal per game.

“I am very honoured to be named defenceman of the year,” said Bouchard. “With the quality of players throughout this talented league, this is an achievement that I am incredibly proud of. I would like to credit my teammates, coaching staff, family, and fans for this award. Each member within the London Knights organization was instrumental to my success both on and off the ice and I would like to thank each and every person who helped me along the way.”

A 19-year-old from Oakville, Ont., Bouchard played four full seasons with the Knights after joining the club as a first round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection.  He helped the team capture an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup title as a rookie and went on to play 223 career games for the green and gold.  He amassed 54 goals and 147 assists for 201 points during his London tenure which ranks second all-time among points by a Knights defenceman behind Rick Corriveau who produced 251 in 206 games between 1987-92.  Bouchard was named Knights captain in January, 2018, and later selected tenth overall by the Oilers in the 2018 NHL Draft.  He began the season in Edmonton where he played seven NHL games returning in time to represent Team OHL at the CIBC Canada Russia Series and Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship.  Bouchard is currently with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors where he scored a goal and two assists in his playoff debut on Tuesday.

“We are incredibly proud of Evan for his accomplishment, not just this year, but throughout his entire London Knights career,” said London Knights General Manager, Mark Hunter. “Evan was a tremendous leader and representative of our organization. We watched Evan mature from his time coming in to this league as an enthusiastic 16-year-old rookie, to leaving as a seasoned professional. We’d like to thank Evan for his time in London and wish him the best in his hockey career.”

The Max Kaminsky Trophy is awarded each year to the Most Outstanding Defenceman as selected by OHL General Managers.  All 20 clubs submitted a nominee but were not permitted to vote for their own player.  The first round of voting was conducted by conference only with the top three selections from the West and East advancing to form the final ballot.  Players received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote, and one point for a third place vote.

Bouchard, who was a runner-up to Nicolas Hague of the Mississauga Steelheads one year ago, received 59 points in the final voting process this season.  Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Mac Hollowell of the Soo Greyhounds finished second with 53 voting points, and New York Islanders prospect Bode Wilde of the Saginaw Spirit finished in third place with 46 voting points.

The award is named in recognition of Max Kaminsky, who enjoyed a 10-year professional playing career that included four years in the NHL with Ottawa, Boston, and Montreal.  After he retired from playing, Kaminsky enjoyed a 15-year coaching career that was capped by winning the Memorial Cup with the St. Catharines Teepees in 1960.

Bouchard becomes the first Knight to win the Max Kaminsky Trophy since Danny Syvret in 2004-05 marking the sixth time a member of the organization has received the honour.  That list also includes John Erskine in 1999-2000, Bob Halkidis in 1984-85, co-recipients Brad Marsh and Rob Ramage in 1977-78, and Rick Green in 1975-76.  Past winners of the award also include current NHL talents in Andrej Sekera (Owen Sound 2006), Marc Staal (Sudbury 2007), Drew Doughty (Guelph 2008), Ryan Ellis (Windsor 2009 and 2011), Jacob Muzzin (Sault Ste. Marie 2010), Dougie Hamilton (Niagara 2012), Aaron Ekblad (Barrie 2014), Anthony DeAngelo (Sault Ste. Marie 2015), and Mikhail Sergachev (Windsor 2016).

Bouchard will be formally presented with the Max Kaminsky Trophy at the OHL Awards Ceremony which takes place June 5 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.  He will also be the OHL’s nominee for CHL Defenceman of the Year to be announced on May 25 at the 2019 Memorial Cup presented by Kia which takes place in Halifax.

OHL Announces Top Performers of the Month for March

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in March, 2019, including Kitchener Rangers forward Greg Meireles, London Knights defenceman Evan Bouchard and Saginaw Spirit teammates Cole Perfetti and Ivan Prosvetov.

OHL Player of the Month – Greg Meireles (Kitchener Rangers):

Kitchener Rangers forward Greg Meireles has been named the OHL Player of the Month for March, finishing tied for the league lead with 18 points including five goals and 13 assists over eight games. Meireles recorded points in all eight contests as part of an ongoing 20-game point streak, the OHL’s longest of the 2018-19 season. The 5-foot-11, 188Ib centre recorded at least three points three different times including a three-assist showing on Mar. 1st against London, a goal and three assists in an 8-4 win over the Erie Otters on Mar. 8th followed up by a goal and two helpers on Mar. 10th in Guelph. Meireles potted a pair of power play goals to help the Rangers’ top-ranked power play finish the season with a 29% success rate, the league’s highest since the 2016 Memorial Cup champion London Knights. He also had a hand in helping teammate Jonathan Yantsis reach the 50-goal mark, assisting on four of his goals in the month of March.

A 20-year-old native of Ottawa, Ont., Meireles finished the season as Kitchener’s leading scorer, recording 97 points 36-61–97) over 68 games, 43 of which came on the man advantage. Meireles led the Rangers with 249 shots on goal this season and went 54.1% in the faceoff circle. The former first round (12th overall) pick of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection remains without an NHL contract but attended rookie camp with the St. Louis Blues in 2017.

OHL Defenceman of the Month – Evan Bouchard (London Knights):

For the second straight month a London Knights blueliner has been named the OHL’s Defenceman of the Month. Edmonton Oilers prospect Evan Bouchard takes the torch from teammate Adam Boqvist, recording nine points including five goals and four assists over eight games for the Midwest Division champion Knights. The veteran captain started the month with a season-high four point performance, scoring while adding three assists in an 8-6 road win over the Kitchener Rangers on Mar. 1st. Bouchard also found the back of the net in a 3-2 overtime win over the Flint Firebirds on Mar. 8th before recording back-to-back two-point contests to close out the month, helping the Knights lock down first place in the Western Conference. He scored twice in a 6-3 road loss to the Soo Greyhounds on Mar. 15th before scoring a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit on Mar. 16th. Bouchard recorded at least five shots on goal on five different occasions in the month of March.

A 19-year-old product of Oakville, Ont., Bouchard recorded 53 points (16-37–53) over 45 games in an abbreviated season after returning from the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers where he played seven games and scored his first goal to start the campaign. Bouchard’s 201 career regular season points (54-147–201) sit second in franchise history for defencemen behind Rick Corriveau (1987-92). Originally London’s first round (17th overall) pick in 2015, Bouchard was chosen by the Oilers with the 10th overall pick of the 2018 NHL Draft.

OHL Rookie of the Month – Cole Perfetti (Saginaw Spirit):

Cole Perfetti‘s tremendous rookie season continued this past month as the Saginaw Spirit winger has been named OHL Rookie of the Month for a second consecutive term. Perfetti led all rookies with seven goals along with four assists for 11 points over eight games along with a plus-10 rating. The 5-foot-10 left-winger helped the Spirit secure its first West Division title since 2011, putting up three different multi-point performances beginning with a goal and an assist in an 8-0 win over the Peterborough Petes on Mar. 3rd. He put up a season-high four goals in a 4-1 road win over the London Knights on Mar. 9th, becoming the OHL’s first 16-year-old rookie to do so since Peterborough’s Ryan Spooner in March 2009. Perfetti followed that sterling performance up with a goal and two assists on Mar. 12th as the Spirit took a 6-2 road win over the Sarnia Sting. In total, Perfetti earned Three Star recognition three different times in the month of March.

A 17-year-old native of Whitby, Ont., Perfetti finished the season tied with Owen Tippett for the Spirit scoring lead, recording a league-leading 74 points (37-37–74) among rookies over 63 games. Perfetti’s 37 goals are a new Spirit franchise record for rookies as he finished with the OHL’s sixth-highest shooting percentage of 22.4% while netting seven game winners. Eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft, Perfetti was Saginaw’s first round (5th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Vaughan Kings Minor Midgets.

Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month – Ivan Prosvetov (Saginaw Spirit):

Arizona Coyotes prospect Ivan Prosvetov is the Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month for March, backstopping his team to a West Division title. Prosvetov played to a 4-1-0-1 record with a 1.99 goals-against average, .943 save percentage and one shutout over six games, turning aside 197 shots in the process. He started the month with four consecutive wins as part of a larger eight-game trend,  posting his fourth shutout of the season with a 27-save effort against the Peterborough Petes on Mar. 3rd. He earned second star honours, turning aside 47 of 48 shots in a 4-1 road win over the London Knights on Mar. 9th. Prosvetov turned aside 29 shots on Mar. 12th in Sarnia to backstop the Spirit to a franchise record 46th win and a club mark nine consecutive victories. He stopped 25 shots two nights later on Mar. 14th as the Spirit fell 2-1 in overtime to the Soo Greyhounds but locked down their first West Division title since 2011.

A 20-year-old native of Moscow, Russia, Prosvetov played to an overall mark of 36-11-2-1 with a 2.94 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and four shutouts in his first OHL season. The 6-foot-5, 185Ib netminder owns a league-leading .924 save percentage since Jan. 1st, playing to a 19-5-1-1 mark in that span. Chosen with the 13th overall pick of the 2018 CHL Import Draft, Prosvetov was a fourth round (114th overall) pick of the Arizona Coyotes last summer.

Steelheads’ Nicolas Hague Named OHL Defenceman of the Year

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Vegas Golden Knights prospect Nicolas Hague of the Mississauga Steelheads is the 2017-18 recipient of the Max Kaminsky Trophy awarded annually to the OHL’s Most Outstanding Defenceman of the Year.

Hague becomes the first Steelhead in all-time franchise history to win the award after leading his team in scoring and finishing second among blueliners with 78 points in 67 games including 35 goals and 43 assists.  His 78 points set a Steelheads single season record while his 35 goals represent an all-time franchise mark and the most by an OHL defenceman since Chris Allen of the Kingston Frontenacs lit the lamp 38 times in 1997-98.

“I am extremely excited and proud to win this award,” said Hague. “It is an honour to be recognized among all the other great defencemen we have in our league. I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and management in Mississauga. Without them this wouldn’t have been possible. Most of all I’d like to thank my parents and billet family for their constant support all season long.”

Hague produced 26 multi-point performances in 2017-18 and finished the regular season campaign with a career-high 11-game point-streak.  His 15 power play goals led all defencemen and tied for fifth overall among the league’s top scorers, while his 270 shots on goal was the eighth highest total among all skaters.  He earned OHL Defenceman of the Month honours in both January and March and was unanimously voted Best Offensive Defenceman and atop the Hardest Shot category in the annual Eastern Conference Coaches Poll.  Hague also represented Team OHL in the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series competing in the event for the second straight season.

“The Mississauga Steelheads are very proud of Nic as well as very happy for him being selected as the OHL Defenceman of the Year,” said Steelheads General Manager and Head Coach James Richmond. “Nic has put an enormous amount of work into his development as a player over his three season with the Steelheads so it’s wonderful that he is being rewarded at this time. Nic is not only a great hockey player, he is a wonderful person, a great teammate and we would like to congratulate Nic and his family on such a prestigious award from the OHL.”

A 19-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., Hague was originally chosen by the Steelheads in the second round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.  The alternate captain played three full seasons for the Trout appearing in 198 career games accumulating 148 points including 67 goals and 81 assists.  He was named to the league’s Second All-Rookie Team in 2015-16 season and was also named OHL Scholastic Player of the Year.  Last season he helped the Steelheads hoist the Bobby Orr Trophy as Eastern Conference Champions before being selected by Vegas in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft.  In September he signed his entry-level contract with the Golden Knights.

Hague received 67 points in the final voting process narrowly edging 2018 NHL Draft prospect Evan Bouchard of the London Knights who finished second with 65 voting points.  Sean Durzi of the Owen Sound Attack finished in third place with 29 voting points.

Past winners of the award since 1970 include Craig Hartsburg (Sault Ste. Marie 1977), Larry Murphy (Peterborough 1980), Al MacInnis (Kitchener 1983), Chris Pronger (Peterborough 1993), Brian Campbell (Ottawa 1999), Marc Staal (Sudbury 2007), Drew Doughty (Guelph 2008), Ryan Ellis (Windsor 2009 and 2011), Dougie Hamilton (Niagara 2012), Ryan Sproul (Sault Ste. Marie 2013), Aaron Ekblad (Barrie 2014), Anthony DeAngelo (Sault Ste. Marie 2015), Mikhail Sergachev (Windsor 2016), and Darren Raddysh (Erie 2017).

Hague will be formally presented with the Max Kaminsky Trophy at the OHL Awards Ceremony which takes place June 6 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.  He will also be the OHL’s nominee for CHL Defenceman of the Year to be announced on May 26 at the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup in Regina.

2018 NHL Draft: Where’s the Offence From the OHL?

If it sounds like we’re beating a dead horse, it’s because we are. If Barrie Colts’ superstar Andrei Svechnikov had not missed two months of the season, things would look different. Despite that, it is in the end, a legitimate question to ask.

The 2017 National Hockey League Draft was a very good draft and there were some pretty good offensive players selected from the Ontario Hockey League. But when comparing 2018 to 2017 we must ask, where’s the offense? So, let’s compare the two.

A season ago, Nick Suzuki led all draft eligible players with 96 points. This season, London Knights’ defenceman Evan Bouchard led the way with 87 points. Svechnikov placed third with 72 points behind Akil Thomas of the Niagara Ice Dogs with 81 points. It’s reasonable to assume had he not missed 24 games, Svechnikov would have surpassed Suzuki’s total.

A deeper look tells us that Gabriel Vilardi missed almost as much time as Svechnikov, missing 19 games yet putting up 61 points. But when we compare the top ten producers from the 2017 draft to those that will be selected in June, some may be surprised by the comparisons.

The top ten from 2017 registered a combined 701 points in 635 games. The 2018 class played an equal number of 635 games and contributed a combined 685 points. If we were to project Svechnikov and Vilardi over a full season, then we’d find the difference at just 4 points.

Last season we saw Jonah Gadjovich (46), Suzuki (45), Owen Tippett (44) and Jason Robertson (42) all score 40 or more goals. This season saw only Svechnikov hit the mark with 40. In fact, only Aidan Dudas (31) and Pavel Gogolev (30) hit the 30-goal mark. All the top ten in 2017 scored 25 or more while 7 of the top ten hit the total this season.

Playmaking however seems to be up this year, at least according to the numbers. Last season the top ten provided teammates with 419 helpers, but this season the top ten assisted on 451 goals. Both years were led by a blueliner. Bouchard assisted on 62 goals while Conor Timmins assisted on 54. The difference though, was top heavy with the bottom five virtually equal from year to year.

Points by blueliners was also extremely top heavy. Bouchard (87) and Ryan Merkley (67) combined for 154 points this season. In 2017, Timmins (61) and Nicolas Hague (46) combined for just 107 points. Rasmus Sandin (45) and Markus Phillips (43) were virtually equal, but Sandin played in 15 fewer games. The rest of the class however is more favorable to 2017 with the next five point-getters finishing with 35 points or more, but none of the rest of the 2018 class finished with more than 26 points.

With Bouchard and Merkley out-performing their cousins from a year ago, how much does the 47-point difference skew the numbers among the forwards? Timmins was the only defenseman to place in the top 10 a year ago. If we are concentrating solely on forwards, 2017 wins hands down.

So where is the offense?

OHL Writers’ Draft Eligible Player of the Month for February

With eight goals and nine assists in nine games during the month of February, Barrie Colts forward and top prospect for the 2018 National Hockey League Draft Andrei Svechnikov is our draft eligible player of the month for February.

Despite missing two months of the season with an injury, Svechnikov now has 31 goals and 24 assists in just 36 games on the season. He leads all draft eligible players in goals.

Svechnikov posted points in each of his nine games in February. Six of his none games were multi point games including a hattrick on February 3rd, a 6-2 victory over the Windsor Spitfires at home. He is currently on a 15-game point streak, dating back to January 13th when the North Bay Battalion kept him off the scoreboard.

The Ontario Hockey League named Svechnikov the Rookie of the Month for February. He was named one of the games three stars 5 times in his 9 games in February, receiving first star honours once, second star once and third star on three occasions.

Svechnikov gets our nod on consecutive months following back-to-back consideration for Evan Bouchard of the London Knights in November and December.

Speaking of Bouchard, we gave him some serious consideration this month after scoring 5 goals and 11 assists in 11 games. Consideration was also given to Bouchard’s teammate Liam Foudy, who scored 10 goals and 6 assists in 11 games as well as Allan McShane of the Oshawa Generals with 6 goals and 12 assists in 12 games.

OHL’s Draft Eligible Statistical Leaders: February

With all due respect to London Knights’ star defenceman Evan Bouchard, were it not for a two-month absence of Barrie Colts’ superstar Andrei Svechnikov, things may look a little different then they do statistically as we roll into the final couple weeks of the Ontario Hockey League season.

As you may be aware by now, I am a big fan of Bouchard, but one cannot deny that a healthy Svechnikov would change the leader board. However, for the third time this season, both were named by the OHL as best defenceman and best rookie respectively.

Bouchard led all draft eligible players in points with 76. He is followed by Akil Thomas of the Niagara IceDogs with 68. A trio of players that includes Aidan Dudas of the Owen Sound Attack, Ryan McLeod of the Mississauga Steelheads and Ryan Merkley of the Guelph Storm are tied for third with 58 points. Only Allan McShane of the Oshawa Generals lies between them and Svechnikov.

It goes without saying then that Bouchard also leads defencemen in scoring. Not only the draft eligible defencemen but all defencemen, and barring a meltdown in the final 9 games, he should end the season at the top of the list. Merkley sits in second place while Rasmus Sandin of the Soo Greyhounds places third with 39 points.

Despite playing in 20-plus fewer games, Svechnikov leads the way in goal scoring with 31. He is followed by Dudas with 28. Pavel Gogolev of the Peterborough Petes, who is climbing fast, comes in third with 26 goals.

Here is a list of leaders (first time draft eligible players) in a variety of categories. For official stats, always refer to the OHL website.

OHL Top Performers of the Month for February

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in February 2018, including Barrie Colts forward Aaron Luchuk, London Knights defenceman Evan Bouchard, Barrie Colts rookie Andrei Svechnikov and Kingston Frontenacs goaltender Jeremy Helvig.

OHL Player of the Month – Aaron Luchuk (Barrie Colts):
Ottawa Senators prospect Aaron Luchuk of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Player of the Month for February, leading all players with 26 points including six goals, 20 assists and a plus/minus rating of plus-9. Luchuk recorded points in all 12 games he played, extending his current point streak to 18 games, two shy of the OHL’s season-high. He earned first star honours on three different occasions, starting in a 6-2 win over his former Windsor Spitfires teammates with a goal and three assists on Feb. 3rd. Luchuk was again named first star in an 8-5 road win over the Flint Firebirds on Feb. 14th, recording a goal and two assists. His top performance of the month came in his return to the WFCU Centre on Feb. 15th as he netted the overtime winner and added three assists in a 5-4 Colts win. Eight of Luchuk’s 12 games featured multi-point outputs as he guided the Central Division-leading Colts to a 9-3-0-0 record in the month of February.

A 20-year-old native of Kingston, Ont., Luchuk sits tied for second in league scoring with 99 points including a league-leading 43 goals and 56 assist in 60 games. He scored the game winner in last spring’s Mastercard Memorial Cup final, leading the Windsor Spitfires to a national championship on home ice. Originally Windsor’s fourth round pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, Luchuk’s strong performance this season earned him an entry level NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 26th.

OHL Defenceman of the Month – Evan Bouchard (London Knights):
For the third time this season, draft eligible blueliner Evan Bouchard of the London Knights is the OHL Defenceman of the Month after leading all blueliners with 16 points including five goals and 11 assists. After starting the month with two goals and an assist in an 8-4 loss to the Barrie Colts on Feb. 2nd, Bouchard was named first star on two occasions. He had two assists to claim top honours in a 5-3 win over the Sudbury Wolves on Feb. 10th and had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over the Windsor Spitfires on Feb. 19th. Bouchard also put forth a second three-point performance with two goals and an assist in a 6-2 win over Kitchener on Feb. 16th. Bouchard becomes the first three-time recipient of the OHL Defenceman of the Month award since Niagara’s Dougie Hamilton earned the distinction four times during the 2011-12 season.

An 18-year-old native of Oakville, Ont., Bouchard leads OHL defencemen in points (76) and assists (55) along with 21 goals in 58 games. The right-hand shot rearguard has 137 points (34-103–137) over his 169-game OHL career and was an OHL champion and Mastercard Memorial Cup champion with the Knights during his rookie season in 2016. Bouchard was NHL Central Scouting’s fifth-ranked North American skater in January’s Midterm Rankings. He led Team Cherry to victory at the 2018 Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Guelph, setting a new event record with four assists to earn MVP honours for his team. Bouchard was London’s first round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection from the Oakville Rangers Minor Midgets.

OHL Rookie of the Month – Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie Colts):
For the third time this season, draft eligible forward Andrei Svechnikov of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Rookie of the Month after leading all first-year players with 17 points including eight goals and nine assists. Svechnikov had points in all nine games he played, extending his current point streak to 15 contests. The Russian winger had six different multi-point performances, helping the Colts earn an honourable mention in the CHL Top 10 Rankings to close out the month. He recorded his third hat-trick of the season on Feb. 3rd, helping the Colts defeat the Windsor Spitfires 6-2. He added two more goals a week later as Barrie took a 5-1 road win in Hamilton on Feb. 8th. Svechnikov’s other three-point showing came on Feb. 22nd with a goal and two assists in a 7-4 loss to the Mississauga Steelheads. He’s the first three-time OHL Rookie of the Month award recipient since Mississauga’s Alexander Nylander accomplished the feat during the 2015-16 season.

A 17-year-old native of Barnaul, Russia, Svechnikov leads OHL rookies in both goals (31) and points (55) over just 36 games. He represented Russia at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, recording five assists in as many games against much older competition. The top-ranked North American skater in NHL Central Scouting’s January Midterm Rankings, Svechnikov represented Team Orr at the 2018 Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Guelph. He was the first overall pick of the 2017 CHL Import Draft.

Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month – Jeremy Helvig (Kingston Frontenacs):
Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jeremy Helvig of the Kingston Frontenacs is the Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month for February. The overage veteran led all netminders with a 2.32 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage over nine games, guiding the Frontenacs to a 6-1-2-0 record in the process. Helvig earned first star honours on three different occasions. He earned top honours on Feb. 3rd, guiding the Frontenacs to a 5-3 win over the Niagara IceDogs with a 36-save effort. He made 23 saves to backstop the Fronts to a 2-1 win over the Peterborough Petes on Feb. 16th and followed that effort up by setting a new all-time franchise record with his 76th win on Feb. 18th, turning aside 29 shots in a 6-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers. He finished the month of February by helping Kingston earn a point with 30 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Feb. 23rd.

Kingston’s all-time career wins and shutouts leader, Helvig is currently in his fourth season with the club, playing to a record of 77-46-12-7 with a 2.70 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and 10 shutouts over 149 games. Originally Kingston’s third round pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection from the Markham Majors Minor Midgets, he was Carolina’s fifth round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

OHL’s Draft Eligible Statistical Leaders: January

January 31 brings us within a hair of the three-quarter mark of the Ontario Hockey League season and there are many interesting individual races in a variety of statistical categories. As always, we look at players eligible for the National Hockey League Draft in June in Dallas Texas, for the first time. That is not meant to take away from players re-entering the draft. While I believe some of them will get drafted the second time around, history has shown that they are usually passed over the second time.

It’s hard to imagine, or maybe it is not, where Andrei Svechnikov of the Barrie Colts would be had he not missed almost two months with a wrist injury. Despite missing seven weeks and playing in twenty fewer games, Svechnikov leads all draft eligible players with 23 goals in 27 games. That’s two more then Aidan Dudas of the Owen Sound Attack and three more then Ty Dellandria of the Flint Firebirds, who both have played 47 games.

Thanks in part to Svechnikov’s absence, a pair of highly touted defensemen lead all players in points. Evan Bouchard of the London Knights leads the pack with 60 points in 47 games. He is followed closely by Ryan Merkley of the Guelph Storm who has 57 points in 47 games. Akil Thomas of the Niagara IceDogs comes in third with 56 points in 47 games.

Of course, it goes without saying that Bouchard and Merkley lead all defensemen in the point scoring race. Rasmus Sandin of the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds sits in the next tier by himself with 30 points in 34 games. Yours truly has made it no secret that Sandin would be my choice as the second defenseman taken from the OHL. Giovanni Vallati of the Kitchener Rangers comes in fourth with 20 points in 47 games.

Over the years, there has been a great debate over the value of the plus-minus stat. Whether you agree or not, there is some value to the stat. And Sandin leads the way with a plus-28. That’s a comfortable plus-10 more than teammate Barrett Hayton and Nathan Dunkley of the London Knights.

Serron Noel of the Oshawa Generals led the entire OHL for most of the season in shooting percentage. As of January 31, he drops to second, but still leads all draft eligible players at 25%. Svechnikov comes in second, scoring on 22.3% of his shots, while Cam Hillis of the Guelph Storm comes in third at 21.8%.

Bouchard leads all shooters in shots on goal with 211, which is good enough for second overall in the OHL. He has a comfortable lead over Dellandria (173) and Dudas (172).

While we take great care in compiling stats, always refer to the OHL website for official stats.

OHL Writers Draft Eligible Player of the Month for January

Barrie Colts’ Andrei Svechnikov is our draft eligible player of the month for January.

Svechnikov had a dominant offensive performance for the Colts posting 9 goals and 8 assists in 11 games in January. He was held off the score sheet just once, on January 13 versus the North Bay Battalion. Seven of his remaining ten games were multi-point games. He was named the OHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Heading into the season, Svechnikov was a consensus top-two pick for the 2018 National Hockey League draft. More recently, it’s almost assured that Sweden’s Rasmus Dahlin will be the first player selected, while Filip Zadina (Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL) is challenging Svechnikov to go second.

Svechnikov missed almost two months with a wrist injury. Prior to his injury, he was second in the Ontario Hockey League with 10 goals in 10 games. Despite playing in 20 fewer games, he still leads all draft eligible players in goals with 23 at the end of January (27 games played) and is among the top 10 in points. He sits second next to fellow draft eligible Serron Noel of the Oshawa Generals in shooting percentage at 22.3% on 23 goals on 103 shots.

Also considered was Mississauga Steelheads’ Ryan McLeod who had 7 goals and 8 assists in 10 games. Evan Bouchard of the London Knights was also given consideration after posting 3 goals and 11 assists in 11 OHL games and tying the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game record with 4 assists and being named player of the game. Akil Thomas was also considered after posting 3 goals and 14 assists in 12 games.
